An aside but if you’re reading this and haven't seen the Ricochet vs Mark Briscoe Stretcher match (or any post WWE heel Ricochet) you should absolutely seek it out. It's a masterful performance from Ricochet. He starts off as a snivelling pathetic butt of the joke cowardly heel and manages to convincingly transition throughout the match to a sadistic, brutal and cruel psychopath. Well worth watching.

I’d never have believed he had it in him, but a pretty strong case could be made for him being the best heel in wrestling right now. He’s proved so many people wrong, including his old employer - so good on him. I hope he gets his due in the UKFF Awards this year.

There's a place for celebrity wrestling matches but to me it should be more Zayn/Knoxville and Mayweather/Big Show than some guy going toe to toe with Roman Reigns. But that's just me.

I completely agree with this. Despite being in the "behind the curtain" era it's slightly absurd that someone in Paul's position is even lasting 5 minutes with stars who've dominated for the past 10 - 20 years. They routinely acknowledge his lack of Wrestling background and experience, and despite his capabilities he doesnt have an impressive athletic background. At some point in the near future we're going to see him "taking Gunther to the limit", and its nonsense. 

 

They clearly see him as an asset who adds value, and id expect they've asked themselves how best they're going to use him. The story seems to be "we know we've had countless celebrities try this over the years, but this guys so committed and gifted that he can get to the top on merit". The issue, as others have pointed out is that after a certain point he stops being an attraction and becomes another part time wrestler that happens to be independently wealthy and has their own platform. I'd have leaned much more heavily into the "massive cheat who occasionally does spectacular things" routine. They"ve done it to an extent with his goons getting involved and the brass knuckles, but not nearly enough for my liking and its often accompanied by how impressively quickly hes reached the same level as guys who've been doing this all their lives. If he is cheating, he's doing it to get a slight edge in an otherwise closely fought and even contest. He should be cheating for his very survival in the business and to avoid being crushed, instead we're not a million miles away from the suggestion that he'd probably get on even better if he wasn't so badly motivated.

Absolutely. If basing on in-ring alone I would comfortably say Darby Allin is easily one of the best in the world. He's definitely the best at selling. He doesn't have bad matches ever and brings way more realism, struggle and drama to his matches than pretty much anyone I can think of.

AEW is lucky to have a small group of guys who just seem almost incapable of having bad matches, it's astonishing - Allin, Orange Cassidy, Mark Briscoe, Hangman etc.
