The Jorge Masvidal Discussion Thread

So I figured ol' Poundshop Tony Montana has finally reached that rare airspace in the sport that sees him worthy of his very own thread on the UKFF.

First off, who's next for him? Who do you want to see him face, and who do you think he'll face?

For me, i'd like to see him face Leon Edwards next. It looks like we're getting Usman vs Burns, and I wouldn't mind seeing Covington face Woodley next for his return from a loss. which leaves Edwards and Masvidal to settle their ridiculous backstage "beef" in the cage.

A win for Edwards puts him back in the spotlight, and a win for Masvidal throws him back into the mix.

Unfortunately, I think he'd knock the Edwards fight back. He clearly buys into his star power, which is ironic, because he's a guy who always used to say that he didn't buy into all that shite, and he was critical of fighters who carefully chose their opponents and tried to avoid certain "unfashionable" fighters.

I guess that's easy to do when you're one of the unfashionable fighters, but now that he's the Cuban McGregor he's changed his tune.

I think he'll end up facing McG or Nate again. At welterweight he's far too big and powerful for Diaz. McG would be an interesting fight if only to see two top level strikers duke it out.

I agree with this, but I don't think they'll do it (nor will Masvidal as you point out), because Edwards is definitely in the "who? why?" category these days. I feel like their backstage beef was ages ago and unfortunately for Edwards he's vanished within the UFC world while Masvidal has been given the spotlight. Nate Diaz/Karo Parisyan feels like more of a relevant beef than Edwards/Masvidal.

I think personally the rise of jorge has been fantastic to watch, it feels like the birth of a new Conor like superstar and i can't say enough how much that excites me in the sport i love so much. 

 

I think next it should be either Nate or the Conor fight Dana knows that is the mega bucks fight right now and i believe he will offer a truckload of cash to both men to make it happen.

I don't think the Edwards fight would benefit masvidal right now, it's way more beneficial for Edwards

Leaves the question of what to do with a guy in Edwards who's on an eight-fight streak and who's last loss was to Usman nearly five years ago. Edwards is ranked 3rd in the division, with only Covington and Burns above him.

Outside of Masvidal I don't know what else there is for him? Woodley is on a slide and doesn't deserve someone on the up, and Covington is probably going to knock back Edwards for the same reasons Masvidal would.

If Masvidal is being serious in actually wanting another title shot he'll have to go through a top contender at some point. That means Covington, Burns or Edwards.

It depends on if he wants to attempt to be the best or just wants to boost his bank balance/taking easier fights. If it's to fight the best and try to get another shot at the belt, you go through Edwards and another top contender, if it's for the cash/easier fighters to face, you go down the Diaz and McGregor route.

I'm sure Masvidal said he's not keen on the cut to 155lbs at this stage in his career. It's been a good five years since he moved up.

Yeah it really is criminal. The timing obviously was awful for his match against Woodley, but I'm not aware of why it turned into Woodley vs Burns back in May.

Think it was because the event was scrapped in London, and then re-arranged for the US when Edwards couldn't get into the country due to the pandemic. I could be wrong though, there was a lot going on back then with fights being cancelled and re-arranged.

Yeah I’m fairly sure that’s what it was Dave. That and Woodley still wanted to fight and because Burns is always up for jumping in and had been going back and forth with Woodley anyway on Twitter, it was the obvious choice.

Depends if the UFC match Conor with the winner of Khabib/Gaethje.

If not, then Masvidal will probably fight McGregor next. 

If so, then we will probably get Diaz vs Masvidal 2 - a fight I would have very little interest in.

I see Tony was interviewed on politics and current affairs. Not usually a good idea really. Some of his nuggets of info:

On Trump:
