Any mentions for Perfect Blue or Wings Of Honneamise yet?

I had a major anime phase just before I went to uni, and they used to show a lot of it on Channel 4 during 4Later and on Paramount before it became all comedy. I remember really enjoying Dominion Tank Police and Project A-Ko especially, but the two aforementioned films are absolutely amazing. Perfect Blue is incredibly good, espcially.

Oh shit! Stand Alone Complex is easily the best adaptation of Ghost In The Shell too, it even makes sense.

Bringing this back because I just watched the first episode of Megalo Box, it has this gorgeous old-school late 80's-esque animation and art style. It harks back to the glory days of "Manime" with it'

I wouldn't say it's similar but try Erased, there's also a live action series on there but the anime is the best of the two. STEINS;GATE is the closest you'll get to Psycho Pass and I'd look up Terror

Gladstone - I'm surprised you like anime, because you seem to have quite the downer on comic book movies. Is it just American superhero stuff you dislike?

It was really just a brief flirtation, like I say. I'm not sure I've watched an anime film since Spirited Away (which is excellent).

I'm not a comic book fan at all, and the constant stream of films irritates me immensely mainly because that's all that seems to be in Empire these days - I might as well just tear out Kim Newman's Video Dungeon and leave the rest in WH Smith.

I'd never really thought about it, though, I have to admit. Mind you, Perfect Blue and Wings Of Honneamise, which are probably my favourite anime films, feel like films that could easily have been shot live action, so I don't know if there is something to be said there.

The bath scene from Perfect Blue was used in Requiem For a Dream, Darren Aronofsky bought the entire remake rights just to make that one scene.

I just downloaded the original Bubblegum Crisis episodes, those days were so much better than all this "moe" and fan service crap i keep seeing today.

You know, I could have sworn that somebody really did a full live action version of Perfect Blue a few years back and it was supposed to be a load of bollocks. Can't find anything, though.

I did intend to buy a lot of the Bubblegum stuff back in the day but probably started spending all my money on CDs or something instead.

Anyone who mentioned Deathnote in this thread - wins.

When it comes to movie vs anime with deathnote both have their own pluses. The animes extra time to focus on the intricate details of the plot however is fantastic and it's deffinatly worth watching even if you've seen the live action movies.

Naruto, Bleach and Full Metal are also good watches.

See, that's part of the anime style these days that i can't stand too. I've tried giving each of them a try but i can't get into them what so ever (Bleach makes a good DS game though), it's all too ADHD for me.

Good work on findng the PB live action though, i may try watching it.

You'd sit well in my brothers company, he's gone full on with these two at the moment even going as far as getting a tattoo of Naruto Uzumaki. (I had to look that name up.) He's also started building a collection of stuff related to it too, no idea where he gets the money for it though.

The only Anime/Manga I've ever really had patience for is Guyver and Mad Bull 34, the latter being utterly lowbrow and stupid but I think that is why I liked it.

Anyone like the Highlander one?

Seen that a few years ago, I did like it, think it was by Madhouse that also did Ninja Scroll, the only thing I didn't like was the ending without ruining it supercena comes to mind.

Anyone else here seen Highschool of the Dead?

It could have been very good but the fan service is so bad I gave up after three episodes.

LOL this show is so OTT, after every episode I felt like having a wank, I might as well be watching porn, its a good job you quit because later on even the god damn zombies get fanservice.

Is Gundam worth getting into?

Absolutely, massive Gundam freak right here.

What you need to understand straight away is Gundam has (UC) Universal Century and then what people call (AU) Alternate Universe, UC shows are all connected in some way, and are the original main shows, the AU shows are not connected to UC or even other AU shows, they are their own standalone thing, apart from SEED, but you don't want to watch that ;)

If you think of it as like each Final Fantasy game is its own thing, set in its own world, but they're all called Final Fantasy but got nothing to do with each other that's what AU is.

As for what shows you should watch, the as mentioned Gundam Wing is a good one to start with, I watched that way back when it was on CN Toonami years ago as well.

Other shows, I would say Gundam X, this is easily my fav show out of the AU shows, theirs also G Gundam, you will either love this show or hate it.

If you want the original shows then its best viewing them like the starwars saga, I recommend you watch in this order;

Mobile suit Gundam (aka Gundam 0079) - The 3 movies, its the TV show made into 3 movies, its what is considered cannon now not the TV show.

Zeta Gundam the series not the movies, the movies have a slightly different ending and other changes, it loses impact, alot of Gundam fans consider Zeta Gundam the best Gundam show, it is certainly the empire strikes back of gundam shows.

Chars Counter Attack - this is the end of true gundam story, great movie, but you really need to watch those others before you watch this, has a great score as well, if you're into score music, most Gundams have great scores.

Their are other shows around in the UC universe, but the main core story is the ones I just mentioned.

Live action Gantz! Out next month.

Just don't compare it to the hardcore violent/sexual antics of the anime, this is only a 15 certificate afterall but hopefully it'll be a decent movie first of all.

You don't mean the first movie do you? Its just I DL'ed the 2nd one the other night, bit slow if the first is only just coming out here, Ive never watched the show, but I did like the first movie.

Since we are mentioning live action based on anime then I recommend the live version of Space Battleship Yamato, that was a great movie, if you're into sci fi movies then check it out, I thought it was much better than the latest Star Trek film(which I also liked), and its certainly become one of my fav sci fi films.

Trailer;

Great score to this as well.
