Paid Members Hannibal Scorch Posted September 1, 2021 Paid Members Share Posted September 1, 2021 Thanks Devon. Had never heard of her before, but listened to a few other songs of her and just bought her greatest hits.

Topper Headon originally wrote it about his girlfriend but Strummer changed the lyrics to ones he’d been working on after jamming with a violin playing mate. I thought it was about the music ban in Iran.

I thought it was about the music ban in Iran. Well, it's a tricky one: Taha gave them a recording of his work in 1981, and a few months later they released Casbah. He said in interviews that he reckoned that's what they based it on; in itself, that wouldn't mean much, but they never denied it, and even had him on their tours with them, so it's probably partially true at least. In all honesty, I was just being a bit click-baity with that line, but there is a kernel of truth to it.
Keith Houchen
Nah, not having that. As much as I hate Strummer and would love to have everything of his discredited, Taha is blowing smoke up his own arse there.
Paid Members Carbomb Posted October 16, 2021 Author Paid Members Share Posted October 16, 2021 What's Strummer done? I haven't read up on him so much, but I was under the impression he was one of the good guys, socialist and all that. As to Taha, maybe - like I say, was being a bit click-baity, but I also recognise one of my biases at play in this, i.e. that I was more inclined to believe an ethnic minority artist was under-appreciated and under-acknowledged for his influence on a major white act.
