Have split the documentary discussion out and think it would be best if other more abstract pontificating can also be kept in separate threads too. It was in a little church hall right up the arse end of Burnley. It was like a meeting, rather than a meet-up, but it was productive. There was a lady there who'd been heading up an organisation called Action for ASD, which was like an advocacy and support service which unfortunate;y had to wind down because funding for things relating to Autistic adults is practically non-existent. She was trying to explain what support she can offer to this new group (which rose from the ashes of the old group) and things we can do to possibly qualify to get some support and funding ourselves. It would probably have felt better if I hadn't been so busy the last couple of days. I think I was a little burned out. I've volunteered to help with organising public transport to places if people need it. Not booking taxis, but looking up bus and train times etc to get places, which it well within my wheelhouse. I've picked up some cool little fidget stuff as well. A Rubik's kaleidoscope foldy thing, a little Rubik's Cube fidget (They were reduced to a couple of quid each in The Entertainer) and something called a Tap Tap, which has got some little games on it. It'spretty fun and a good distraction. Quote

I printed off a little questionnaire and filled it out to show to him. He made it clear that it'd take time, but I explained that the more I know about what's going on the better a position I'm in to get support and work out how to deal with these things. Members SuperBacon Posted July 12, 2023 Members Posted July 12, 2023 I spent the day with a young autistic lad yesterday and it was one of the most fun days I've had in a long time. Firstly, he didn't know that we would have to put on PPE that other people had worn previously (neither did I and I don't handle things like that well!) and he was so far out of his comfort zone with it, but he coped incredibly well, and we spoke about the PPE as he was putting it on, to sort of take his mind off it. Then he found out I love films, and my manager mentioned I watch a lot of them. "How many?" "This year around 280 so far" "Can you please name and rank them all please?" And yes I can! They're all saved and rated on my phone! He loved that. Then he asked me my favourite directors and the top 5 films of all of them. Another top conversation. THEN he found out I support Spurs and listed all of the trophies we've won and the years we won them (this is where I could've punched him to be honest. Alright mate, don't rub it in) but this lead naturally on to my spreadsheet that I keep of Spurs players who have left and won trophies since 2008, which he thought was the funniest thing ever. I'm not formally trained on supporting neurodivergent people (is that the right term?), although it is something we are doing in the near future (even though its currently quite a small part of my job as there is another specialist team), but I suppose it just highlighted to me just how many things autistic people have to deal with day to day, whether that be a disruption to their routine or environment, unexpected things popping up or other, and how much strength and effort it takes to successfully deal with them. All in all its not been to bad to be honest, i got my son into routine quite quickly and tried to stick to it where possible. Biggest break though was when i asked him where he wanted to go. He uses his ipad goes to places and will select a place. However i had suggested we go for a walk. He not only went to the page but requested "outside" then "car" then "park" Being able to use sentences is very new. Quote

Its easier to see when it on the pad, each icon has a picture attached to it, It then forms a sentence in the top bar. So each icon would be in a block, you then press the block and it says it one after the other. Oh no, I totally understand what he was trying to ask, but my brain just first went "out, car park", as opposed to "out, car, Park." Things like this are great. I remember seeing Ken Bruce's son using one in that Chris Packham documentary. Quote
