Turns out the original quote had nothing to do with wrestling, and that it dates back to the 1880s in discussions of religion, and is wrongly attributed to about a dozen people in that field too. Yeh, I'd heard it attributed back even further to either Blaise Pascal or René Descartes, but that's probably wrong too. It's also shown at the start of the film 'The Song of Bernadette', a 1940s movie about Our Lady of Lourdes, which was nominated for a bunch of Oscars and won a few - it was a pretty big deal amongst Catholics for a while (enough that we were shown it in school 40 years later). I'd guess that's where it wandered into the wrestling business from. Quote
