New Year Resolutions

So that time of year is approaching again. Everybody had indulged heavily at Christmas and may be feeling guilty about it and those things you haven't acheived in 2012 you will surely achieve in 2013.

Any resolutions or promises you are making about 2013?

I have a few:

1. Exercise. As I mentioned in the Comments... thread I am due to run 10k in May, which is probably a piddling amount to a lot of people but is a big deal for me. Also I want muscles. Big muscles.

2. I cut down heavily on the amount I drink in 2012. I would like to cut it out entirely for 2013. I'm getting to old for it, my body hates me after a heavy one and I get memory issues even after a couple of drinks. It's time for that to end.

3. My drug use was also way down in 2012. I think I did some coke on a handful of occasions, smoked weed about once, did K once and, if it even counts, some nitrous once. I would like to have a drug free 2013.

4. Read more. I spent most of 2011 reading but in 2012 I have read maybe two books.

5. Deal with my debts.

6. Write more. I was supposed to re-drafted somebodys script a month ago and I have done about five pages so far.

7. Quit smoking!

I will proabably think of more.

Right then.

I actually did quite decently with 2012's resolutions, which were:

1. Phone up my old saxophone teacher and book some refresher lessons to get me back into it. - Did this, still going with it now. I very, very rarely play outside of the lessons, but playing once a week's better than not at all.

2. Relating to (1), find some other people who play music and play music with them - FAILED.

3. Perform the Charles II rap from Horrible Histories on a stage - did this at a panto dress rehearsal (my character was Squire Trelawney from Treasure Island so I had the look as well). This was the very-small-achievable resolution.

4. Set up a savings account / money pot and put some money into it every week in order to save for a holiday in 2013. - Did this, just put some more in today, in fact.

5. Find a flat or house or something somewhere (money pending). - Did this about a month ago. Money still pending, still not 100% sure what I'll do when the six-month lease is up in May/June. May call it a write-off and continue to save up for a couple more years to get somewhere nice with the g/f in 2015, but will have to see.

6. Work for Pixar. - I have this one every year just in case.

This year's are going to be...

1. Make sure the g/f is happy - the cheesy sentimental one.

2. Continue the weekly holiday saving. - I'll be doing this, resolution or not, but the (money pending) of Resolution 5 from last year may mean less goes in per week than in 2012.

3. Swim - the g/f is very keen on swimming and ridiculously good. One day I might be 3% as good as her but I've put this on because it's a form of exercise I enjoy, it's something I think I can get into the routine of doing a few times a week, and it's something I can share with her. It can't do me any harm, and I'd definitely pick swim over gym. It's quite fun, too.

4. Find some way to stop me stressing as much - I'm quite bad for letting tiny little problems get to me, resulting in spiralling stress, or jealousy, or worry, about things that don't warrant it. If I can find a method or technique to stop this happening it will be brilliant.

5. Visit the Tower of London, Italy, Paris and the Lake District - this is the 'no matter what else happens, I'll complete this resolution' resolution. Tower of London's happening in January (I've never been), Paris in June (SPRINGSTEEN), we're hopefully booking Italy this afternoon for July, and the Lake District is TBC but will hopefully happen. If it doesn't, I'm dropping it from the resolutions!

6. Work for Pixar. - I said it was every year.

If I can achieve three of the six, I'll be happy. Four would be brilliant. Five, ideal. And if number 6 happens, jackpot.

Interesting resolutions there from Riot. I'd be very interested in seeing if they stick as that sounds like a life transformation and in a good way.

People knock New Years Resolutions but goal setting is a fantastic thing that everybody should do. Sure, why leave it just to New Year, that's true but I like to reflect on the year past personally, how far i've come, grown and progressed, what I've achieved and what I haven't that I intended to and looking to rectify it. I think it's a great exercise if you actually have serious intentions. Seriously, goal setting all the fucking way.

2012 was a very good year in many ways and I'm going into 2013 positive with plenty of goals i'm looking to achieve.

Ive got a few this year, all of which are very achievable

1. Quit Smoking again- It's too expensive, and could use the cash for number 2

2. Go on Holiday- Use the cash from 1 to go somewhere, anywhere, for a week. Not had a proper holiday in around 17 years or longer

3. Finish my book- It will be rubbish, but at least can say have done it

4. Swimming- Stamina is still to shit, need to get some fitness up

5. Finish off the Kitchen/Spare Room- Make the house a home and have a proper bed again

6. Get financially sorted- It's coming if I stay in work. and start saving with point 1 should be solvent ish by the end of feb

7. Road Trip somewhere- Driving is going well, be a challenge to drive somewhere longer now back into the swing of things

8. Start and finish things- This is rather than starting with good intentions and giving up when bored of them

9. Play drums in front of some people- Im not good, but it would be another off the bucket list

Yup, sounds like it's achievable

1. Don't kill anyone.

2. If I happen to kill someone don't get caught and go to prison. I don't think I'll like the diet.

3. Lose weight, but only if this process doesn't contradict with the aim of the first resolution.

4. Stop smoking.

5. Start smoking so that I can stop smoking.

6. Come up with better resolutions for 2014.

My 2012 was a year of 2 halves and is ending on a fairly low note.

