I don't think he was injured prefight or even during the intros. He was shown throwing that very kick as a warmup just before walking out. If he did have a pre existing injury, I can't imagine he'd be throwing it backstage and then immediately as the fight started. As he lands on the leg you can see the knee contort nastily. No one with a pre existing injury is going to try something like that and risk making it a whole lot worse.ย  To me it just seemed like he massively over extended and his body just isn't what it was.ย

ย

He's 38, coming back after 5 years after a serious injury, having lived a drug fuled rockstar lifestyle.ย  His body is wrecked and the sport had passed him by.ย

Lot of people are idiots with short memories who are willing to be worked into a frenzy with a good hype job though. There's every chance he does another comeback in a couple of years and I have to listen to morons going "he still has that left hand tho m8"

65 million people tuned in to see Jake Paul fight a 60 year old Mike Tyson. Conor's got 20 years left in him.

Poor Paddy Pimblett. He's tried to make it all about him and claimed he's the new face on the UFC after his performance on Saturday night and McGregor's trainwreck, and even in this thread he barely gets a mention as it's still all about McGregor.

The whole debate about was McGregor injured before the bout, and more importantly exactly when, could actually result in some serious consequences ifย he got injured in training and failed to disclose it on the pre-fight questionnaire issued by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which I believe happens right before the weigh-in (this is going by the Mayweather/Pacquiao lawsuit, so you'd expect the rules to be the same).ย

I think he succeeded, Paddy basically stole the show. Unbelievable status-confirming performance, the guy is legit.

There is precisely 0% chance that McGregor will face serious consequences if he even did get injured before the fight. For a start, how do you even prove that? Its his word vs someone elses. Even if he admits to it, then I dont think the commission would give two shits. Theres been countless times where its clear people are coming in with injuries and still fight.

Paddy, whilst great, in no way stole the show. To steal the show means you have people talking about you. As shown in this thread, everyone was spending their time laughing at Conor. Maybe once the dust settles, people will talk about the Paddy win. Every question people have about Paddy is still there, and nothing new was proved/learnt from this victory, so I wonder how much it will actually raise his stock.

Like what?ย ๐Ÿ˜„ย he just choked out the Number 5 guy unconcious in under 90 seconds, and is coming off a very competitive loss to the current Lightweight Champ.

Put any personal hatred aside, what more does he have to do? They threw him in deep and he's doing just fine.

He's had one fight against a ranked fighter which stayed on the feet, and the biggest positive from that was that he was tough and could take a punch. One fight against admittedly the now champ (who was below par on the night) doesn't prove that he can hang with the rest of the top 5 in stand up, and this performance obviously didnt change that.

For me, just catching someone in the first minute with a choke doesn't even greatly prove that he could deal with the other grapplers in the division also. All the same questions will still be there for his next fight for me.

It's not a case of fighting with an injury, but pre-existing injuries have to be disclosed on the pre-fight questionnaire. Case in point,ย Darrick Minner being banned for two years for not doing so. Phone records can easily be subpoenaed if there's any hint of illegal activity occurring as a result, specifically to do with anyone placing bets based on knowledge of the injury.

From what I can gather, the NSAC did indeed investigate Pacquaio for filling out the questionnaire dishonestly. A member of his team checked "no" on the questionnaire asking if Pacquaio was carrying a serious injury, when in fact Pacquaio was carrying a shoulder injury. However, Pacquaio's team protested that a member of his team had checked "no" incorrectly, which the NSAC accepted (bafflingly), and thus opted not to take significant action against Pacquaio or his team. Thus, no lawsuit was filled by the NSAC as far as I'm aware.ย

A flock of consumers (PPV purchasers, gamblers, ticker buyers), did sue Pacquaio for fraud and deceptive trading, but that lawsuit was thrown out in 2017.ย

Weโ€™ve pretty much said all there is to say about the main event. Add me to the list of people who donโ€™t buy that he was injured going in though. He was moving fine at the weigh in. Every clip of him throughout the show on the night, arriving at the arena and all that bollocks, he was walking fine. No sign of an injury on his walkout. The only thing you can possibly look at is that moment when heโ€™s taking his shoes off before he gets in the cage. But even that, I think itโ€™s something of nothing, and then immediately after heโ€™s walking up the Octagon steps with no issue and bouncing around the cage doing his stupid Vinny Mac strut. You wouldnโ€™t be doing all that if your knee was already fucked. And of course, you definitely wouldnโ€™t try something like this as your first moveโ€ฆ

blSjx.gif

Like always with McGregor, itโ€™s people looking for excuses. But to be honest, I donโ€™t know what difference it makes whether he was injured pre-fight or during the fight. I mean it does from a betting standpoint and a company perspective. If they knew he was injured and let him fight because there was too much money wrapped up in the event. Yeah, thereโ€™d obviously be something to discuss there. But his fans going on like itโ€™s somehow face saving for McGregor if he was already hurt going in, I donโ€™t get it. Whether he was injured before the fight or during it, it all comes back to him just not being physically up to it anymore. Heโ€™s done. Itโ€™s over. Heโ€™ll fight again. He desperately wants out of his UFC contract. If he has to crawl to the cage, heโ€™ll fight again. But itโ€™s over. Conor McGregor, as a fighter, has been finished since 2021. I bet they feed him to Carlos Prates or something for his last fight ๐Ÿคฃ

