I started on kerrang! In about 91-94 then moved to Melody Maker and NME (Newspapers not magazines) which I took both of weekly until melody maker closed, I used to love Select for the posters, when I went to uni I started buying Bizarre along with various wank mags, bizarre was ace for about two years when it was new then it went monthly and got a bit shit. I had issues 2-6 of Grand Royal which I looked after as if they belonged in a museum until I moved into a pub and had to store a load of things in the garage which then flooded, I lost loads of book and magazines in the great flood of 2006 but Grand Royal is the one that still upsets me to this day. They were complete with all the inserts and were amazing pieces of work. I never got the first issue, Tower Records didn't get that in sadly.

Price is definitely a massive thing for me. I love physical copies but sometimes I just can't justify the price.

For example, I'm on an annual digital only subscription for Retro Gamer for £14.99 that I picked up on a Black Friday sale. I think the physical copy is probably £5 a month or something? Can't remember but can't be far off.

Also because I'm old school, I still buy TV guides. So I've got an annual digital subscription to TV & Satellite for £27 where I think it's £3 a week or similar so massive saving there.

So I'll sacrifice the physical copies if the price is good enough. Some of the monthly magazine library subscriptions are decent but I don't have the time to read enough to justify them. But if a few months pop up cheap on Black Friday deals or similar then I'll dip in and out.

That and the wife always tells me I don't need to keep all these things damnit.

It's funny how things stick with you isn't it? I'll never forget a letter to Select after they slagged off Placebo (probably quite rightly) and the writer kept using Brain instead of Brian which the editor kept popping in (sic) after every one until he lost it and cut the letter off. I don't even really watch TV in a live sense anymore (does anyone?) but I love a TV guide and will always buy the Christmas edition of the Radio Times, again, despite 95% of it being irrelevant to me.

Same really. It's very much my way of just keeping up with what's on when because there's so bloody much of it. And just setting things to record or reminders. It's just nice to have a weekly summary or else I do miss things. Plus there's always some dull train or airport documentaries on that I love watching that I'll dip into. So it definitely has its uses.

Of course the Christmas one definitely gets bought physically and we let the kids highlight it. But yeah no way i could justify £3 an issue on it.

Up until very recently I still had a subscription to Darts World magazine. The only magazine I get now is the Christmas tv guide where I tick off all the things I never end up watching. 

I do remember my evolution through mags. Beano & Dandy, Match & Shoot, PlayStation and WWF magazine were all in the same time period for me. There was a magazine when I was around 11/12 called FBX. Which stood for For Boys Exclusively. That didn’t last long but I remember really enjoying it. Then it went to Kerrang, Metal Hammer, FHM, Loaded, Nuts and Zoo when I became a metal obsessed and clearly hormonal teenager. A good chunk of all these magazines are probably in my loft somewhere still.

I would get the odd NME and Four Four Two in recent years but my interest in magazines has gone. I still occasionally look in the supermarket to see if anything can grab my attention though.

but it had a Goosebumps comic! Which is obviously fantastic.

My gran who is well into her 90's is the only person I know who still gets a TV guide, which is fair enough considering she hasn't got the internet. Insists I buy her TV Choice each week "because it's the cheapest one". Her house alone is worth upwards of half a million quid.

Another for PlayStation mag here. Again, right up to the end of the PS2 era. Some wonderful memories which I threw into the recycling a decade ago.

I still have that issue somewhere. Would it be a great surprise to you all that the spy pen did not work at all. It was a dud. I think my mum nicked me another pen from another issue in the shop. 

Speaking of my mum, she’s a bit of a hoarder and used to have stacks and stacks of Chat and Take A Break magazines all over the place.

As a pre-teen and teenager, bought all the expected wrestling, computer and video games, music and lad mags, but there were two "collect the series" I got hooked on, one good and one bad.

The good:

Great fantasy series, which used real mythological creatures and the like as the basis for their villains, which rebooted after a year as a sci-fi series.

The bad:

NEVER read the magazine, but you got a mineral in a little square case and a gemstone in a little circular case, which could be stored with other ones in collector cases. When we eventually moved house, and I was old enough to be able to swear in front of my parents without getting told off, I tripped and fell walking across the front garden into our new house while carrying them in and they all tumbled out and broke the cases and went all over the grass. A half-hearted "Fuck it", followed by a feeling of "Just put them in the fucking bin". I think my mom tried to recover them, but as soon as I could get rid of their spoiled remains I did.

Such a great thread which highlighted how many magazines I have consumed over the years. Dandy, CVG, power slam (my favourite), raw... these days it's private eye, viz and new statesman. God, I'm boring.

 

Tempted to order some past favourites of PowerSlam for the nostalgia.

I used to get Quest. I also used read Power Slam (in about 5 minutes) and FSM/Fighting Spirit or whatever other names it had. I did have a spell of reading WWF and WCW magazine in the early 90s, but was annoyed by them being about 2 months behind.

Loved Power Slam, GamesMaster, Never really cared for the "Official" mags. Felt too Kayfabe for my liking. Then Driv3rgate showed them to be scumbags.

First bought When Saturday Comes in 1998 because it had Arsenal players on the front. Of course, on closer inspection, it was a piss take of our poor disciplinary record, with the speech bubble/caption of Martin Keown saying “ref! It’s my turn to be sent off” or words to that effect. I still loved the whole thing, anyway. I’d never encountered that kind of thoughtful, measured, critical writing about football before and it resonated massively with my teenage brain. Bought it religiously for many years, but only pick it up occasionally now, though a lot of the writing has stayed with me. 

Used to get Private Eye a bit but rarely these days. GB Action I used to love for all the gameboy game reviews. Pretty sure they had an archive of reviews of every game in the back of every issue. Oh and Quiz kids, being a total nerd, obvs.