With that in mind i'm setting myself a very generic (specifics are not important at this point) and dull resolution: to start enjoying myself again and to end 2013 in much better shape than I started it.

I'm embarrassed that i'm having to have counselling over something as trivial as a relationship breakdown, so i'm going to knock that on the head and start having some fun. I'm going to get a hobby and play a sport, i'm going to spend a lot more time in New Zealand with my family, i'm going to go to Beijing as often as I can and spend time with my best friend without crying every ten minutes.

Most importantly, i'm going to do it all for me.

Edit - and not kill anyone, obviously.

I've got a few, all of which are only achievable if I get off my arse and do it rather than using the 'I'm too busy with work' line. Now that my job has changed, I'm actually getting my evenings back so I really have no excuse:

1. Get in shape. I started running a couple of months ago; it was only 2-3 miles a night to start off with but as I was starting to go further distances without looking like I'd been raped by a panther, I messed up my left ankle and haven't been able to get it right to start again. Once it's back to normal, I'm going to resume the running and will continue to push myself so I can go further and further. The main aim is to get my number of chins down to single figures and reduce the gut so I don't have to breathe in to use a revolving door.

2. Linked to the above, I've agreed to do the Great North Run in September. I'm seeing this as the real motivation to follow through on number 1, as I've agreed to do it for charity so I don't want to be the shithouse who lets people down even if it's just for the sake of a couple of hundred quid.

3. Learn to play the guitar to a basic level. I signed up to a course which starts in March so that's hopefully going to happen and once I buy a guitar I would be a bit of an idiot to not do it. But being an idiot in general, there's no guarantee that it'll happen.

4. Re-learn to speak Spanish; again, just to a basic standard. I love the language and spoke it relatively fluently in my teenage years but really want to improve so I can do something other than ask where the library is.

5. Have more self-confidence. I have embarrassingly low confidence when it comes to myself and especially the ladyfolk hence why I tend to be perenially single. I do my mates' heads in as they know I really like a particular girl but I don't have the confidence to do anything about it as I can't for one second imagine her saying yes. So instead of moaning about it I'm going to be more confident, even if it's just a facade, so I can at least try to talk to girls without accidentally covering them in spit or discussing de-icer. Both of those recently happened, by the way. Sob.

6. Punch my sister's boyfriend. Simply because I can't punch her.

I always have ideas of what I want to do, and never seem to follow through.

I suppose my main one would be to have more self confidence to believe in myself and push myself towards doing those things. I think that's what has always held me back - fear of failure and whatnot. It's a bit stupid really, but I like to think I'm not the only one that feels that way. They say it's better to try and fail than not try at all, or something.

This year I got engaged. We now have a house together. So I can't be that useless, right? Who knows.

Anyway yes, I'd really like to be able to finally jump over that fucking hurdle I feel I've been stuck at for the past 20 odd years or something.

As i'm going travelling in March, my resolutions relate to that.

1 Scuba Dive at the Great Barrier Reef

2 Learn to Surf (at a beginners level)

3 Keep a diary or blog of my trip

4 Perform a skydive

5 Be more confident when talking to others

I'm keeping it simple and giving up drink for the first 6 months of the year. Like the OP, I've cut down a fair bit over the last year or so, but I'm enjoying the feeling of being drunk and especially the hangovers less and less now. I've gone with the 6 month timeframe because it seems a more manageable goal than just saying I'm quitting altogether, plus I'm going to Denmark in July and I want to have that option of cutting loose while I'm on holiday. I'm halfway hoping, though, that I get so used to the feeling of not drinking on a night out and the fitness gains in the first part of the year that I have no inclination to go back to it.

I never really put anything like this down in writing because if I fail then no-one really knows about it. However, my two main goals for 2013 include:

1. Continue with my weight loss. I'm 32lbs down and will be stepping up the exercise in the new year. I haven't decided on the gym, swimming or both yet though. I'd love to be able to do my 3rd marathon maybe in 2014.

2. Get a new job and stop working so many hours in the meantime. I always work late with no extra pay because, despite promises, they won't expand the team I manage. So will be giving job hunting some more attention in the New Year.

A few other things include:

Go home to Wales more often.

Socialise more.

Save more money (difficult given I want to socialise more).

That's about it really. My ideal goal would be to be a size 14/16 by this time next year but I don't want to put more pressure on myself on this one so I'm just going with the above for now.