Seen a bunch of backlash against Max. Fuck โ€˜em. I get that him calling for a third fight in that moment, to a crowd who paid extortionate prices only to watch McGregor disintegrate in seconds, was tone deaf. But the manโ€™s head mustโ€™ve been all over the place. Bollocks to the McTwats desperately trying to make Max the bad guy here. Iโ€™m happy for him. Easiest money heโ€™s ever made and now he might even get a third go. Good on him.ย

Gotta say, as much as I canโ€™t stand him, fucking Paddy Pimblett was the big winner on this card wasnโ€™t he? And I might be going mad but was it just me who felt like he even got the bigger superstar reaction for his walkout than McGregor did in the main event? I was also surprised how much the Yanks were cheering him. Granted, he was against a French bloke. Had he been fighting an American Iโ€™m sure itโ€™d have been different. But I canโ€™t really remember a British fighter in the UFC getting an overwhelmingly positive reaction like that from an American crowd. And the fight itselfโ€ฆ

IMG-2223.jpg

IMG-1624.jpg

Fuck me. Firstly, the sub itself was a beauty. Basically a Dโ€™Arce but rolled into a sit-out position and he just compressed everything down until Benoit went out cold. I hate being positive about Paddy but it was a cool finish, no denying it. And he did that to the #5 ranked guy, so even my usual criticism of him not having a win over anyone ranked, thatโ€™s gone now. Butโ€ฆI do get what @Daiย is saying as well. Itโ€™s a strong win, easily Paddyโ€™s best win now, and a great way to bounce back from that Gaethje loss. But itโ€™d be disingenuous to deny that Benoit fought like an absolute idiot here as well. What was he playing at? On paper he had the edge on the feet, so he just shoots in recklessly, serving his neck up on a plate. Paddy even said after that he saw Benoit do that at the start of almost every fight and he did it again here. Heโ€™s a dangerous guy but clearly not the smartest. Again, canโ€™t knock Paddy for that. He did his homework, recognised the bad habit of Benoit and capitalised on it. But itโ€™s hard to really take too much away from this. We all knew Paddy had a good submission game going in. Thatโ€™s his best strength. His actual takedowns arenโ€™t the best so, in theory, Benoit shouldโ€™ve been able to mostly keep this on the feet, where Paddy also isnโ€™t very good. So instead he dives right into Paddyโ€™s main strength? Le goof.

What next for Paddy? The obvious answer is Topuria. I thought that fight was dead in the water after Paddy lost to Gaethje but that was because I didnโ€™t for-see Topuria losing the belt to Gaethje. Look where we are now. Mad how quickly the landscape can change. I think it makes more sense than ever now. I donโ€™t think Topuria deserves an immediate rematch against Gaethje, not with the way it played out. And I donโ€™t think Paddy deserves a title shot coming off a win over BSD, especially when heโ€™s already just recently lost to current champ Gaethje. But Topuria beating Paddy or Paddy beating Topuria? Depending how they do it, you can probably justify a title shot after that. Add to that theyโ€™ve been beefing since 2022. And just the timing of it. Before that White House card, I think everyone saw a potential Topuria vs Pimblett fight as a nightmare match and a bad night for Paddy. Iโ€™d still absolutely pick Topuria to win but his loss to Gaethje and now Paddy pissing through Benoit, it makes it more interesting. You could also do Paddy vs Max or even Paddy vs Oliveira. But I say make Topuria vs Paddy while you can. Thatโ€™s the one.

Thought Bautista vs Sandhagen 2 was a really good fight that was just unlucky to have to try to follow Royval vs Kavanagh. I think everyone expected this one to be much more competitive than their first fight and it definitely was. Bautistaโ€™s a much better fighter than he was in 2019. Really thought for a second that Bautista was gonna return the favour and submit Sandhagen in a round when he went for the Suloev Stretch and the kneebar. Sandhagenโ€™s said since that he thinks the kneebar tore his hamstring. You could see his movement was hindered after that. Felt like the right man won but thereโ€™s an argument to give Sandhagen the first round IMO.

