That Star Trek thread somebody was talking about

Chief O'Brien is the absolute man anyway, so these scenarios are easy to imagine him in. He's such a fantastic everyman. A series based around him could have been brilliant, and because of how down to Earth he is nobody would have batted an eyelid at him dropping casual "F bombs" all over the place.

Colm Meaney's one of those actors that whenever I see him in something I automatically assume he's playing O'Brien. Takes me ages to come around.

I couldn't get into Hell On Wheels after I began seeing it as one of O'Brien's fucking holodeck stories.  I kept expecting Dr Bashir to turn up.

Discovery is definitely getting better.  I completely agree with Carbomb on the last page that they've just fucked around with Star Trek history too much, particularly in relation to the Klingons.

It's an issue entirely of their own making as someone else commented - they could simply have made a new series set after Voyager and done whatever they wanted.  It's almost as if they chose a scenario most likely to cause issues.

Speaking of other series... I was hoping for some cameos.  Archer could conceivably still be alive, and T'Pol almost certainly would be.  Again, choosing to set the series in between two others would seem suited for showing older Enterprise guys or younger TOS characters (as they've done already with that trader chappie).

It's not helping that The Orville is in many ways a better Star Trek series despite the hit and miss comedy.  The look, music, episodical nature, retro Roddenberry positivity is all bang on.

Yes, @Loki! My man. The Orville has been a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine as TV snobs seem to hate it. This week's episode was great and the first episode where they've finally got the balance between humour and drama and story right. I mean, there were barely any joke jokes in this episode but when they did have humorous moments or lines, they fit right in. Whereas in previous episodes, those moments didn't quite land.

Oh, boy. If this was /r/StarTrek we would be getting flamed for daring to mention The Orville in a Trek discussion because it's NOT TREK!!!!! Except, it really kinda is. It's a 21st century, weekly episodic sci-fi show that's like a mix between TNG and VOY but also still it's own thing. Honestly people, especially if you're a Star Trek fan and pine for that 90s/00s style of Trek, give it a chance. At least the first, say, four episodes.

I've been meaning to watch The Orville for some time; there's just so much to watch, I hadn't got round to it. But it does sound great.

The latest episode... What a cracker!

How do you do spoilers again?

Old school plot (it is an identical setup to TNG's Cause and Effect) but quickly assumes you know the score and gets on with exploring it. Excellent turn by Rainn Wilson, and good fun all round. Lots of character development too while they get busy with the sci-fi.

On a side note, was kinda odd watching Anthony Rapp after this morning's news.

I thought this week's episode was really good. A nice little bottle show and it felt quite a lot lighter than some of the other episodes. Discovery's really improving and becoming more "Star Trekky" as it keeps finding its feet.

Yes, great episode. Proper Trek.

I really, really want more time spent on the bridge. I want to find out more about that android crew member, as well.

Rapp was on After Trek this week and seemed very relaxed and in a good mood. What Spacey allegedly did was fucked up but it seems Rapp himself isn't letting it get him down. Rumours about Spacey have abounded since forever. I remember hearing in school about him getting some male PA to give him oral in his trailer on some movie or another, and I was a 12 year old child with no connections to Hollywood whatsoever. Wouldn't be surprised to hear lots more stuff about Spacey come out and hopefully Bryan Singer gets nailed, too, given all he has supposed to have done. Anyway, sorry, off topic.

I don't like the way Spacey's tried to deflect the attention away from the harassment by coming out. I had a similar response to the claims as I did when it all came out about Stuart Hall. You don't expect it, but maybe it was just naivete. Anyway. It was a very Trek episode. Apparently we get a season break in two weeks. That means we have 4 episodes after the break until the end of season one? Bit of a strange way of doing it.

Yeah, mid-season break. It's something quite a lot of US TV shows do, but given Discovery only airs on a streaming service, it's a bit odd. I read it also has to do with how long each episode of Discovery spends in post-production (a very long time, apparently.) The up side is that you'd imagine the mid-season finale will be a big episode, perhaps a cliffhanger.

Completely missed who Mudd was in previous episodes, started r ewatching the original series a few days ago and it clicked. Really enjoyed this weeks episode too. People are right about the design and tech mostly. A  few things still niggle me but the transporter having a physical slide I thought was a cool nod to the older ships.

Does it not air on CBS in the States? Thought they were the ones developing it initially, but not sure if that's still the case.
