Tried to make it my day job, but it's a struggling industry as it is without my area being over-run with others undercutting each other. I do the odd bit of proper photography (weddings, babies, portraits, events, etc..) but I'd rather keep as a hobby with the occassional cash bonus, as I think if I was spending all my time trying to scrape by on every bit of paid work I could get, then I'd end up hating it.

Which is how I feel about my day job which is as a web designer. Ended up carving a niche as an outsourcer for larger companies, but nearly jacked it in when the going was tough. I did find a flimsy excuse to have NSFW stuff on my computer though - I did a porn website for an entrepreneur which never took off.

There are some great photos being posted in this thread. I've been on and off with DSLRs for the last 18 months and owned one 3 times, along with about 6 different compacts. My problem is that I really like macro photography and to get good results with a DSLR I need to invest in lenses and budget has never allowed me to that - having children does that! I can get good results with a compact but blown up you lose quality and you have to get close to a subject which will often scare said subject away. When Lucas is older I'll invest time and money propetly, for now I'll make do with what my Panasonic TZ10 can offer.

First half decent photo taken with my TZ10 - it was quite windy so I was lucky to get a brief moment of calm.

Lava of something or other! Only 1cm in size - the macro capabilities of the Panasonic FZ38 are pretty good for low res requirements.

I've dreamt similar situations to that, but with me in place of the bear.

Do it the way I did it. Get an old prime lens from eBay and a set of cheap extension tubes. You'll be manually focussing anyway, and won't need it to be particularly fast as you'll be stopping down, so won't need anything modern. You should be able to kit yourself out for around

Hardly a sight to behold, but I stumbled upon this happy image at my old job:

That looks such a friendly toilet. Why kick it in the face? :(

For anyone interested, (I think) all of these were taken on a Nikon D80. The squirrel, the guitarist, the bearded singer (Plug: Duncan from The Elreys) and Wagner were with the 70-300mm VR. The spider was taken with the 50mm f1.8 and a

I have a D70 with standard 18-70 lens (and macro, plus some old (& not too good) lenses off fleabay (up to 200mm)) - want to get a decent zoom lens, which would you recommend? Guessing the 70-300 VR cost a bomb???

The 70-300mm VR is currently going for around the