Royval vs Kavanagh was quality. Almost a shame they were on this card really. A fight like that deserves to be talked about a lot more than it has been but Iโ€™ve barely seen anything about it online because it got lost in all the McGregor shite. This couldโ€™ve easily headlined a Fight Night and I kind of wish it did now.

IMG-1742.jpg

Shit result for Kavanagh coming off that great performance against Moreno in Mexico. A win over Royval here wouldโ€™ve had him on a serious wave of momentum. And he certainly had his moments. Heโ€™s gonna regret jumping for that guillotine in the third though. On the flip side, what a rebound for Royval. Coming off back-to-back losses last year, got done in a round by Kape in his last fight, gets matched up with this young prospect with the matchmakers probably looking at him as a spent force, gets dropped and itโ€™s starting to look rough, absolutely refuses to fuck off and then finishes Kavanagh in the last round. Seems like every time Iโ€™m about to count Royval out, he wins one of these fights heโ€™s being positioned to lose. Donโ€™t know what you do with Royval now though. Kavanagh vs Horiguchi could be great, although I donโ€™t really wanna see either lose their next fight. Plenty of options at Flyweight though.

Green vs McKinney was about exactly as youโ€™d picture it in your head. One round (just about) of mayhem, twists and turns, then Green survived the initial onslaught and put McKinney away. We all know McKinney is a pure โ€˜live by the swordโ€™ type but heโ€™s definitely a front runner. Itโ€™s a hell of a storm to weather but weโ€™ve seen a few times now that if you can survive that early attack, McKinney isnโ€™t the same fighter. I felt like the ref mightโ€™ve been a tad quick to wave it off though, to be honest. McKinney was putting it on Green much worse and it wasnโ€™t stopped, then as soon as McKinney got hurt the ref jumped in. Whatever, seen worse.

Chuffed to see Robert Whittaker not just get the win but force a finish in his Light Heavyweight debut. Yeah I know Krylov is nothing special but considering Whittaker is clearly too small for 205, I thought heโ€™d probably win but I was pleasantly surprised he was able to stop Krylov.

blSjs.gif

Nasty finish as well. If thatโ€™s not a broken jaw then Krylovโ€™s lucky. I still donโ€™t really like Whittaker being at 205 and I donโ€™t see him having consistent success going forward. Can still see him trying to go back to 185 with Strickland being champ and a fresh fight. But going up and down in weight like that rarely works out for the best.

On a side note, I know Iโ€™m a broken record moaning about Rogan whenever he works a card these days but was anyone else getting really sick of him going on throughout the whole fight about Whittaker looking fat? Yeah he definitely didnโ€™t look in his best shape but Jesus Christ man. Also the fact itโ€™s coming from Rogan of all people, Mr โ€˜I think they should abolish weight cutting and everyone should fight at their walk-around weightโ€™, isnโ€™t lost on me. Now heโ€™s amazed that a guy essentially fighting at his walk-around weight โ€œlooks differentโ€?

Oh and side note #2 - As shit as Rogan was on commentary during this fight, I really wasnโ€™t a fan of that bit in the fight where they cut to an alternate commentary team with Din Thomas, Theo Von and whoever the other fella was. The โ€˜Sidecastโ€™ I think they called it. Itโ€™s one thing offering a different commentary team as an alternative option, but donโ€™t just switch to it mid fight and inflict them on me against my will. Dinโ€™s fine, former fighter, coach etc. I wouldnโ€™t mind him being rotated in as an actual colour commentator occasionally. But why do I need to hear Theo Vonโ€™s nothing takes mid fight? I hope this doesnโ€™t become a thing now but you know itโ€™s gonna.

Gable Steveson getting the first round finish was probably the least surprising result on the whole card. Elisha Ellison is as close to a pure jobber as there is in the division, this was always supposed to be a squash match.

blSjL.gif

Gotta say though, I got big time Aaron Pico vibes off him watching this. I know itโ€™s early days and thereโ€™s plenty of time for him to tighten up his game but, if he continues to fight like this, itโ€™s exciting to watch but I can see him getting chinned before too long. I guess the major difference with Pico is that he was fighting in divisions where the overall skill level is much higher. Steveson being at Heavyweight, he can probably get away with fighting reckless against those blobs to a certain point. But at the same time, the big lads hit harder as well so a mistake at Heavyweight can be more violently costly than any other weight class. And even against a guy who was supposed to be a pushover here, he got tagged way more than youโ€™d expect of some big time prospect. Time will tell. I donโ€™t think theyโ€™ll put him in with anyone good for a while yet anyway. Fully rooting against him regardless.

