Fuck megathreads. Let's talk about Lynch films, Twin Peaks, his art, his music, etc here. Seems like there's probably enough of us who like his work to justify it.

He was a wonder and beautiful man.

I feel like a lot of people write his stuff off as weird or they try to understand it and break it down but really the key to Lynch's stuff is how it makes you feel in that very moment.

I think my favourite thing about his work is that yes, there's lots of creepy and disturbing stuff, but instead the soft, light and earnest moments. There's not a hint of irony in anything he's done.

I don't think anyone has ever truly captured dream logic in art like him.

This scene is incredible. It starts off confusing and kind of funny but then gets increasingly more disturbing. You have no idea what the fuck is happening, it's never explained or referenced again but the tone and vibe is so offputting, wrong and  scary.

Posted in the Music Videos thread. It's worth remembering he composed music as well. (Video by someone else, but he chose it out of a number of candidates.)

GREAT. Now I'm going to have this stuck in my head for days again thanks to you wankers.

AND I've just lost The Game.

Saw a satirical faux-obituary headline that said his funeral will "put attendees through a surreal dream journey"

I'll admit I enjoyed his less mind-bending work but the impenetrable stuff still had a great vibe to it.

There was never a dodgy link in the first place?

I just got hit by some pop-ups on that site.

Ah shoot, removed. I think the headline in the URL said enough to nail the Twin Peaks-style atmosphere anyway.

As much as I loved Twin Peaks and the strangeness in his other movies, my favourite is and always will be The Straight Story.  Just a couple of hours of not much, but so much.

I knew David did a video for Wicked Game but only just found out he did it for Chris when he couldn't afford to get one recorded.

I wonder what happened to FBI Special Agent Chet Desmond..?

I'd have been interested to see his version of Return Of The Jedi if he'd taken George Lucas up on his offer. I remember watching Lost Highway with some friends and it was weird. I also really enjoyed Straight Story. He made some cracking films.

I guess in a way the closest you get to Return of the Jedi is Dune. A scene that really creeps out one of my mates is when Baron Harkonnen pulls the lad's heart plug out and is bathing himself in the blood with the really unpleasant overtones.

That the Harkonnens have heart plugs at all is the most notable change he makes to the story. It was an interesting choice; it made them seem unnecessarily cruel, but I could never quite get why they would give themselves them.

I guess maybe so they can top themselves up on blood from someone else, perhaps?

The brilliant BBC Archive has uploaded a great clip of his interview with Mark Cousins at the time of the release of The Straight Story. Making a movie could just be a case of film this, film that, put it all together, slap a bow on it and send it out to be watched and forgotten, but he uses the analogy of "the eye of the duck" and you realise why he's a genius.
