Santa Esmeralda's version of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood is a banger. If this is half as good as that it'll be well worth a listen.

Have that on 7 inch, remember buying it alongside Genya Ravan's disco version of Feel The Need in Me (very unessential).

I love that version of Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood. Popped like a complete idiot when it turned up in the first Kill Bill movie when I saw it at the cinema back in the day.

I’m coming up on two years of collecting, and after being all “I’ll just buy a few of my absolute favourite albums”, I can categorically say that I haven’t stuck to that one iota. But having said that, everything I have is something that I wanted.

Our crap ION All-in-One record player gave up the ghost so despite it “not fitting the aesthetic” I convinced my wife to get a proper record player as the replacement. Ended up going with the Audio Technica LP60-XBT which was a little pricey in comparison, and bringing my speakers from my little PS1 CD Player project down until we find some nice bluetooth ones. Took all of 10 seconds before she conceded how much better it sounds.

Probably forgot a few since my last post in this thread but over that time we’ve picked up a few new records:

Wu Tang Clan - Enter The Wu Tang (36 Chambers)
Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory
Buddy Holly - True Love Ways
Buddy Holly (some sort of greatest hits one)
Ennio Morricone - Music from Fistful of Dollars and A Few Dollars More
Paramore - Riot
Paramore - After Laughter
Stornoway - Beyonder
Paul McCartney - Boys from Dungeon Lane
Jamiroquai - High Times (Best of Singles)
The Beatles - Rubber Soul 2026 Remaster
Captain Sensible - Women and Captains First

A few of them were expensive HMV deals which were close to online prices but with the convenience of having them. A few were flea market bargains and a few from a local record shop. The money saved on some of them (Ennio Morricone for £1 from the flea market instead of £15 from the record shop) meant most of it evened out. Still an expensive do though.

I won’t go on about all of them but I will say Paul McCartney’s new one is a cracker. Really enjoying that, especially the opening track “As You Lie There”. Sadly my new sealed copy was still somehow scratched and skips on one of the tracks so I’m returning it for a swap.

I love the AT-LP 60, it’s so easy to set up and is just a workhorse. The first one I had was a Bluetooth model (previous generation to yours I think, @FLips) I bought refurbished/shop return on eBay. I gave that to my youngest daughter to start her off enjoying playing records when I bought my second AT-LP 60, a non-Bluetooth model with a red chassis I imported from Japan (new on eBay), which I only wanted because it kind of matches my red Technics receiver and speakers.

I also got the bluetooth version of that when I started record collecting, it a great little player, lot of nice features.

Got my niece a turntable for her 18th birthday and went with the same Audio Technica bluetooth model.

Speakers I got were these: Edifier R1280DBs - comes with a remote and can control bass and treble through them. Can also connect them wired & Bluetooth.

Look quite snazzy and sounded pretty good for a £250 all in turntable setup.

The homey @gmoney sorted me out with one when my eldest wanted a table, and it went well for a good while. We had to get her a new one about a year ago, as it was broken in a house move (my ex asked me where I bought it to try and get it replaced under guarantee and I had to explain I bought it off a wrestling forum 😆) and it's really good. Same brand, different model.

She now has just over 100 vinyl and has learnt the art of the charity shop.

Got a nice record shop near me. First it was a smallish shop inside a lifestyle centre which housed trinkets and odds and ends. It wasn't very big but I found so many records in there which I was discovering online and trying to find physical copies. The building got bought by developers, bulldozed and houses built on it. The record shop had to find a new home and luckily there was space in a local garden centre. They started off with one room, then they took over the room next door. Then they took the larger space on next to that.

Now they've got over 200,000 records, 25,000 CDs and now tapes as well. The majority are used but started to do a few new ones. They've got their own area just for Beatles records. The other day they counted up 104 copies of Rubber Soul in store.

Last year, Financial Times put out the top 15 Record Shops around the world. And somehow it got on the list. They appeared on one of those BBC celebrity antiques shows, where Phil Daniels & Leslie Ash visited.

If you keep walking through there's also a comic book, action figure shop. They've got quite an extensive collection of WWF, WCW & PWI magazines.

Last week while browsing vinyl at the town market, an interesting older chap beckoned me with “like your vinyl do you?”. Very much the anorak type, carrier bag of unknown goods in hand.

He recommended a record shop in the town over, then quizzed me on random stuff, which I’ll repeat to you as you all love a quiz.

”What’s the most covered Beatles song?” I answered

Spoiler

Yesterday

Which he said was correct. Then he asked the link between John Lennon and Gary Lineker which I never got after a few weak guesses.

Spoiler

Both their middle names are Winston

Anyway I made an effort this morning to walk roughly 45 minutes to this record shop he recommended and fair play to the lad this was a class little place. I raved to them how they had a Jazz Fusion section and eventually walked out with two Weather Report albums (their debut self titled album and Night Passage) and two Devo albums (Oh No! It’s Devo! and Freedom of Choice) for £55 all in all.
Had to leave a few albums behind I was undecided about as I didn’t want to spend too much this month. Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill and Devo’s Shout might get picked up next month if they’re still there. Definitely worth the trek.

When buying used Records I’ve started to try and pick up either first pressings or as close to first pressings as I can reasonably afford where possible.
This week I’ve managed to pick up first pressings of-

Living Colour - Vivid
Kraftwerk - The Man Machine
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz
Judas Priest - Sin After Sin

Ive been down to London a few times year and had the chance to take in a couple of more specialised record stores too-
All Ages Records, which specialises in Punk & Hardcore is a fantastic little place with really friendly knowledgeable staff too and their prices are really good too, well worth a visit. I picked up the new Chat Pile album ‘Who Loves The Sun’ as well as Aick of it All’s ‘Live in a World Full of Hate’.
Raven Records, which is more a straight up Metal shop was also pretty decent, although the people who owned it didn’t seem to want to interact as much as the folk at All Ages. I had visited this place a couple of years ago but I think it had only just opened so the selection was a little sparse back then. They’ve expanded a bit since and I’d still say it’s worth checking out. Picked up Winterfylleth’s ‘The Unyielding Season’ from here, which has been one of my favourite albums this year so was glad to pick it up at last.
Both shops are in the Camden area (about 10 minutes walk between eachother) and worth visiting.
Im off to London again next week and will be checking out Crypt of the Wizard over in Hackney. Much more of an underground black metal vibe to that place it would seem so I’m not expecting to pick up a whole lot from there as I’m not really one for taking random chances on something I’ve never heard before, but we’ll see what happens
