Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted January 2, 2024 Paid Members Posted January 2, 2024 Halloween Ends deciding:- Spoiler Yeah, we'll fuck Michael Myers off into the background and make it about some brand new bland lad nobody will give the slightest shit about was certainly a choice. A terrible film. Quote
Awards Moderator Frankie Crisp Posted January 2, 2024 Author Awards Moderator Posted January 2, 2024 When Harry Met Sally Yeah, yeah. I know. I’ve banged on about it on here over the years. I ping pong between this and North By Northwest as my favourite film of all time and no doubt, when I watch the latter again I’ll turn towards it, but at the moment Harry and Sally wins it by a nose. It’s perfect. Billy Crystal steals the show as a miserable, nihilistic, sarcastic loser and Meg Ryan delivers the performance of her career with her facial expressions and reactions. Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby are the best supporting actors any film has ever had. I don’t think there’s ever been a film so perfectly shot, placed or written. The fact that we watched it on New Year’s Eve in the local Town Hall, on the beanbags which somehow absorbed my farts, made it all the better. You made a woman meow? Quote
Mr_Danger Posted January 2, 2024 Posted January 2, 2024 I remember buying it for my bemused ex as I exclaimed it was for her as I know she likes chick flicks. I took it in the divorce. Quote
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted January 2, 2024 Paid Members Posted January 2, 2024 Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Still one of Hollywood's greatest ever achievements on several levels. Has everything you could want from such a psychotically ambitious film - from one of the best short cartoons ever made to being one of the greatest neo-noirs. Ridiculous. Return to Oz I can't lie, the Wheelers would have scared the shit out of me if I'd seen it as a kid. Has a huge advantage over the original in that it chooses not to be a musical. Superb. Spies Like Us Amazingly unfunny piss. I hate Chevy Chase even in his good films. Dan Aykroyd shags Vanessa Angel. I hate this. Raising Arizona See the Funniest Films Ever thread. Midnight Run Why aren't you popular with the Chicago police department? Mannequin The 80s were a mistake. What the fuck was James Spader playing at here? Moving The Richard Pryor one. A lot funnier than I expected, and also a lot weirder. Features this amazing moment. Beverly Hills Cop Reminder that Netflix is doing a Beverly Hills Cop 4 and it's going to be shite and Eddie Murphy is already using up his Dolemite Is My Name good faith. This is still fucking brilliant though. Quote
Merzbow Posted January 2, 2024 Posted January 2, 2024 I have free Mubi again so watched How To Have Sex and while it's obviously not aimed at me it's such a well done and believable feeling film. Also, saw the weirdest little independant movie called Foxfur which was a total fucking fever dream about conspiracies, people in the worst/funniest fat suits and had someone playing David Icke working at a bookstore. Paid Members Hannibal Scorch Posted January 2, 2024 Paid Members Posted January 2, 2024 @Devon Malcolm I don’t know how you feel about YouTube documentaries, but I saw this really good one about the disaster that was the making of Who Framed Roger Rabbit and there was a lot I had no idea about Quote
Paid Members Hannibal Scorch Posted January 2, 2024 Paid Members Posted January 2, 2024 The Holdovers - No idea why this is getting a release in the arse end of January over here, but it’s a Christmas Classic already. Watched with my wife tonight (thanks Peacock) and it’s one of the best films of 2023. I’ll be shocked if we don’t see best actor, supporting actor and actress nominations come Oscar season. An absolute treat. Quote

The reveal with Angus’ dad hit very close to home with our own experience with my wife’s Dad. In fact they all had some sad issues, but there were plenty of laughs I felt to counter the melancholy. I hope it becomes a Christmas hit in years to come. Quote

Even more insane when you consider Disney and Warner Bros managed to get round a table and agree that their two main cartoon mascots share screen time. Seems less notable now but at this time? Like Sonic and Mario being in a game together. Oh. Saw Wonka tonight. I was brimming with glee. Just pure, silly happiness. And even if Tomothee Cholomee isn't quite right in the role the sheer flood of cameos and supporting cast washes it along. Can't wait to watch on a lurid technicolor Blu-ray transfer. Quote
Dr. Alan Grant Posted January 3, 2024 Posted January 3, 2024 Friday The 13th - the original. Holds up surprisingly well, with a nice Psycho-esque score and different villain than the norm. I’ve got the boxset to work through. I’m sure the sequels will get better and better as they go on. 4/5 Justice League Dark (first watch) - despite the appearance of Deadman, who I love, this was pretty bad. 2/5 Calvary (first watch) - devastating at times, oddly funny at others. Brendan Gleason is superb in this. And everything else he’s in. 4/5 Quote

Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted January 3, 2024 Paid Members Posted January 3, 2024 (edited) Godzilla: Minus One (cinema) As widely reported, an absolute gem. Plays the hits both with its story and its style but married it to some excellent characters, performances and notes on PSTD and post war trauma. All for just $15 million. You'd like to think Hollywood will learn from it but we know it won't. One of the best of 2023. Edited January 3, 2024 by Devon Malcolm Quote
