This is the other cheat code to getting in early, if it's the sort of job you can get away with it in. A colleague was recently talking about someone who got into work around 7am every day, and I was the only person to ask, "how do you know? He might have got there five minutes before you did". It's up there with leaving a jacket on the back of your chair and fucking off home early, so if anyone comes to check it looks like you just popped out. Quote
deathrey Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Now I work from home, I'm always at work early. Though to be honest, I was mostly on time for work, especially when I worked in a school, I always aimed to be in 15 minutes early. My general time keeping for things like appointments is where I struggle but all the systems I've developed over the years for shit executive function are good. I always let people know and never take the piss. At most I will be 10 minutes late. Quote
Paid Members gmoney Posted March 18 Paid Members Posted March 18 I thought it had passed, but sadly my department at work are in a catastrophic phase of posting "funny AI" pictures in the Teams chat. They're a genuinely lovely bunch, so it pains me to see a wall of slop. Ho ho, so and so's a Liverpool fan, let's put an AI generated image of him in a Chelsea shirt. Oh he likes hula hoops, so put him swimming in them as well! Man I hate it. Quote
Members SuperBacon Posted March 18 Members Posted March 18 I left one of our Teams chats the other day as I'd just had enough of that sort of shit. When I was catching up with my manager she asked of everything was OK and I said "I just couldn't take anymore" and she went silent and then replied "...yeah fair enough" Quote
westlondonmist Posted March 25 Posted March 25 Work being bastards again. A huge contract re-let, told we'd all be part of the moderation. I got 1 question, the lowest in the team. The guy who asked not to be part of it got more. I'm fucked off. Feel like they've been excluding me from work stuff for a few months tbh. I would complain but the last time that happened I just got cornered by senior managers to stop it going further and they've announced a restructure. I've let my manager know that it's insulting but that's as far as it goes. It's probably not anything personal but I was essentially sold this job as being part of this. Quote
Paid Members BomberPat Posted March 26 Paid Members Posted March 26 we have one of the "monthly" big meetings today, where senior management stand up in a lecture theatre and deign to speak to the rest of us for once, then take questions but never really answer them, and it's always the same two or three pricks who ask questions, who'll take ten minutes to say the exact same thing they said last time that's no use to anyone. I say "monthly", because the last one was in January, and they ran out of time, so asked people to submit questions that they would answer over the next week or so. They finally put the answers to those questions online last week, and their response to mine doesn't address what I was actually asking about at all. This one is supposed to also be streamed online - I say supposed to, because it's only a couple of hours away and nobody has been told anything about how to access it, there's no link, no indication as to how it worked. My team have largely convinced themselves that it's going to be really important for us to be there, that there's going to be something announced that will be really important to us. There won't be, because senior management barely know we exist. It will be doom and gloom about how much debt we're in, and talk about how much they might have saved from academics going for voluntary severance this month, with maybe a wave of the hand towards the idea that there are other people working at this university, but usually in the context of talking about us to academics, not to us. Just a weird vibe all day. I can't be arsed with this meeting at all, so I'm holding out hope that there is a link to stream it, so I can just stick it on in the background and get on with my life, rather than wasting an hour or more sat listening to management bollocks. Quote
Paid Members BomberPat Posted March 27 Paid Members Posted March 27 Joke's on me, they sent an email around two hours before the meeting detailing how they're going to make enough cuts that staff costs go from 67% of the university's spend to 50%, and departments like mine will be first under the cosh from late April. Looking at 20-25% cuts across professional services. No idea yet how or if that will directly impact my team, but it will ruin the institution - we're a skeleton crew as it is, and there's no plan for any kind of new systems or infrastructure to make up for the fact that they'll be losing staff who actually keep things working. Absolutely horrible vibes all round. Quote
deathrey Posted March 27 Posted March 27 @BomberPatI'm sorry to hear that mate. We went through similar at work just before Christmas, a third of our workforce was made redundant. Whilst I am very grateful to still have a job, it has made it a pretty miserable place to work as those of us leftover no longer feel safe in our jobs. Our roles are also evolving in a bad way and there seems to be no real direction left of our service. I really feel like I need to get out but this job really supports my duties as a mum and I don't think I'll find anything else this flexible and feel stuck. It feels a bit futile to say I hope your situation fares better as the likeliness is that if you manage to retain your job, it will mean a lot more work for no more pay. I hope you do manage to keep your job if that's what you want. Quote

