Given an incredibly storied career, his biggest setback through modern eyes was probably that Terry Funk was his brother and you're just not going to win there are you. Him and Terry in 70's/80's AJPW are great stuff to watch, incredibly over and mad crowd heat. Quote

I think he's probably talked about more if his brother isn't just about the best ever. They were an incredible tag team. Super fun, dirty bastards for the most part. Good in Japan... and everywhere else. You'd be hard-pressed to find many other wrestlers so respected and so recognised as great. There's barely a HOF he's not in and a territory he didn't hold gold. Just four tough Gaijins beating the fuck out of each other. When it comes to wrestlers from this era, he always seems to be forgotten about or underrated. More than “just good in Japan”. He was great everywhere. But AJPW is where you’ll see the best of Dory. Quote

Weirdly my first exposure to him was in Pro Wrestling Illustrated (it may have been Inside Wrestling) when they covered the Funks feuding with the Public Enemy in ECW. They had a story about TPE traveling to the Double Cross ranch and spray painting the Funk’s horses…. I thought two things, 1. That Spray-paint looks fake. 2. Why are they doing that to that old man. Paid Members BomberPat Posted August 5 Paid Members Posted August 5 (edited) Dory Funk Jr was so good that it's yet another indicator of just how good Terry was that he was able to get out of Dory's shadow, and be a massive star in his own right and not just Dory's little brother, with Dory having already been good enough to get out of the shadow of being Dory Sr's son. He never had the complete career reinvention and resurgence that Terry had, but he never really went away either. It was always very funny to me that people would always make jokes about Terry Funk being an old man who never stopped wrestling, when his older brother was still working. That he lacked Terry's capacity for reinvention meant that he largely settled into the role of elder statesman and "legend", and stayed there for the better part of thirty years, but he still had capacity to do good stuff - he popped up all the time in AJPW, had a great match with Jeff Jarrett at Dory's promotion in the early days of NWA:TNA, and I'm a big fan of the weird worked shoot storyline and match he had with Dan Severn in 1997. And the big exploding ring gimmick match a couple of years ago was a shambles, and he had no business getting in the ring at all at that age, but what a phenomenal bit of nonsense to settle your career with - his first tour of Japan was for the JWA, so long ago that he was wrestling Giant Baba and Antonio Inoki when they were still a tag team, his final match there was 55 years later and he was getting hit with an electrified exploding baseball bat. Bonkers. Insane list of people he had a hand in training too - because his school was the WWF's training school of choice in the late '90s, pretty much anyone who debuted in the Attitude Era came through there; the Hardys, Edge & Christian, and Kurt Angle all came through his school, but years before that he had a hand in training Stan Hansen, Ted DiBiase, Jumbo Tsuruta, Genichiro Tenryu, and all of the Four Pillars of AJPW. Most of all, though, just watch the AJPW tag stuff with the Funks against Abdullah and The Sheik. Some of the best wrestling ever caught on tape. Edited August 5 by BomberPat Quote

Spent about 23 hours a day on twitter, would search people’s opinions and argue with them/put them down, even harass people and do his whole “um actually” bit. Said it was funny the Aurora theatre shootings happened and Americans deserve mass shootings. Would regularly be racist about black people and double down and not apologise. Also wanted Jimmy Rave to prove he had his arm amputated as he didn’t believe him. But the likes of Benno, Ian and other BritWres fans are all praising him because he was nice to them and made them laugh. A bit more of an extreme Lance Storm tribute. I didn’t like him if you couldn’t tell. He was a wanker. YMMV. Quote
