Was struck down with Covid last week and had plenty of time to kill, so downloaded GTA III on mobile. Completed the fucker 100% in four days.

Some observations from my holiday in Liberty City -

- This mobile port is fantastic. The graphics are a marked improvement on early ports of the game (the characters have fingers!), no issues with loading time, draw distance, etc. Absolutely nothing has been left out - it's the complete experience.

- The aiming/camera is slightly fiddly compared to a console, but perfectly acceptable once you get used to it. It's a bugger for some of the tricker rampages using weapons like the M16, rocket launcher and sniper, but again, perfectly acceptable once you get used to it.

- Despite that, the rampages are slightly more forgiving in this version in terms of the number of enemies that spawn at the various locations, making hitting the respective targets a bit easier and requiring less re-loading or moving to the second spot where the icon moves to following a failed attempt.

- One that will arouse fellow import/export specialist @Devon Malcolm - the garages are far easier to complete in this port. For the first garage in Portland with the industrial vehicles, previously rare finds like Securicars, Flatbeds, Buses etc can often be found amongst the general vehicle populous in the game - they spawn far more regularly and means you can complete them far quicker. I completed the Shoreside garage in virtually record time, nabbing the majority of them on the doorstep of the garage itself. Driving the Dodo from the airport to Portland remains tedious. And I still can't fly it.

- I failed during Paramedic mission attempts on levels 11 and 12, a form of mental torture I can't even begin to fully articulate.

- The Off-Road challenges still aren't much fun. It took me several goes to beat Patriot Playground, Ride in the Park, Multi-story Mayhem and the dreaded 'Gripped'. The latter of which is an absolute cunt in this port, as many of the tree textures are much more detailed, reducing visibility.

- The story to me doesn't hold up as well as the other GTAs - the Mafia-heavy intro ends with a bit of a whimper, and the Yakuza/Cartel business afterwards isn't as engaging as I remember.

- However, it was still tremendous fun to play through the game again and revisit all the old haunts. This is probably the last time I'll ever have a good excuse/relevant free time to dedicate to playing one of these again and nailing the 100% marker.

- If anyone's interested in playing it again and going for the 100%, I highly recommend this excellent walkthrough guide that's been on GameFAQs for many years now. Essentially, it guides you through the entire proceedings and the suggested order. Each time I replay the game, I dig it out as a reference point: https://bit.ly/3JLdvOR

-...Vice City/San Andreas next?

The Securicar was the worst and it would always show up in the middle of a sodding mission, so this news cheers me. That fucking Dodo though, goddammit.

I know its got fairly mid reviews but I started Ghostwire Tokyo on PS5 over the weekend and I have really, really enjoyed it so far. Really enjoy the art style, tone and design of the game. Coming off of Elden Ring I actually really appreciate that its not fucking enormous and challenging. Its just fun to play and I dont really need games to be anything more than that most of the time.

Speaking of, I also have played the first few levels of Kirby and the Forgotten Land and its just first class 3D platforming. Absolutely lovely stuff.

Unrelated note - it's being widely reported that Playstation are revealing their Game Pass competitor (currently codenamed Spartacus) this week. Sounds like they are going to amalgamate PS+ and PSNow but with additional tiers and a suite of current games as well as PS1, 2, 3 and 4 games and maybe PSP and Vita?

Moving house soonish so traded some of the stuff I've had sitting around for ages into CEX. Done about £200 worth so far.

Grabbed GT7 as that was in the store.

Trying to decide between Elden Ring and the new WWE game next. The latter I'd probably enjoy more knowing I haven't really paid much for it.

Babymetal are fucking great, or they were when they had legit writers behind them.

I'm replaying Deadly Premonition on the Switch, going to 100% all the side quests this time. It's great to be able to use the better shooting controls from Directors Cut without the bad aesthetic decisions that version made, I guess the dodgy old man cut-scenes from that version are no longer canon either.

The PS Plus changes start in June:

Quote

PlayStation Plus Essential (£6.99 monthly / £19.99 quarterly / £49.99 yearly) offers the same benefits as PlayStation Plus now, namely two monthly downloadable games, online multiplayer access, cloud storage for saved games, and extra discounts.

PlayStation Plus Extra (£10.99 monthly / £31.99 quarterly / £83.99 yearly) adds to the above a catalogue of 400 PS4 and PS5 games to download "including blockbuster hits from our PlayStation Studios catalogue and third-party partners".

PlayStation Plus Premium (£13.49 monthly / £39.99 quarterly / £99.99 yearly) goes further, with 340 additional games. PS3 games will be available to stream, while classic PS1, PS2 and PSP games will be available to stream or download. Time-limited game trials will also be included for players to try before they buy.

Happy to see PS1/2/PSP games but still no downloadable PS3 games? I guess Sony still can't find a way to emulate them well.

"PS Plus Extra — £83.99/$99.99 Per Year

PS Plus Extra includes everything from the PS Plus Essential tier alongside nearly 400 downloadable PS5 and PS4 games. At launch, the line-up will include Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal."

- Push Square

I will be pretty happy with this is the PS5 games are of a similar quality to Returnal. Stuff I like the look of but don't really want to jump in on for full price.

I've got Now and Plus so I guess I'll be seeing what all this is about, but will definitely depend on the quality of the content etc as to whether I stick with it long term or not.

If you've got Now and Plus you'll pretty much be paying an extra penny for them both bundled together.

With Elden Ring being the big thing right now I'm surprised they didn't announce Demon's Souls as one of the first games, that could have been a good hook.

But Sony have said it won't be releasing big games to the service like Microsoft do with Gamepass.

Streets Of Rage 4 is coming to Android and iPhone on May 25th. You can pre-order it through the play store now. There's no price listed, but it does mention in-app purchases.

It'll be interesting to see how it runs and how the controls are implemented. It does have controller support. I could see the Mr X Nightmare survival mode being particularly challenging on a touch screen. It could be one to keep an eye on.
