Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted August 11, 2016 Paid Members Share Posted August 11, 2016 We have a Hungarian lad working with us here and his name is Balazs. Game for a laugh, always slagging people and I call him Baps, Blaze or Dusty and heās happy enough with that.Apparently I crossed a line today, as on his Facebook page people were posting Happy Birthday in Hungarian. In work at the coffee machine, I said āHere Baps, Bulldog Slipknot!ā because thatās what his Facebook birthday stream reads like. I was reported for racism. Iām not joking. My boss ā sheās actually sound, in fairness - had the door closed with me for a half hour there saying āI have no idea what to do with this complaint at all. When he told me I nearly laughed at the absurdity of it all, but apparently you really offended himā So I had to pull him to one side, apologise, and Iām on a verbal warning that isnāt really a verbal warning and heās all sulky in the corner there. Madness. Just a cheesy throwaway remark, and Iām akin to Stalin.

Paid Members Gus Mears Posted August 11, 2016 Paid Members Share Posted August 11, 2016 (edited) . You shouldn't even have a 'almost' verbal warning, the company needs to grow a knob and balls and appreciate that you have done nothing wrong. Ā Screaming 'racism' at that comment is the sort of thing that lowers the gravity of actual racism. Edited August 11, 2016 by Gus Mears
Paid Members ElCece Posted August 11, 2016 Paid Members Share Posted August 11, 2016 If anything there Branquey your make a plank off your self delibrately mispronouncing Hungarian. Paid Members SpursRiot2012 Posted August 11, 2016 Paid Members Share Posted August 11, 2016 This is why you should always remember that your work mates aren't your friends. At best, they're acquaintances. Barely more than strangers, really, and as we all know: death to the stranger.
Paid Members Sergio Mendacious Posted August 11, 2016 Author Paid Members Share Posted August 11, 2016 What if they're your friends, though? I think you've overlooked that.
UK Kat Von D
What if they're your friends, though? I think you've overlooked that. That can make it even worse. One of my friends works for me, and there have been a few cases were I've had to discipline him recently and it is the most awkward thing ever. Paid Members Tommy! Posted August 11, 2016 Paid Members Share Posted August 11, 2016 I never had a problem with that. Business is business, pleasure is pleasure. It's nothing personal.
Undefeated Steak
I've learned to never mix friends or family with business/work (except in rare circumstances). The risk of problems usually far outweighs any possible advantages from hiring them or working for them. It always seems like a great idea with no risk until something inevitably goes wrong. Otto Dem Wanz
Not sure whether I agree with you entirely Steak, but if you replaced 'mix friends or family with business/work' with 'having current colleagues on social media' I'm with you 100%. Guest
The worst thing is people from work sending Facebook invites amd feeling the pressure to accept them. The two shouldn't mix
