Terrible finishes

This might fall under the 'so bad it is good' category. In 1998, we saw before they were cool, Too Much feuding with Al Snow. 

Right out of the Russo Booking 101 Manual, 'Too Sexy' Brian Christopher and 'Too Hot' Scott Taylor were booked in a tag team match with Al Snow and Head, with Jerry Lawler as the impartial guest referee at King of the Ring. 

The finish saw Jerry Lawler throw a bottle to Christopher (no relation, obviously), who attached the said bottle to the mannequin head and pinned it, which turned out to be a bottle of Head & Shoulders shampoo! 

This match went nearly 10 minutes...

I saw that recently, I think it was on one of the latest Botchamania's and it's not quite as bad as I remember. Obviously not anything like it should have been but my memory was of it looking like Gillberg's entrance and it's much better than that. At least the level of Goldberg's entrance.

The 18 second match/finish of Bryan's Mania title defense vs Sheamus. I know it ultimately went on to help establish Bryan as the underdog everyone loves and WWE claim that was always their intention. But I always struggled to believe that because (a) Vince was still in charge back then and he had zero attention span and (b) WWE were clearly irked that Bryan kept on managing to get himself over, no matter what shite they gave him to do or say.

I actually didn't mind this. Bryan was playing a terrific prick heel at the time and him losing in that fashion was a great comeuppance for the character. And iirc they had a really good match the next PPV to make up for it.

That Bryan run also includes the moment where Brie told him she loved him, and he replied with 'and I... appreciate that'. What a dickhead!

Shane McMahon vs The Miz at Wrestlemania where Shane pinned Miz after Miz supelexed him off a huge scaffold onto a crash mat but Shane sort of landed on The Miz so got the 3 count.

The opening match on the Mr Perfect compilation WWE Vault put up has got a rank finish. It's Hennig vs. Bockwinkel from Chrismas Day 1986 for the AWA Title. It's a typical finish of the time, Hennig has the match won, ref taps him on the shoulders, he celebrates like a chump and it's explained that he's been DQ'd for a throw over the top rope. Audible "bullshit" chants. Most of these "Dusty" type finishes are terrible and this one isn't as bad as the old "blood stoppage" but it's still a shit finish.

I remember this. I didn't particularly care at the time; it was effectively a comedy match and 1998 WWF was full of useless filler like this on PPVs (Dustin Runnels v Val Venis, Bradshaw v Jeff Jarrett, Marc Mero v Droz, etc). Looking back on it now, definately one for the So Bad it's Good category and the joke is very much in keeping with Lawler's usual schtick.

So bear with me on this one….

The ending to Rock vs Hogan Wrestlemania X8. The match, the crowd, the winner I think was a brilliant spectacle. What I didn’t like was the ending (technically post match I know) where Hall and Nash come out and berate Hogan, start beating on him and then Rock saves him. It felt like it was premature from Hall and Nash and could have been saved for the next night on RAW. Plus it felt like an extra bit added on that really wasn’t needed, doesn’t add anything and felt a bit half thought out (which it may well have been if an audible).

How about the triple threat WCW tag title match between Sting and Lugar vs Harlem Heat vs Steiners.

 

Where even though there's 20 police officers in the ring, 2 outsiders with bats out of the ring. But the ref still counts a roll up for Harlem Heat wins the belts.

That reminds me, wasn’t there a three way tag match involving the New Age Outlaws where they both got tagged in to fight each other, so one just let the other pin him and that won them the match? Even though technically the Outlaws did both the pinning and being pinned so there’s just as much a case that they lost the match. Just goofy, convoluted bollocks in the days when everything had to be a shock or a swerve.

Actually it might’ve been a Nash and Hall three way tag in WCW. Or maybe both WWF and WCW did it. Either way it was stupid.

It was the outlaws vs LOD vs DOA. Billy pinned Road Dogg. To the point that in a triple threat match at survivor series there was a rule in that match that partner can't pin partner.

Knew I hadn’t imagined it. I’m almost certain there was a Nash and Hall match where they did the same. Maybe when they were doing those triple threats with the Nasty Boys and Meng and Barbarian.
