Paid Members BomberPat Posted March 17 Paid Members Posted March 17 (edited) The timeline does jump around a lot, and there's a bit of a whopper in terms of implying that WWF became WWE in the Attitude era, though nothing that mattered in the long run. We talked about a lot, and I had no idea what was going to make it into the final episode - ahead of time, I was asked to be prepared for questions on Wrestlemania 3, the Attitude Era, the Montreal Screwjob, and Owen Hart. The Screwjob didn't really make it in, and I talked a bit about the Screwjob as a precursor for "neo-kayfabe", which isn't really an accepted concept, it was just me exploring the general premise of kayfabe shifting rather than being broken as you might expect, and Jamie ran with that as if Neo-Kayfabe was an established truth. It works for the episode, but made me grimace a bit at the thought of some grumpy wrestling old-timers I know listening to it and thinking he was chatting shit. The AI bit is a sort of necessary evil - it ties into the theme of the series, and as much as it's a daft gimmick, it serves a purpose. They asked my permission to alter my voice, and I did go back and forth on whether to allow that or not, but felt I would trust the production on their reasoning. Jamie's usually good on the negatives of new tech, after all. At the end of the day, I talked to them for well over an hour, and we corresponded by email for months, and it was never going to cover all of that. I'm happy with the end product, and the wrestling side skipping around all over the place doesn't matter so much in the scope of the series as a whole. I had forgotten that they had asked me for some contacts for wrestling personalities that were there for some of the events we talked about until Jeff Jarrett popped up, so that was a fun surprise! I had zero memory of Ahmed coming out to a mash-up of his and the Nation’s music. Had to double check and there it is… Quote

He looks the absolute business. Unfortunately he was injured and replaced by Rocky Maivia a week later. Total Sliding Door moment. davertfnewman Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Ahmed claims that the angle was supposed to see him destroy the Nation from within and turn face again but the injury curtailed that. He also claims that Vince told him he couldn't keep him heel for too long because he made the Nation look too scary. There's a definite difference between Nation Ahmed and red trunks Ahmed. A few months later, he looks like he's going to have a nervous breakdown. Quote

Obviously Ahmed winning that Battle Royal on Raw in summer 96 earned him a title shot, but I can’t even picture a Shawn vs Ahmed all babyface title match in 96. I always assumed the plan was actually to set Ahmed up as Vader’s first title challenger, assuming Vader was gonna win the title at SummerSlam, before Shawn would win it back. But my timeline doesn’t really work because wasn’t the plan for Vader to win the belt off Shawn, not at SummerSlam but at Survivor Series, then drop it back at the Rumble before Sid took his spot? It’s a weird one. Maybe they were actually gonna squeeze Shawn vs Ahmed in somewhere but I doubt it would’ve happened on Raw like the eventual Shawn vs Goldust backup plan did. Just all seemed like strange timing, especially when you consider they were already setting the wheels in motion for Ahmed to feud with Blue Faarooq by the time he won that Battle Royal. Can’t figure out what they were cooking up with that one. It’s mad though. Just think how chaotic and unpredictable the WWF title picture was by early 97. You had Bret, Shawn, Taker and Sid all in the running, with Austin rapidly ascending and Vader still in and around the big matches. On any given week the belt could’ve ended up on any of that lot. But if not for injuries, you’d almost certainly have seen Big Ahmed thrown into that mix as well! Quote
davertfnewman Posted April 5 Posted April 5 There's a big factor that everyone also forgets from 1996 that couldn't have been overlooked in the world title picture if not for him going crazy and going home: the Ultimate Warrior. If Warrior sticks around, Sid isn't called back, and there's no way that Warrior comes back without the promise of a world title. I could see him defeating Vader for the championship OR Shawn in a babyface match. Quote

Also, when Vince reached out to Warrior again after Montreal in late 97, how would that have muddied things in 98? Obviously Austin was the guy by that point but you know Warrior was still gonna demand to steamroll him in 37 seconds. Baffles me where Vince even saw Warrior fitting in early Attitude Era WWF. Try to picture Warrior on the same roster as The Rock and knocking about on episodes of Raw featuring the Brawl For All? It’s mind boggling. Not that he’d have stuck around.
