lightningxlock
I imagine there's atleast a handful of fans on here so it could be a good way to get into something new. Used to love this stuff when I was much younger - Guyver, Ninja Scroll, Akira, Fist of the North Star, Golgo 13 but i've rarely endeavoured to get back into it despite still enjoying it. Checked out Bleach afew years ago and whilst it was enjoyable, I found it abit kiddy-ish in parts. Also checked out Berzerk, which is an old one, and that was really good. Â So, who's into what? Are there any good modern day movies/shows that I should watch?
Majik
I'm quite the fan of DeathNote - and it's got some meat to it's bones, as far as number of episodes is concerned. It's not super modern animation, which I prefer too...
patiirc
To be honest other than Ghost in the Shell 2 and the Appleseed remake, Ive let modern anime pass us by a bit.  I dont know if its the super sleek production values or the obsession in seemingly making the animation as life like as possible thats off putting.  I like a variety of stuff, but if you havent see already Venus Wars, 3x3 eyes, Gunbuster, the Ranma 1/2 movies is a nice and varied start  EDit : Majik, how does the Deathnote anime compare to the live action stuff. as Ive liked the films even if some times they make very little sense with their 1 million and one plot twists Edited August 14, 2011 by patdfb
Paid Members FelatioLips Posted August 14, 2011 Paid Members Share Posted August 14, 2011 Huge fan of anything Studio Ghibli. Even some of their older stuff like Castle of Cagliostro holds up to this day. Reminds me I still have a few dvds to watch!
Cobra1000
My Neighbour Totoro is one of my absolute favourite films of all time, just magical. I've still got Kiki's Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke on my DVR to watch. Â Yeah mine too, that and Spirited Away are just flat out incredible. I honestly think a lot of Miyazakis films would be in my top 100 of all time. Love Kiki's Delivery Service and Prince Mononoke, Mononoke is a harder watch than most of the other Miyazaki films though. Â also Porco freaking Rosso. The english version is worth a watch too cause Michael Keaton is fantastic. Whipser of the Heart is another one of Ghiblis hidden gems. Although it isn't officially Ghibli Nausicaa is great too. Â Oh and everyone should watch The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Edited August 14, 2011 by Cobra1000
King Pitcos
Used to be a big fan of Urotsukidoji, but now I'm more into Shusaku. I've been trying to find Adventure Kid online, but it's a right bastard.
Merzbow
There isn't a dud in the Ghibli collection, only the Earthsea one is a tad less wonderous than the others. I'd say that Mononoke has the greatest story and is suprisingly VERY deep. Â If you want a series to follow then you can't go wrong with Neon Genesis Evangelion, it's up there with the best TV shows let alone Animes but can get a tad hard to follow near the end and if you watch the End of Evangelion movie too. cobystag
EDit : Majik, how does the Deathnote anime compare to the live action stuff. as Ive liked the films even if some times they make very little sense with their 1 million and one plot twists  I watched the Anime after watching the films and enjoyed it tremendously. The films do go their own way in some parts, so the anime might seem new to you if you're expecting the films to have been a shot for shot remake.  How some of the stuff happens in the film I preferred, but the anime does go longer and introduces some characters I would have loved to have seen in film.  I also enjoy Darker Than Black, that has a really cool story eventhough if it does suffer from some things that don't really translate well to the Western audience and come across as very kiddy in what should be an adult-orientated storyline. The second season wasn't as good as the first but still watchable.  Started watching the recent X-Men anime and I'm really liking it so far. Its like a re-imagining isn't it, very good. Looking forward to getting the second one on Blu Ray  Also Robotech and Cowboy Bebop are well worth watching too. Paid Members Halitosis Romantic Posted August 14, 2011 Paid Members Share Posted August 14, 2011 People bitch about Howls Moving Castle, and I can only condone that if they're diehard Diane Wynn Jones fans - apart from that, I think it's perfection, and is the only time I've ever been in a regular movie (not a premiere, or a festival) where there was an ovation at the end. ultimo the great
Before last year i'd only seen Spirited Away (which is excellent), Kiki's Delivery Service (average), Little Norse Prince (dull), Only Yesterday (good) and Ghost In The Shell ( ). Â Last year went through Satoshi Kon's back catalouge and Paprika and Tokyo Godfathers would be in my top 5 Anime, Paprika's astonishing and by some distance my favourite. Â As for more Ghibli also watched My Neighbor Totoro (ok, not sure why there's such a fuss around it), Porco Rosso (awesome), Ocean Waves (tedious), Pom Poko (nutso bunch of fun) and Grave of the Fireflies (beautiful ) Â I've tried a few series, Welcome to the N.H.K. and Paranoia Agent but still to finish them and so far haven't impressed. Â I switched Mind Game off due to it being fucking annoying. I'm wanting to go through the rest of Ghibli's films, see Kon's last film and Angel
