The build for all of them has been pretty piss poor except for MJF/Darby which they've done a fucking brilliant job with, fair play to them. I’d maybe have ditched one or two matches regardless just to up the pace a bit more, but that’s a minor complaint. Takeshita/Okada was my match of the show, hands down. And that’s saying a lot as there were a number of matches that I really loved on this card and I don’t give a crap about the International title. I was gripped throughout, and that has to be Okada’s best match since joining AEW. It was tremendous. Darby/MJF was also excellent, and on reflection, having Max win was the right result. MJF/Ospreay at All In is the right match to give that show a sales boost. Kevin Knight turning was 100% the right decision and makes all his insincere promos - intentional or not - seem logical now. I’m glad to see Thekla retain, but the big story for me was the mediocre reaction for Statlander, given that she was being played up as the hometown hero. They need to turn her, she was doing well as a heel and this babyface run has been weak. FTR/ C&C was a lot of fun despite the dumb spot with Christian’s arm (I think? I can’t remember, maybe it was Edge) being put through a cinder block which was then repeatedly hit with a chair. How would that cause pain for anything outside of the chair?? I enjoyed the match though, and I’m still hoping for C&C/FTR/Bucks in a ladder or TLC match at All In. Mox and O’Reilly have good chemistry, but I hate anything and everything involving The Conglomeration. Despite him mistakenly saying ‘we have a new champion’, it was nice to see Jim Ross back. Given that he’s been tested for dementia, mistakes like that are totally excusable. I hope he doesn’t have that illness, and that any confusion he’s dealing with in day-to-day life can be explained as something less cruel. Swerve/Bandido was great, but it suffered a bit from being predictable - Ospreay/Swerve seems like the obvious final given their prior relationship. The Stadium Stampede, complete with its dumb bus murder, wasn’t for me. I imagine as many people loved it as hated it, so I can’t say it was a bad idea but it wasn’t for me. The ‘food fight’ bit was very WWE so I’d probably not have done that if I were them. Another very enjoyable AEW PPV, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. They might not be running a huge number of hot angles, but every show is a lot of fun right now, and I’m really enjoying what they’re doing. EDIT: One major negative I forgot to mention - the stream on MyAEW was abysmal. It froze several times throughout the show, forcing me to exit the stream and go back into it for the show to restart. She’s Scottish and wrestles for ICW and EVE. I can’t pretend to have seen much of her, so I can’t comment on how good she is in ring. Foley will have almost certainly worked with her on the Inside the Ropes live shows he did, she’s been involved with Kenny McIntosh and co; so he may know her personally. Ultimately, I’m not going to knock him for giving a platform to a Scottish wrestler, I’m just that damn biased. I thought the interaction between Foley, MJF and Darby on the pre-show was really good. He’s still an excellent promo and I’m looking forward to seeing how they use him going forward. Quote