Felt like Adrian Yanez drove the final nail in the career of Cody Garbrandt here. Fuck me that finish was vicious.

blSjp.gif

I know he won his previous fight but, man, what are we doing here? Since that title win over Dominick Cruz that everyone still bangs on about a decade later, heโ€™s gone 4-8 and was finished in 6 of those 8 losses. At 35, itโ€™s only gonna get worse from here, not better. He looked like he came out looking for a fire fight here but he doesnโ€™t have the chin for it and Yanez made him pay. Just as the commentators were talking about Garbrandt taking shots better these days as well. Ha. Happy for Yanez. Heโ€™s had a proper up and down run of results in recent fights. Good to see him get the first round finish over a name on a big card.

Luke Riley kept the undefeated record alive, improves to 14-0 with 10 finishes and made short work of Kai Kamaka.

blSjM.gif

Rogan was immediately calling it an early stoppage but, I donโ€™t know. Maybe a little bit. It didnโ€™t look like there was a lot of that final flurry actually landing clean but Kamaka had already been dropped just before this and then there were a couple of good shots that got through right at the end. I didnโ€™t have a big problem with it. He was on his feet but there was nothing coming back from him and he looked like heโ€™d frozen and was just gonna eat more punishment. Nice return to form for Riley here after he was vocally disappointed in himself going to a decision in his last fight. Bunch of fun fights you can make with Riley at Featherweight. Canโ€™t really go wrong.

The Wang Cong vs Tracy Cortez fight did nothing for me. Probably the only outright shit fight on the card. The highlight of these two all fight week was Cong giving Cortez some fake eyelashes at the weigh in, referring to the time Cortez literally got her fake lashes punched off in the Namajunas fight. Fight itself was arse and the only thing of note that happened was Congโ€™s blatant illegal knee, which she later tried to brush off as a โ€œmisunderstanding in translationโ€. Nah. Not having it. Bored of her banging on about fighting Valentina Shevchenko now as well. I get why sheโ€™s doing it but itโ€™s a waste of time. Sheโ€™s not getting a title shot when sheโ€™s going the distance with Tracy Cortez and failing to finish her even after battering her legs to bits.

All jokes about his name aside, Damian Pinas looks like he might be an issue. Still questions to answer and tests to pass yet but heโ€™s certainly got game changing punching power.

blSiP.gif

Almeida got absolutely walloped. Pinas has a 100% finish rate (stop it) as well. Not sure who they match him up with next and I doubt they make this fight at this stage of both their careers but Iโ€™d love to see him against Ateba Gautier. Sod it. Iโ€™m kind of done wanting to see fighters get the slow build. Chuck these bombers in with each other and letโ€™s see what happens.

Farid Basharat stays unbeaten but it wasnโ€™t the best fight to watch. Did think Garza gave a solid account of himself in defeat though. To come in on just a few days notice against a tricky, undefeated opponent, he did pretty well all things considered. Heard Basharat saying this was the last fight on his UFC contract and, despite being undefeated, it honestly wouldnโ€™t shock me if they decided to not re-sign him and just cut him loose. Itโ€™d be harsh and Iโ€™m not saying Iโ€™d agree with it, but we all know by now that his style isnโ€™t one they like. They also let his brother Javid go earlier this year and, while Javid wasnโ€™t unbeaten like Farid and he did have some losses, he was coming off a win when they binned him. Wouldnโ€™t be surprised at all if they get rid.

Ryan Gandra scored a peach of a left hook KO over Zach Reese.

blSiG.gif

Not much else to say, the fight was about a minute long and the gif is pretty self explanatory. Couldโ€™ve done without Rogan and Cormier comparing the KO to Joe Frazier. Calm down. Nice finish though.

Thoroughly enjoyed Alessandro Costa throttling a bloody Cody Durden in the Fight Pass opener. Nice way to kick off the card seeing a twat get finished. Set the tone nicely. Nice win for Costa on short notice here. Heโ€™s never gonna amount to much but he pretty much always brings it and brightens up the prelims and Fight Night cards.

Yeah, a really good card overall. Obviously the main event was a massive anti-climax but even that didnโ€™t ruin it for me just because it was so satisfying seeing McGregorโ€™s big comeback fail in hilarious fashion and him once again being sidelined. Lovely stuff. Most of the rest of the card was fun. Bunch of finishes, a Whittaker win which is always good to see and the Royval vs Kavanagh corker.

A year ago, id have said Topuria/Paddy at 155lb was a mismatch with Topuria winning, today I think I might even favour Paddy, especially given the size difference there would be between the two.

That's one of the top 5 fights that can be made in the sport, imagine if they took it to Spain, would be massive.

Spain or the UK would work. And the bonus is shouldย be on prime time for us. I say should because you never know. Pricks did Leon vs Belal 2 in Manchester and whacked it on Yank time.ย
