Mic skills is always an interesting point to bring up because yes they are important but also not necessarily. It's all about what the performer/character requires. Because I would say Bandido doesn't need to be a good promo like say Rey Mysterio or Jeff Hardy don't need to be good promos. Sometimes ring skill and physical charisma and presence are more than enough to make you one of the greats.

I'm not sure that can be used as a legit thing to be honest, when he's consistently had great matches over the last few years, and has taken to it really quickly and adapted to it so well.

Just because his journey into wrestling was different than others, doesn't mean he's any less "real" as a wrestler.

I mean, Logan Paul is obviously shite but what's your gripe with the others? 

It's Hangman for me too, I barely watch wrestling any more and he's the only one who makes me want to tune in almost every time he wrestles (not even he could make me watch an MJF match, so there's still room for growth).

Mic skills are something which, again, comes down to personal choice. In American wrestling, mic skills have (historically) always been an important factor in the success of a wrestler whether it is WWE, or territories like Memphis, yet in Japan, for instance, this was never as important. It was more the physical charisma of the wrestler and match quality that mattered. 

Match quality is also variable - some people prefer all action and loads of high spots, others prefer character based matches or a wrestler that they emotionally connect with. Atsushi Onita was never the greatest bell-to-bell wrestler but people connected with him and he was hugely over as a result. I'm sure some people would prefer to watch the drama and selling of an Onita match than an all action high spot match with no emotional investment that the likes of, say, Ricochet does. Does that make Onita the better wrestler because he could emotionally engage the crowd more than someone like Ricochet (as an example)?

It's what matters to you and how you define what makes a great wrestler.

Judging Logan Paul as a real wrestler is where his entire act crumbles.

As a celebrity wrestler, he’s probably the best of all time. As a regular full-timer, he’s the most boring, uninspiring, transparent worker in the business today. There’s absolutely nothing to him and he’s completely hit his ceiling. The parable of Ronda Rousey. Become judged as a full-timer, with the novelty removed, and the whole thing turns to shit.

All he’s got is that one, rubbish, “YOU PEOPLE,” heel promo, where he lists his accomplishments, and that one tired, patterned, celebrity-style match where you can see all the wires. And then he’ll inevitably release a YouTube video showing you the wires in the days that follow. Here is a clip of me practicing this spot for months. Cheers, you whopper. Really helps suspend the disbelief.

There’s no-one in WWE or AEW less engaging. He never does anything that surprises or subverts. There’s no particular drama or excitement. It’s just the same thing he rehearsed with Shawn Michaels every single time. Hit the marks. Remember the sequence. Rinse and repeat. Fucker can’t even think of any new or interesting spots involving his phone or drone! And considering his main attribute is his athleticism, it’s extremely telling that the match he had with Ricochet was one of the most disappointing matches of Ricochet’s career.

I would throw him in the same murky area as someone like Shane McMahon. Yes he's had wrestling matches but I don’t think he's a proper wrestler. 

But why a thread about who the best wrestler in the world is has turned into a Logan bloody Paul discussion is beyond me.

Anyone from Japan or Mexico who fits the criteria?

His doesn’t have the promos (honestly, I think once you notice him taking the huge gasps of air between sentences you can never come back from it), and his character tightropes above ultra-cringe, but between the ropes, Darby Allin is a good shout.

This past Wednesday confirmed it. He’s a guaranteed great match almost every time. Wild chemistry with everyone. I’d have no problem with him having that style of Mike Awesome vs. Spike Dudley match every week whilst they’re at the ECW Arena. Remember the rippers he had with Takeshita?

Does the arena still have that balcony? Surely he’s got to dive off that?

I think for me personally with the downfall of New Japan there isn't that one person I would deem best in the world.

I remember two interviews from Powerslam in the late 1990s. One with Chris Jericho and the other, a short time later, with Lance Storm.
In both, the interview turned to who both men considered to be the best wrestler. Jericho said The Rock. Lance said Fit Finlay. Two diametrically opposed wrestlers, stylistically.

Lance scoffed at the idea The Rock could be considered the best. He said that he and Jericho "clearly had different ideas of what makes a good wrestler". He contended that Finlay was the best wrestler he had ever worked and could get over anywhere - Europe, Japan, America. He pointed out that if The Rock went to the MMA-influenced (at the time) New Japan and ultra stiff All Japan he would get laughed out of the building and thus, this disqualified him from being the best.

It's an interesting criteria but one that could hold merit - a wrestler that could get over anywhere could surely be thought of as "the best". Obviously wrestling is much different now than it was 25+ years ago. Stylistically, it is much more homogenised and the distinct cultural/regional forms of pro wrestling that used to exist generally don't anymore - but it's still something to think about I reckon.

Jushin Liger famously said Eddie Guerrero was the best. Considering Eddie got over huge in Mexico and America and Japan it is hard to argue.

If we are talking the current crop using the old, distinctly diverse styles then, yes, that disqualifies Logan Paul. Page would have struggled in lucha I think (although I'm sure someone could make a reasonable argument that he wouldn't) and I cant see Will getting over in the old British/European style (not that he has had a chance to, in fairness) so maybe that leaves someone like Zack Sabre Jr? He has a cocky arrogance to him, he would definitely got over in the old British/European style (as that is essentially his style) and those fellas always did well in Japan. He could have held his own in territories America but maybe would not have thrived in WWF due to his size.

Anyway, just thinking out loud. Interesting question.

What's the thinking behind Page struggling to get over in lucha? He can speak the language decently and from my understanding they've always loved a big lad who can brawl and bleed.

I'm not sure that Ospreay wouldn't be over in an older British style promotion either. World of Sport had its own more athletic competitors that we remember fondly, and he's calmed down his style a lot more in recent years.
