Who or what is ripe for censorship?

I was thinking yesterday about @PowerButchi favourite Another Rock 'n Roll Christmas.

It struck me that it, along with all of Gary Glitter's other records, have been struck more or less from public consciousness. You don't hear them in-store, on the radio, on TV, they're not on compilation albums and nowhere sells his records now.

Yet look at the example of Victor Salva.

https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/victor-salva-jeepers-creepers-3-director-paedophile-convicted-child-abuse-a7973676.html

Salva is still making movies, his films get theatrical and DVD and streaming releases, are sometimes shown on TV. Even the film, Clownhouse, which featured the then 12 year old actor he was convicted of having abused, is widely available despite actually featuring scenes that could constitute legitimate child abuse.

Why do we see one rule for one person and one rule for another when it comes to this sort of thing?

R Kelly

I mean, really, what the fuck is going on with all that shit?

21 counts of child porn - acquitted

Married 15 year old Aaliyah, but met her when she was 12.

Sex Tape & photos of him pissing on an underage girl - found not guilty.

Keeping girls locked up in a sex cult. He denies it.

Apparently intentionally passed an STD to his partner. He denies it.

There was s huge movement to for people to boycott his music. Spotify stated this year they will not promote his music anymore, but won’t censor him. Apple Music and Pandora also announced they will no longer ‘promote’ his music.

He then released a 19 minute song in the summer of this year called “I admit”.

Now either he has done none of the above, some of he above or all of the above. He went to court on some of the accusations and was found innocent. The whole thing fucking stinks.

Yeah but he released Trapped In The Closet so that kind of gets him a free pass for anything.

Which part? It was a bit shit from part 24 onwards.

Also, if we’re talking about songs that fit the thread criteria, how the fuck has Young Girl by Gary Puckett & the Union not been banned?

”Young girl, get out of my mind, my love for you is way out of line, you better run girl, you’re much too young girl”.

It was shit before that, but the first parts with Omar from The Wire were art.

Also, stop listening to this after the first verse and it's well paed.

@Kaz Hayashi I will be gutted if that goes because it's a fucking brilliant song.

That's not even the worst of the lyrics either.

"Beneath your perfume and your make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know that it's wrong to be
Alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes"

I'd be smashing my hard drive if I was Gary Puckett. Even the name sounds like someone in the local paper who's been discovered wanking round the back of the sheds at a nearby comprehensive.

It’s absolutely terrible. It’s hilarious, but terrible from start to finish. A lad up here put the full thing on as his DJ set at a bad taste night. He was dressed up as the world trade centre, strange night.

It’s not even disguised is it? Just fully out there, brass as fuck.

I’ll be honest, part 1 of the trilogy is more than enough for me. Is it about the girls development in to adulthood? Fucking hell, this is grim.

I had thought that Clownhouse was at least out of circulation.

I've got a really old copy of Clownhouse somewhere. Could never bring myself to watch it after hearing about what happened though...

Back to Glitter, Rock N Roll Part 2 still gets played at American sports events doesn't it? Their tolerance levels seem to be a bit different over there, or they are oblivious to who he is and what he's done.

Phil Spector-produced music seems to have a pass when it comes to censorship. Probably because they're under the names of the artists, and it'd be harsh for them to suffer for his crimes.

I remember them playing I'm the Leader of the Gang quite a lot during the beach volleyball at the Beijing Olympics as well, but again they probably didn't know who it was.

Spector is certainly a different case as well. Because of other artists involved, his crime tend to be passed over. I guess in a similar way to how Salva's films stay (mostly) in print, because it would be punishing those cast and crew involved.

Then again, there's the case of Kevin Spacey and the cancellation of Gore, yet Bilionaire Boys Club still got a release. It's all weirdly arbitrary but also complicated.
