Wrestling: The Music

I’m sure there’s a wrestling music thread on here somewhere, but nothing came up in the search. I wanted to post something as it’s 20 years since WWE Wreckless Intent came out.

I won a copy, I think on the old Talk Wrestling Online forum. I absolutely loved the album and it was one of the better reviewed wrestling albums. Highlights included Silkk the Shocker’s MVP theme and Three 6 Mafia’s Mark Henry banger.

I also had a pirated download of the album. I’m not sure why when I owned the CD. It had a ‘bonus’ nu metal track called “How Long” that claimed to be the One Night Stand theme music and definitely wasn’t. It doesn’t seem to exist anywhere online now.

Anyone else a fan of this album? Or have any other wrestling music musings?

It’s quite sad how much a fan of wrestling theme songs I was. WWF The Music Vol 5 was the first CD I bought and WWE was my top artist on Spotify a couple of years running (back when WWE Uncaged albums dropped every couple of months).

I was more of a WWF Aggression kid, I clearly remember pirating awful quality RealMedia files before everyone was using MP3. It came out at the exact time I was getting in to hip-hop too so I was all over this.

Aggression is an album I still listen to sometimes. Our 6th Form Common Room was two rooms - the cool room and the losers/main room. I once made it into the cool room and there was a copy next to their CD player, in amongst every Green Day album. It became a must buy. 

Discovered some great rappers through Agression and there's some really good songs on there - Kool Keith & ODB's Mankind track and Tha Eastsidaz's Kane song. The last 3 songs on the album are a great run of tracks too.

Forceable Entry as awful as that title is, some bangers on there. Raven's theme with lyrics. Matt's V1 theme. Benoits theme. Which is now okay to like because the band play it now again.

This is the one I played over and over on my Discman. RVD's one, Lita's, even the Triple H Drowning Pool version and the Disturbed Stone Cold theme. 

I've just looked it up on Wikipedia and it's not the tracklist I remember which makes me wonder if the UK got a slightly different album than America. I definitely can't recall Limp Bizkit being on there.

The Gangrel theme from Aggression is both hilarious and a wee bit dodge with it's hook line 'I won't stop, till I see blood (blurrrrd)'

Yeah, I quite liked Forcible Entry at the time. RVD's full theme was a bit of a banger. Is the Lita on that one with the opening line that sounds like "she's like a lost flower, throwing up through her cock?" American vocals making lyrics sound misheard

Wreckless Intent has "With Legs Like That" that was meant for Stacy Keibler but they bunged it off to Maria. Good tune, I like that.

However, are any of them The Wrestling Album II: Piledriver? I think not.

I only remember it for Rikishi singing a "Jeremy's sex music playlist" song on it.

Originals must have the worst opening track of any album ever. Bubba Ray and D-Von trying to do a rap song. Yet, I could probably still sing along most of the lyrics.

Loved the Master P WCW tune (HOOOODY HOOOOO!) even though absolutely everything else about it was shit.

I like to think he rinsed Bischoff for his "run" as why not?

Since we are talking songs and albums rather than theme tunes, nothing but love for this slice of early 90s eurotrash with the likes of Otto Wanz, PN News, Shinya Hashimoto, Masa Chono, Giant Haystacks, possibly Big Sky/Nitron and Papa Shango/Godfather there too

I don't think I ever owned Aggression, as it came out just a few months before I got properly back into wrestling and I imagine had basically sunk by the time I was in - I don't recall ever seeing it in HMV or anything, and I mostly associate it with Wrestlemania 2000. I know "time seemed to move quicker then" is as tired an observation as they get, but Wrestlemania 2000 to Summerslam 2000 may as well have been a lifetime as far as I was concerned.

I think I probably owned WWF The Music Vol. 5 - it was right at the time when I would have bought absolutely anything and everything wrestling related I could get my hands on, and was starting to figure out my own music tastes. I know my best mate at the time definitely owned it, and we'd use it for entrance music when mucking about at wrestling. I definitely owned WWE Anthology and, again, remember that being predominantly used to soundtrack our efforts at Royal Rumbles when it was mostly a bunch of mates clobbering each other and figuring out who was prepared to take a Piledriver, while the only athletic one of us was hitting Swanton Bombs off of furniture. 

I had Forceable Entry, and that fell around the time I was starting to get into a lot more heavy metal stuff outside of what just played on Kerrang!, and realising that most nu-metal stuff was shite. Looking at the tracklisting now, I can't remember the majority of the songs on there, and 2002 already feels pretty late in terms of cultural relevance to be leaning on some of the dregs of the genre like Saliva, Creed and Sevendust. I will admit to having a soft spot for Monster Magnet, though, so Matt Hardy's theme is one of the few I still remember.

 

One that hasn't been mentioned is this:

I owned this, with the cover above, which differs from the more famous US release (which had a photo of The Sandman on the cover), and has a different tracklisting. 

ECW-wise, this had a couple of Harry Slash & The Slashtones originals, and then some covers of the more famous entrance themes - Kilgore covering Walk for RVD, Bruce Dickinson covering The Scorpions' The Zoo, Motorhead doing Enter Sandman, and so on.

But, presumably either for copyright reasons or because some of the wrestlers had left the company by the time of the European release, we got a different tracklisting to the US. So where they got Grinspoon covering Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck for Justin Credible, a cover of Big Balls, and Sabu's theme, we got the (as far as I can tell) completely un-ECW related inclusion of Freedom by Cathedral, Prayer of Hatred by Morbid Angel, and Supagorgonizer by Iron Monkey. So while the wrestling fan side of me might have felt a bit put out by getting these random songs I couldn't relate to any particular wrestler, the metal fan in me was discovering some new bands and enjoying them thoroughly. It's probably the least embarrassing "wrestling entrance themes" album you could ever be caught listening to.


These days, I have a few wrestling records in my collection. I have Tiger Mask's theme on picture disc, on which the B-side is the man himself performing Can't Help Falling In Love With You -

I only ever had WWE Anthology. I don't remember anything about it though, other than it having the excellent 'I'll Be Your Hero' Lex Express tune.

Genuinely one of my favourite wrestling-related songs ever, what a banger.

The European release was done by Earache, who Cathedral, Morbid Angel and Iron Monkey were signed to at the time. Good way to sneak in some advertising for your bands.

That's the tracklist I had minus Kane's theme that seems to be pegged on the end here unless I'm forgetting it. The Rob Zombie track wasn't Edge's theme but a shitty remix. Luckily I got this album, Rob Zombie's Sinister Urge and Come Clean by Puddle of Mudd all for the same birthday or Christmas so I was set for Nu Metal
