RedTwoster Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Watching that show live must have been brutal - not because of the match quality (most of the wrestling was good) but because of the length of time between matches. Presumably it was to fit ad breaks in for those on the ad-funded tier of Netflix or wherever the show airs in the States, but my goodness the amount of fast-forwarding I had to do. There were some good matches to watch, especially Liv/Iyo, but the effort of the wrestlers was undercut by the structure of the show. This was not a viewer-first experience. I hope Aldis gets a proper run as a wrestler though. He looked great, and if he keeps Oasis as his theme song, all the better. Quote
Paid Members Supremo Posted August 2 Paid Members Posted August 2 (edited) Disappointing show. Considering Saturday was the far superior lineup, that doesn’t bode well for tonight. Same as Wrestlemania, it felt like the actual wrestling was an annoyance they had to rush through and get out of the way so they can get back to running adverts and showing celebrities. Even the fucking chairs in the Hell in a Cell match had sponsors on them! Fine, acceptable opener. What a bonkers statistic they opted to say out loud though, mentioning that Liv hasn’t defended the belt since winning it at Wrestlemania. Over one hundred days! Jack Tunney is spinning in his grave. God bless Wade Barrett afterwards, saying fans will be talking about that match for years to come. I won’t even remember it by Monday. Fun six-man tag. I fully expected Solo Sikoa to swerve everyone and re-join The Bloodline, so I’m ecstatic to see they’re seemingly going with him as a proper babyface. There’s real potential there. He’s the funniest man on the roster. A solo babyface run (pun intended) could be the making of him. This was the first time you could really see Rikishi in him. Genuine feel good moment when he got a hug from LA Knight at the end. I’m bang up for them becoming an odd couple Tag Team. I long for the vignette when Solo and Knight are at the club and Solo whips out a few pairs of these bad boys! Buzzing for Nick Aldis. He must be extremely well liked backstage to get WWE to fork out proper money to get Oasis for his entrance. It felt a bit rushed and short (gotta get back to those ads!), but it was still a good match with Gunther. It’s funny; Aldis has always been bang average in the ring, but when so much of the roster is filled with Performance Centre graduates all doing the same thing and wrestling exactly the same, it’s enough for me to develop a whole new appreciation for anyone who moves or does stuff a bit differently. Nick looked good here. His punches in particular looked great! Passable six woman tag. Ever since Paige returned, the obvious direction appeared to be the Bellas turning on her, only for AJ Lee to return as Paige’s back-up in a Bella Twins vs. Team Emo/Goth tag. The match itself would likely be shit, but it’d at least be nice and classy for the women to have their big nostalgia match. Seeing the finish here, that is likely the plan, but now it’s Brie Bella’s turn to seemingly injure herself, so God knows if they’ll ever actually get to it. Maybe Wrestlemania? Cody vs. Punk was a crushing disappointment. Clunky and messy to begin with, it got good by the end, but only in that patterned, predictable WWE main event way. Even down to the bog standard ref-bump-run-in finish. This wasn’t a patch on Punk vs. Roman, where it felt like a truly great match had somehow snuck in and broke out on a WWE show. Considering this was their break-glass-in-case-of-emergency match, it’s super depressing that all I’ll remember it for is Cody somehow making his ridiculous mask even more ridiculous. Never change, you preposterous man. Everything about the Main Event can get in the bin. What a waste of time. As much as I’ve hated Brock returning, trading wins with Oba, and then completely undermining the King of the Ring stipulation, I still assumed the match itself would deliver. Brock in what’s likely his retirement match, in his hometown, with the effort they put into reestablishing the Hell in a Cell gimmick with Punk and Drew, and now announced as closing the show? I had the highest hopes. Double juice? Crazy stunt? Nope. The same boring finisher spamming bollocks we always get from Brock. Did they incorporate the Cell even once? Absolute shite. Most annoyingly has been fans complimenting the post-match nonsense, talking about how Brock, “truly passed the torch,” and proved, “how much he likes and respects Oba.” Oh, fuck off. If he truly does respect Oba and truly wanted to pass the torch and make him the next big thing then he should have fucked off after Wrestlemania and never came back. Nothing that’s happened since has achieved anything that wasn’t already achieved in their first match. All it’s done is cooled Oba, muddled his booking and turned his run into just another patterned WWE trilogy. One of the three ideas Triple H has. Most boring booker alive. On the subject of Hunter, isn’t it funny that the moment the Vince McMahon lawsuit goes into private arbitration the post-show, self-congratulatory Press Conferences return? I’m sure there’s no connection there whatsoever. What a cowardly, cynical prick. On the plus side, at least he looks absolutely fucking knackered. Probably down to his final few Horcruxes. So yeah; thumbs down overall. They’ll need a miracle to bring it back with Night Two, especially considering the dreadful lineup. I still suspect Oba Femi beats Roman for the World Title in an impromptu match to close the weekend (ESPN Moment of the Night!), but wouldn’t be shocked at all if Roman just wins clean and then to finally mog Seth one more time Seth turns the Shield Chair into the Shield Throne for Roman to sit on.
