CTXRussomark Posted October 10, 2025 Posted October 10, 2025 I don't know if it's really a difficult game or just a badly designed one (or me just being thick) but I found Donkey Kong 64 to be absolutely baffling. I remember just wandering around aimlessly with no real idea of what I was meant to be doing or what I was meant to be achieving. All the hype around it at the time was it was going to blow (the amazing) Super Mario 64 out of the water and was so big it needed the separate expansion pack just to play it, but I got absolutely nowhere with it despite multiple attempts. One of the lone negatives when I think back to my N64 days. Quote

I loved Diddy Kong Racing but never managed to win the final Wizpig race. I had a friend who had completed it (after which you had to complete the whole game again in reverse, from memory) and he loved to rub it in my face any chance he got. I wasn't too bad at R-Type but the C64 conversion of Ghosts 'n Goblins must have been a really good one because I got to the second level once in all the times I played it. A ridiculous game. Quote

There were loads of platformers based on movies/TV shows on SNES and Mega Drive in the early-mid 90s and I remember almost all of them were insanely difficult for some reason. Deathtrap Dungeon is the first that comes to mind for me. First game I ever bought on Playstation back in 1999, and I still haven't completed it - got to Melkor, the final boss, but I made the mistake of not having enough charms and extras, and now I can't beat him at all. Arcade-wise, I loved Double Dragon, but man - took a load of credits to beat it. Space Harrier on arcade was fiendish, although much easier on console. Quote

There is a spectacularly broken way to one credit that game. Look up the back elbow exploit. I went on holiday to Holland in 92 and there was another British lad at the resort who showed me it. This is how I know I’ve regressed as a gamer - I defeated Wizpig when I was younger, but replaying it now, it feels like an impossibility. Your race has to be flawless, you have to be fucking fantastic at boosting and essentially memorise the track if you’re going to have even a chance of winning. He’s a ridiculous final boss for a game like that. Quote

The rumour was that lion king was made to be challenging so people would rent it and have to keep renting it so they would make money on it. Hideous. Heart of darkness was not easy from memory, either that or it's just boring so I gave up early on. My biggest nomination though is comix zone. Punching walls damages you and weakens you so enemies molest you with ease. Never got past 2nd level to even see the superhero.... Rubbish. Oh, and sonic and knuckles pyramid level was hideous too.
