Not surprised - if it wasn't part of an angle, it was pretty over the top for a partner. Called Tony Khan a money mark, slagged off Okada and Ospreay, saying they hadn't achieved anything, and said the Continental Classic was nothing compared to the G1. None of those three things are untrue but it is rude to say them on a live PPV. Quote

I thought this was going to be some part of a new angle as he really went for AEW...and I don't ever remember Excalibur doing anything like that when any of the NJPW wrestlers appeared. At one point the other commentator (who I liked a lot more) tried to calm him down too. Considering how thin-skinned TK can be...I'd love to have seen his reaction listening to that ? Quote
Chili Posted January 6, 2025 Posted January 6, 2025 Chris Charlton sounds like a mouthy unprofessional gobshite to be honest. Slag off all the promotions you want if they don't work for you and you have an agenda, you can deal with it after if circumstances change. Slag off a partner your promotion is actually working with is just very, very dim. Quote
Snitsky's back acne Posted January 6, 2025 Posted January 6, 2025 Isn't the representative of one company supposed to bash the invading/competing company or am I being too naive? Quote
Paid Members Statto Posted January 6, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 6, 2025 When I first read about it i did assume it was planting seeds for some kind of angle to make Forbidden Door a bit more of an antagonistic thing this year, but that wouldn't make a whole lot of sense really with it being on neutral ground. Reminds me of the build to the first Forbidden Door when absolutely everyone treated it as a collaborative supershow except William Regal, who was trying to build that Moxley was somehow defending AEW against Tanahashi & NJPW, despite the card having several matches where wrestlers from either promotion teamed up with one another. You're not being naive, it just sounded like he gobbed off on his own accord. If he didn't, then NJPW themselves suspended a person who did his job too well, which I don't think happened. Quote

He's pretty much seen as the guy that managed to pave the way for both companies to work together. Of all the people to do this weird thing next to, Rocky Romero was one of the worst to do it. Apparently, it's nothing to do with AEW being upset - other people in NJPW are furious because it makes them look bad. Quote

EDIT: I wonder if he's close with Kevin Kelly and decided to have a dig to avenge him, or if he's purely just a total ham head. Edited January 6, 2025 by gmoney Quote

Paid Members Lorne Malvo Posted January 7, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 7, 2025 (edited) I thought that was a slog of a show, to be honest (Dynasty that is - I didn't watch WK19). It was essentially a New Japan show with some AEW wrestlers, and as such I had the same issues that I always do with NJPW - I just find the overall presentation and pacing of their shows exhausting. There are always good individual matches but I always struggle to sit through a whole show. Athena getting beat for the first time in over two years on a pre-show is an absolute waste, but that baseball bat shot was very well done - it looked brutal! Tanahashi vs Shibata in a 5-minute exhibition was one of the most pointless 'matches' I've ever seen. I'm not one of those guys who needs a story behind every match, but the commentary team were absolutely woeful at explaning the build-up to matches and why certain things were happening. Was very surprised at Young Bucks winning the tag titles. If it keeps them out of AEW for a while I'm all for it. It wasn't all bad. Shota vs Claudio, ZSJ vs Ricochet and Mina vs Mercedes were all hits for me. I need to check out more Umino, he's one of those guys I always enjoy the few times he pops up in AEW. Kenny Omega is leagues above everyone, isn't he? Absolutely incredible. Edited January 7, 2025 by Lorne Malvo Quote
Paid Members Chris B Posted January 7, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 7, 2025 Damn, I forgot to mention that - yeah, Mina vs Mercedes was a lot of fun, and Mercedes really does feel like a big deal again. While her promos are what they are, it really highlights just how bad Britt Baker's 2024 was. That should have been a slam-dunk of a match, and Mercedes has had a really good run of big matches everywhere else with pretty much everyone else. No wonder she was pretty much binned off immediately. Really couldn't have failed on a much larger stage. Quote
