Ironic Indie Lad Posted July 7 Posted July 7 Will be really funny if Holloway batters him and gets the win back. He already ran it back years later with Poirier and it went terribly for McGregor. Couldnt have gone much worse really. Whats next if he loses? Lets give Chad Mendes a call and see if he fancies coming to 185lbs and getting his win back. Quote

That’s the thing, I wouldn’t immediately pick Magny over McGregor myself but we really just don’t know what we’re getting with McGregor here. MMA media and his fans are drunk on the nostalgia of 2013-16 and have convinced themselves he’s gonna put on a masterclass. They’re so confident he’s gonna steamroll Max. It’s mad. But yeah, who knows how he’s gonna look? And it’s not like he’s a proven, tried and tested Welterweight himself. His two wins at 170 are over Nate and a past it Cerrone. Two blown up Lightweights. He’s never beaten an actual legit Welterweight who’s at 170 because they can’t physically make 155. 1 hour ago, Bus Surfer said: I think the contract stuff and the Chandler fight not materialising this time round is a heavily interlinked. Good point. Chandler looking as washed as he has lately probably seems like too winnable a fight for even this McGregor to the UFC. If he was staying I reckon they’d have given him Chandler as his comeback fight, then maybe even done a McGregor vs Pimblett fight. But they’re not gonna wanna risk Paddy losing to someone who’s likely off as soon as he’s contractually free. I mentioned feeding him to Makhachev before but, as extremely unlikely as McGregor beating Makhachev would be, I don’t think the UFC risk that either just in case. They’re not gonna put McGregor, or anyone, in a title fight when it’s the last fight on their contract. And I don’t blame them. Would be stupid. I’d pick Makhachev to ragdoll McGregor every time but imagine something weird happened like we saw with Pantoja vs Van and McGregor won the bastard title on a technicality? As slim as that chance is, you can’t risk it as the last fight on his contract. I do think though, if Ian Garry somehow beats Makhachev next month (fuck, that’s next month already), with no title at stake I could see them letting Makhachev wreck him on the way out the door. 17 minutes ago, Ironic Indie Lad said: Will be really funny if Holloway batters him and gets the win back. Paid Members Egg Shen Posted July 8 Paid Members Posted July 8 I really don't know where im leaning on this one. Smart money says Holloway but Conor does seem dialled in, i'm starting to think he's genuinely back for the right reasons here. The fact that Max will obviously engage in a fight which suits Conor has me thinking for at least a round or 2 this could be a 50/50 fight. If Conor's timing is on, he's gonna have some crack at 170. Max also coming off that awful loss to Olives. Quote
Dai Posted July 8 Posted July 8 10 years since the Alvarez fight. Only 4 fights since. 3 of which hes lost. The only win was against a past it Cerone. The Poirier fights were 5 years ago, and he was deemed inactive even back then. Five years since last fight, nearly 38 years old. Fighting a legit top fighter. Literally the only thing working in his favour is the 170 weight. Cant see anything other than Max smashing him. Quote

Think she's got some legit wrestling credentials, so there's been alot worse than her in the UFC in the women's division. Quote

