it's not in the UFC's MO to reschedule, they'll always try and keep the show rolling. I was really up for the Tsarukyan fight but i'm ok with this too. It sounds like they gave Makhachev the option and he just went with it.

Yeah like I said, I know why they’ve gone this route and I definitely get why Makhachev would wanna stay on the card. It’s just way less appealing to me than if we got the Tsarukyan fight pushed back a bit.

Shite for Beneil Dariush as well. Coming off back-to-back first round losses and a year on the shelf, 35 years old, goes through a whole training camp for this Moicano fight only to get the rug pulled out from under him at the eleventh hour. Dana’s saying they’ll “take care of him” but, still, a really crappy situation for him. Especially at this stage in his career.

I wonder why the UFC didn't have back-up fighters ready to weigh-in? that's what the usual routine is these days.

What in the actual shit.

When you believed the UFC and run of terrible luck with main events and fights falling apart with barely any time to replace 2025 steps in immediately to show it can get worse.

Absolutely unreal absolutely no disrespect to moicano but this has now become so almost definite Islam will tear through him with absolute ease

Changed my mind between Merab and Umar.

Yeah I wasn’t sure who I favoured for the longest time, I was about 50/50. But the way Merab’s seemed so gotten to seemingly just by Umar existing and his initial reluctance to even do the fight is giving me major doubts. I’m not sure he fancies it and the way he was talking when the fight was announced, it sounded like he was kind of pressured into taking the fight. Then there’s been talk this week that he’s carrying a leg injury. Then just the fact that I get the feeling Umar’s the real deal.

I don’t know, maybe Merab proves us all wrong and goes out and looks incredible but I’m feeling a title change.

It's not ideal that Arman pulled out, but if someone from the main event has to pull out, it's always better when it's the challenger. Thank god it's not Arman vs Moicano for the the interim title heading this show.

Like Wand says, the co main is kind of 50/50 but the fact Merab was so scared to take the fight in the first place makes me think he is doubting his own ability so I think Umar has the edge here.

Yeah the new main isn’t as good but fair play to Islam for taking the fight. Would be very easy for him to pull out but I think beating Monica on short notice will help his legacy.  Short notice fights always look good (provide they win!). Still an interesting fight but if it’s nothing serious of much rather they’d reschedule it for a few months down the line but hey ho.

Meant to post this the other day. Dan and Veronica Hardy predictions podcast;

Always enjoy these. Not a huge fan of Dan’s commentary but this is more where his strength lies for me. Veronica being there helps as well, for her own input plus she brings out a different and less serious side of Dan who can be a tad dry sometimes.

Obviously the Makhachev vs Tsarukyan talk on there is redundant now but whatever.

Alright! New year and I'm back on this MMA thing. Hope you guys are all well, it's been a minute.

Just finishing watching UFC 311. Local time just a bit after midnight, so I won't make a massive post but I'm also not as tired as I usually would be. It's school holidays over here in Australia (I'm a teacher), and I didn't set an alarm, leading me to wake up at 11:30 Sunday morning.

Actually, I missed the early prelims. I'll have to go back to watch Ailin Perez twerking. Ah well. Maybe tomorrow.

First takeaway from the main event is how important game plans are. And training camps, but specifically in this case, game plans because Moicano was already in shape, ready for a high level fight in this division, on this card. But he had no answer at all for Makhachev's skill set. If he had game planned specifically for the champ and trained extensively for that skill set, would it have made a difference? All the credit in the world to Makhachev for handling a fighter of Moicano's caliber with such ease though.

Second takeaway from the main event was Jon Anik IMMEDIATELY screaming as soon as the finish happened- "THE MOST DECORATED LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION OF ALL TIME!" I was going to debate this point- it kinda feels like UFC try and hype every current champ as the greatest ever, but in looking into it... Makhachev has the most consecutive title defences ever at 155, which is a hell of a stat. And May will mark 10 years in the UFC. I'd have had your BJ Penns and Frankie Edgars up there in the greatest/most decorated conversation, for multiple title wins, crossing divisions etc, but you really can't deny Makhachev at this point.

The co-main between Dvalishvili and Nurmagomedov was an awesome fight. Well deserved FOTN. Dvalishvili's gas tank does not stop, and his pace and smile was constant for 25 minutes. Umar was game but the champ did seem a level ahead, though the challenger was competitive early.

Enjoyed seeing Jamahal Hill get sparked. That was a fun, wild fight that on another night might've got the bonus nod.

Almeida and Spivac did heavyweight things. Good while it lasted. I am enjoying the fact that UFC heavyweights largely seem to be better athletes than some of years past.

Damn, Kevin Holland really has little answer for the ground game, huh?

-------------------------------

Enjoyable card all in all. The Intuit Dome is a gorgeous venue. Between this UFC card and the Raw debut on Netflix, it looks like a state of the art beauty, great place for big events when the venue itself can add a sense of occasion.
