I'm one of those people who gave up on the American Office after an episode or two. I'm a huge fan of the Office, and Ricky Gervais in general, so was a bit apprehensive about watching the US version whatsoever.

But i've been reading this thread almost open mouthed. I honestly don't know if i'm missing something here, but I had to double take on the posters that rated the American version as better, to ensure they weren't from America. British TV shows, as a general rule, don't translate well to their audience because they like their humour less subtle, and more in your face (massive stereotype here, but you get the gist). I hate most American sitcoms for this very reason, so the Gervais original is untouchable in my book.

You can't really say if it's better or not if you've only seen the first couple of episodes (which were rereuns of the British series).

I think the American Office is better, but it's running out of steam a little bit now.

I recently got hold of seasons four and five from the US and despite a few things am still enjoying them both. I dont want to go into too much detail to avoid spoiling things for people, but there is a storyline with Jan that develops in the very last episode of season 4 that I dont care for, and just found ridiculous, whilst there is something happening with Pam at the start of season 5 that is also pretty blah. Plenty of laugh out loud moments, and I really enjoyed the character of Ryan in season four. The arrival of Holly was great aswell, although I have an inkling from what I have watched of season five, that I wont be seeing much more of her.

I think this is about the safest thread for this as I know you've all been talking about the 10th season or whatever elsewhere on the forum  but as a heads up for determined saddos like me still at UK pace with this wonderful show it returns for the 5th season tomorrow night on Comedy Central at 10pm. They've overtaken ITV4 who have yet to show it (no idea if they will) Comedy Central have shown 4 and 5 virtually back to back. I only saw 4 earlier this year so i'm glad i'm seeing 5 fairly quickly. Looking forward to it.

im happy to say ive got a bunch of people into this who were always wary that it was a mere rip-off and that gervais is a supreme god, i like the uk one but carrell really adds great sympathetic depth to the boss-character whereas gervais always seemed like a complete cunt at times. jim and pam isnt as good as tim and dawn, but it beats the uk one in mostly every other way, apart from the innovation of the uk series. as a straight up us comedy, its one of the best of the last 10-15 years, up there tho maybe not suprassing arrested development; the way things link up from past eps and the smallest of nuances get me every time i rewatch eps which im in the process of doing with some office noobs.

oh and andy bernard is just pure brilliance.

any fave moments for anyone in particular, maybe fave eps? for me, has to be Phylis' Wedding, Niagra Falls, Booze Cruise, Health and Safety, Dinner Party, Casino Night (jim telling pam how he feels is just heart-in-your-mouth stuff) and the Travelling Salesman/The Return double ep. in fact, s2 and s3 are pretty much perfect seasons of comedy.

not sure if it should continue longer than this season, maybe no longer than season 8 if they decide another one must or can be done. thing is it still tickles me, even if hit-or-miss at times, like this season has started abit meh, and yet i loved the latest ep with andys play...im conflicted.

Some of the episodes have made me cry my eyes out, if the Niagra Falls episode mentioned by dharmabear is the one i'm thinking of then thats prob the biggest one of them, and any show that gets me that emotionaly involved is a sign of a hit in my book. Its a perfect combination of quality writing and casting/acting that not many shows get as perfect as the US Office has. I'd say the US is better then UK, if you ditch series 1 that was a poor almost word-for-word reworking.

I'd pick the Dinner Party, and Niagra Falls for 2 of the first that spring to mind as being the best.

Some other season/show finale's have done it to me (Prison Break, Numb3rs and 24 of all things come to mind), but not to the level the Office has.

I uesd to think Dwight was the best thing about it, but the Nard-Dog is now one of the funniest characters in any TV series. US or UK. Period.

Just thought I'd bump this with some thoughts as us non-downloaders watching at UK TV pace are slowly but surely catching up with you  The 8th episode of Season 6 has just been shown on Comedy Central and the last two have been great.

I'm probably enjoying this series more than 5 so far. I wasn't a massive fan of the Michael Scott Paper Company story so that didn't help, not sure why but it just didn't seem right.

Last night's episode Koi Pond was brilliant I thought. I laughed out loud at Creed's "Who's your worm guy?" for some reason. I'm not someone that worries about shows changing and evolving as long as I still enjoy them, but it did feel like an older episode, not to say that newer ones are bad, just different directions at times.

EDIT - Actually looking back at the epsiodes the first half or so of season 5 was very good, I forgot about them as season 5 had a few months gap on Comedy Central for some reason.