As I mentioned, my team are a lovely bunch, it's quite tight knit and people share funny stories and anecdotes in the main chat a fair amount. Someone now takes those stories and dumps them into an AI slurry generator and posts a completely shit comic strip based off of it. It's sapping my soul. Quote
DavidB6937 Posted April 9 Posted April 9 Someone I used to work with and I've kept in touch with keeps posting AI rubbish about her day on LinkedIn. Yeah, I know I shouldn't expect much better on there anyway BUT the amount of AI shite on there is absolutely horrendous. The graphics or the lazy 'written' posts which blatantly just ran through a fucking AI shite machine and spewed out some bullet points to really try and resonate with everyone. Oh fuck off. If you haven't got anything worth saying as yourself then maybe just don't say anything. Quote

Not to sound 7000 years old but that seems to be a running theme with people nower days. Everyone thinks their point is the most valid and important and that everyone needs to hear it because they are some undiscovered philosophical genius. Edited April 9 by deathrey Quote
Slapnut Posted April 14 Posted April 14 I'm having a real hard time with work at the moment. I'm pretty burnt out from the monotony of the work, the quiet periods, and the unnecessarily long office hours with absolutely no flexibility. But most importantly, I'm completely done being in a very small office surrounded by immature dickheads who can't shut the fuck up for longer than a minute. This basically summarises a 5 minute conversation that happened yesterday between two colleagues, one in his late twenties and the other in his early thirties: "What would you do if you just shit yourself in work?" "Hahaha I'd just go 'awww noo eew'" "Hahahaha just shit yourself, go on" "No haha" "67" "Hahahaha oh no I've 67'd myself" "Oh no I've shit and cum everywhere" There's been a tonne of mistakes from our team recently and we've been asked if there's anything we can think of that could be contributing to so many in a short space of time. I hate to be this person, but I told my manager that I'm getting particularly distracted by certain people constantly fucking about all day and this could also be a factor in other people's mistakes. He's aware, he literally sits in the same room as us, but obviously fuck all has been done about it. I don't know if I'm just being a miserable and unreasonable wanker but it just makes me absolutely hate work. I've never wanted to actually leave a job purely due to colleagues (management aside), but this could be the first. Quote

I don't think so no, there are few things more annoying than awful coworkers that make you miserable. They sound like absolute tossers. If its making you that sad and your manager isn't acting on it, is there anyone else you can raise it with? Sorry you're having a tough time brother. Quote
Paid Members BomberPat Posted April 14 Paid Members Posted April 14 really struggling to get back into the groove after the Easter break. Just don't give a shit about work at all. We should find out next week if we're on the chopping block for cuts, and even if we're not, so many other people we work with will be that it's just going to be a miserable time. Hard to get motivated to do anything under the circumstances. That's not even what I wanted to have a moan about. I've got into a "right, give yourself a kick up the arse, get something done in the next hour" mode, and working through some pay claims I need to process for guest speakers. There's a pretty simple process for this - the academic member of staff booking the speaker completes a form with the details of the booking, which populates a spreadsheet my team works off, and let us know whether we need to secure evidence that the guest speaker has the right to work in the UK, or if they will get that themselves. If the academic is getting the evidence, they're given a very simple guide as to what is required - if they're a UK resident, it's a copy of their passport with a signed declaration from the person who engaged them that the person in the photo is who turned up to give the lecture. Simple stuff. The academic who has submitted a load of claims in the last few days, no matter how many times this process has been explained to him, no matter how many times claims have been rejected because he hasn't filled in the form, hasn't provided the right evidence, or used claim forms that are years out of date and no longer accepted, still finds ways to fuck it up. And he always emails them directly to me, never to our shared inbox like he's supposed to, so I spend half my time dealing with this prick and it's not even visible to my manager or any of my colleagues. Every time, he sends just an insane mess of paperwork that isn't the one or two things I've asked him for. Unverified passports, driving licenses or random other bits of photo ID that are totally useless to me, or in one instance today, a Greek passport, which does absolutely nothing to prove somebody's right to work in the UK. It's like he's got the smallest bit of the job into his head, that he needs to provide supporting paperwork, but can't retain what that actually is. Quote

Something similar but not exactly the same, small office of about 8 people and 6 of them used to engage in quite a bit of office gossip and what i consider small minded negative chat. I would be perfectly civil but when the gossip would start i’d put my headphones on remove myself from the conversation. i’d literally put on ‘a deep focus’ thing on Spotify anytime they would start up chatting about anything i didn’t want to talk about. Over time they got the message and cut down on the talk, at least around me. Quote
