I love seeing the Hart Foundation going over their promo backstage. Paraphrasing but… Bret: You can say something like, ‘We’ll leave no man untested.’ Anvil: ‘Leave no man untested!’ Bret: Maybe finish with, ‘We’re gonna get hungry and forget our manners’. Anvil: ‘We’re gonna get hungry…and leave no man untested’. *Bret starts laughing. I love the fact that footage like that was captured. Also really like seeing them going over the match and Bret’s talking about Austin maybe getting physical with Stu and chucking a drink on him. The glee in Bret’s eyes as the wheels in his head are turning and he goes ‘It could even be Stu’s drink!’ is great. Bischoff loves to shit on Bret and say he used to just turn up and say ‘what have you got for me?’ and never had any ideas himself but clips like this are evidence caught on video to the contrary. You could clearly see that when Bret had something to sink his teeth into, he was 100% locked in and trying to come up with little details to make his matches and/or promos better. Wasn’t the Canadian Stampede footage in Wrestling With Shadows where Bret uttered the immortal line of ‘Go bother the Headbangers’ to Blade? Might’ve been Survivor Series. Either way, I love that. I rewatched Wrestling With Shadows again sometime last year and there’s also a bit I didn’t remember where Bret’s with some of his kids and Vince comes over. And I don’t know if it’s because I was viewing it through the lens of what we know now about Vince but there was something really creepy about the way he looked at Bret’s daughter who must’ve been a teenager at the time. And yeah, I’ve heard Bischoff spout that bollocks a few times along with the old favourite “Bret came to WCW and he was unmotivated and checked out”. Not buying it for one second. I love Bret but nowhere near as much a Bret loves himself. Just for the personal pride and ego factor, I’m not having that Bret would go there not giving a shit. If there was ever a time when Bret would be mega motivated, it was post-Montreal when he had an opportunity to go to WCW and show Vince how badly he fucked up by choosing Shawn. Why would he be checked out? He was heading to a company that had a roster full of both big names and great talent, he was gonna be making more money than he’d ever made before and he had a chance to stick it to Vince by helping the other guys keep beating him. The fact is, Bischoff was such an idiot and ‘The WCW’ was so messed up that they somehow managed to take one of the best wrestlers in the world, coming off the best year of his career and coming in hot off sparking Vince McMahon FFS…and rendered him a mid-card guy in no time. They took a guy who was absolutely obsessed with wrestling and lived for it and wore him down to where he became disillusioned and just said ‘just give me my cheque’. That takes some doing. Whereas the idea that he was turning up and just saying, "what have you got for me?" sounds like Bischoff fishing for shit to say about someone he doesn't like. If anyone else in WCW was turning up and asking what their booking was, rather than constantly trying to get their own shit in and shooting their own angles, he'd be praising them as consumate professionals. Though Bret always struck me as someone who would take whatever he was given, and then make it work through perfecting the fine details, rather than constantly pitching the whole story from start to finish. Paid Members Supremo Posted February 1 Paid Members Posted February 1 (edited) Binging through the In Your House shows, skipping the Big Four events, it’s wild watching Ground Zero, where seemingly overnight Stone Cold has completely clicked and became the man who’ll eventually be the biggest star of all time. There he is! There’s our Steve! It’s bizarre watching him on shows like Revenge of the Taker, Cold Day in Hell and even Canadian Stampede because it’s all there apart from the fact that he’s still a wrestler doing wrestling moves. Loads of plodding, technical grappling that doesn't really work. There’s a real sense of just one thing missing. Mad that the one thing missing was a broken neck that would first force him to stop wrestling entirely, then return as a brawler. Genuinely fascinating to imagine how things would have turned out if he didn’t break his neck at Summerslam 1997. You assume he’d have still made it to the top, but would the highs have been as high as they were? Would it have taken him longer to peak? It was like fate stepped in and gave him that final nudge. He needed two months just cutting pissed off promos and then a neck that refused to let him continue being a technician between the ropes. One of those Quantum Leap moments where if you were travelling through time for the betterment of the business, you’d whisper in Owen’s ear, “sit on your arse rather than go to your knees.