I do think though, if Ian Garry somehow beats Makhachev next month (fuck, that’s next month already), with no title at stake I could see them letting Makhachev wreck him on the way out the door. I wondered about this, so did a little bit of reading. In the unlikely event that McGregor did win the UFC championship from Makhachev, he would be contractual bound by the UFC's champions' clause, which contractually ties all of its fighters to the UFC for a specific period of time after either winning or defending the UFC title (often a year). As I understand it, Ngannou simply waited out the 12 months after his successful title defence against Gane in January of 2022. Ngannou then activated a "sunset clause" that had been written into his contract. This clause determined that Ngannou was able to become a free agent after 5 years of his contract being signed, regardless of how many UFC fights he'd participated in (Ngannou's contract was signed in 2017, so by 2022 the clause could be activated). After Ngannou left the UFC, it's believed that the UFC tightened up the clauses in the contracts it issued to fighters. More specifically it's been speculated that if a fighter attempts to do what Ngannou had done previously (sit out until their contract expires), the UFC can make them fight offers. If a fight offer is then refused, the fighter's contract is automatically extended for at least 6 months, or by however long it takes for the UFC to find a replacement opponent. However, I'm not sure if these tighter contract restrictions would apply to McGregor in the event he somehow became champion. It's probable that McGregor's contract, which I assume was signed years ago, long before the Ngannou affair, is structured similarly to Ngannou's (perhaps sans as generous a sunset clause). That is, unless the UFC have renegotiated with McGregor's team in recent years to have the tighter restrictions added to his contract, which seems unlikely. I really can't see the UFC risking a scenario where McGregor wins the title, subsequently sits out for a year until his champion's clause expires, then negotiates a lucrative deal to fight elsewhere. It would make the UFC and one of its belts look second rate. Edited July 8 by jimufctna24 Quote

Paid Members wandshogun09 Posted July 9 Author Paid Members Posted July 9 Conor is still absolutely seething about Khabib handing him his arse. Eight years after the fact. He’s traumatised. He went on some nonsensical rant in an interview, basically saying Khabib was shite, a coward, ran from the UFC and only fought cans pre-UFC. First off, he didn’t just lose to Khabib he got hurt on the feet, was caught audibly asking for mercy (“it’s just business”), was forced to tap and then after that, Khabib gobbed on him and he had to just sit and take it. So if Khabib’s shite what does that make him? Oh he’s trotting out the “I was fresh off the yacht” excuses again, like we weren’t hearing throughout the whole buildup how the “real, motivated Conor McGregor was back” and Khabib was fucked. He loses and now it’s he wasn’t motivated, wasn’t training etc. I love that it still eats away at the prick all these years later to the point he loses his head at just the mention of Khabib’s name. And this bollocks I always hear about Khabib retiring out of fear or cowardice or whatever. Fear of what? He was at his peak and had just finished McGregor, Poirier and Gaethje in consecutive fights. Yeah I’d have liked to have seen more from him but a fighter can retire whenever the fuck they want. They don’t owe us shit. The whole thing is obviously bitterness from salty McGregor fans who desperately wanted to see Khabib lose to someone, anyone, and they hate that he retired and never let them get that. Oh and on his ‘Khabib fought a load of cans pre-UFC’ point, this is who McGregor fought pre-UFC. They both fought some scrubs in their early years, most fighters do. Difference is, Khabib never got subbed in a round by one. Quote
jimufctna24 Posted July 9 Posted July 9 9 minutes ago, wandshogun09 said: And this bollocks I always hear about Khabib retiring out of fear or cowardice or whatever. At the time, the most lucrative opponent for Khabib was Michael Chandler, who the UFC had just poached from Bellator. A name that Khabib didn't really need on his record. The Khabib vs Ferguson dream fight was sadly already dead in the water due to Ferguson losing to Gaethje over the summer of 2020. Ferguson would lose again to Oliveira only a few months after Khabib retired, rendering the fight even more meaningless. Oliveira was on a great run at the time, but it wasn't like he had anywhere near the same buzz around him that Ferguson had prior to 2020, or Gaethje had in the build up to his bout with Khabib. So who was Khabib scared of? The phantom fighter who never existed? Quote

It’s usually twats acting like he was scared of the McGregor rematch. Which is hilarious to me. And again, it’s the whole ‘real McGregor’ myth. Even when he loses, his mutant fans just convince themselves it wasn’t the ‘real’ McGregor that lost and that a rematch would go differently. I did actually used to see Oliveira’s name come up as the guy Khabib ‘ran from’. Which, for the reasons you’ve pointed out, is also utter bollocks. On the night Khabib announced his retirement after beating Gaethje in October 2020, Oliveira was coming off a win over Kevin Lee. A solid win at the time but nothing that would make him the nailed on number one contender. Edited July 9 by wandshogun09 Quote
