Just a pity that both the top and bottom feel like foregone conclusions already with the gap at each end standing at an enormous 17 points. Chutney Spoon got his D2D bet correct, but almost nobody disagreed with him. That might feel unfair and not in the spirit of things, but those are the risks when you choose a national team. Given the convoluted way qualifying for major tournaments works now, England have been drawn with nothing but fellow "A" sides in their group so in theory any away fixture should be tricky... and they did only win 1-0 after all. The leading duo, Vegeta and TildeGuy, also claimed bonuses thanks to a last-gasp Virgil van Dijk winner at Bramley Moore Dock since the randomly selected "wildcard" was match #5, the Merseyside derby. Had it remained at 1-1, everyone else would've received one extra point instead. Elsewhere, victories for Leeds, Man City and (eventually) Celtic all proved fruitful, whereas a home reverse for Sporting plus the Copa del Rey final going all the way to spot kicks generally caught people out. Yet more losses for Newcastle Utd and Chelsea, the former putting Eddie Howe under more pressure and the latter contributing to Liam Rosenior's sacking, produced a mixed bag of guesses alongside a dramatic late score draw at Spurs. Nobody disgraced themselves this time, with everyone getting at least one exact scoreline and no total below eight points. Although the competition obviously requires some people to be rubbish sometimes (and boy, have I obliged on that front this season), it's nice to have a week like that occasionally. The order of the day was 2-1 to either the home or away side which generally proved fruitful, with only slight variants catching people out in the form of: the second Wembley tie, Liverpool managing to bag a third against previous bogey side Palace, and a catenaccio stalemate in Italy. Oh, and there was a further 1-0 too. To wit... Bonuses went to myself and Stinky Dad for getting the nervy outcome between two out-of-sorts sides spot on. That's because the randomly selected "wildcard" fixture was match #6 at The Emirates. That's enough to see Stinky move up to fourth at the expense of Chutney Spoon and MVP RULZ, while the gap at the bottom is also therefore down to ten points, lower than the 16-point lead at the summit. Is Rory perhaps still in wooden spoon danger after all? It's probably too late for ultimo to win the whole thing, but he's 36 points off a silver medal spot with, crucially, a D2D still to come. It's ended up being the last one because his original second choice was a terrifically named team in Cameroon whom both my international sources sadly have no record of since 2023, and even their own social was last updated in June of last year. I gave it one last try and went down the rabbit hole of the Cameroonian FA's website to search for links or fixtures to their main Cup or the third tier, but only the general rules and regulations for both competitions was forthcoming. So instead we turn to his third pick, a Belarusian team who of course play their season on a calendar year, so I had to wait until the middle of last month for fixtures to be published, and only about a week ago to make sure the game I had in mind didn't get moved to Friday night or Saturday lunchtime.
