EBB -It would seem around 2009 before the Nate fight he trained with Jackson.

Wand- Your logic was on the money with BJ vs Stevenson, I wish I would have gone to that show. Thing with picks are people can sway you, I just go on my own instinct these days and was up until recent times quite good.

That was the start of BJ's prime, a prime that should have started 4 years earlier!

Yeah I know what you mean about being swayed. I think if I'd been on the internet more in 07/08 I might have been influenced by people talking up Stevenson's chances.

I try to stick to my gut instincts these days. The upcoming Shogun/Vera fight for example. Everytime I read about that people are saying Shogun will crush him, it's an easy fight etc I disagree. If I had no internet right now I'd see that as a tough fight for Shogun just based off their styles. But the opinion online has it as an easy night's work. Of course I hope they're right but I don't wanna let it sway me and get my hopes up.

I've got a feeling a lot of people will be surprised come Aug 5th. Everything I'm hearing from Vera, he sees this as the biggest fight of his life/defining career moment and for once he seems well fired up. If Shogun takes Vera, lightly this could backfire. This is no cakewalk for Shogun. I think at the very least this will be a much better fight than most think

Im thinking of dropping a few quid on Vera. Its the fight that could kick start his career, he has nothing to lose. Style wise i think it suits him...and look at the fight Shogun's coming off! One of the most gruelling and brutal fights in MMA history, before that was the Jones beating. Add all that to the fact that he turned down the Teixeira fight...it all makes me think that Shogun aint coming into this thing quite right.

I have had some good upset picks, so I would advise Vera if you feel he has a a chance, if I was a gambler I would be quids in on some of these.

I picked Forrest over Rampage and Shogun, when popular opinion said I was mad, also Luiz Cane over Jason Lambert which was a mild upset at the time. I have made some blunders as well, I picked Ken Flo over BJ I got some stick from that on a forum I used to post on.

I almost picked JDS over Werdum after Werdum came in looking like a fat fuck as well.

Haha, I actually picked JDS to beat Werdum and won a 40 quid bet with my mate over it.

I remember Werdum was being talked up for title shots and was obviously the favourite going in. Like most I'd never heard of JDS.

Anyway, I expected Werdum to beat this no name without too much trouble. Two things changed my mind. One, Werdum looked flabby on fight week which made me question how serious he'd taken it. And then I saw Dana's video blog and saw JDS for the first time. He was hitting the pads with such force I thought he was gonna knock the fuckers arms out the sockets. And it was only for the media stuff, he was going light! I thought this guy looks dangerous, Werdum looks fat = could be an upset.

My mate doesn't bother watching weigh ins and never saw JDS hitting the pads. I deliberately never showed him. And he came to UFC 80 with me and saw Werdum put Gonzaga away (who was still highly rated then) so he thought I was nuts to pick JDS.

So yeah I ended up 40 quid up No wonder I was such a JDS fan since

I reckon that when it comes to the weigh in see what Rua looks like, because sometimes he looks a little flabby and other times like bit of a beast. Though i do think Vera could be the hungrier of the 2 and give Rua a lot of trouble.

Good story Wand.

If Vera had not burnt be so much in the past and failed to deliver on my high expectations for him, I would pick him as I feel Shogun maybe on the decline, the war with Hendo as EBB said will put miles of the clock.

Vera could indeed be hungrier and in better shape, but for whatever reason almost every fight he has had in the past 6 years (yes that long) he has failed to deliver, even in victory he looks bad (Reece Andy) the talent and potential he showed was so long ago I refuse to buy into him again.

Shogun should be able to do enough

Yeah Shogun's a hard one to judge by physique. He looked lean and in better than usual shape weeks even months out from the second Forrest fight, then on fight night he looked quite podgy. He looked soft vs Hendo too and still did well late. He's a tricky one. The best shape I've seen him in in the UFC was probably the Liddell fight.

I don't think it's so much laziness with him like it seems to be with BJ Penn, I just think he's so injury prone these days that it's hindering him in training. I honestly don't see him still fighting in 3 years time.

I just think Vera's gonna be tough to win a striking match with (has Vera ever been outstruck on the feet), and tough for Shogun to take down (see the Couture fight). Also like Ebb said Shogun's coming off a career shortening war, who knows what that fight really took out of him, and Hendo.

Shogun's wafer like bones and brittle knees vs Vera's brutal leg kicks is not a match I like the sound of at all. either.

Good story Wand.

The original bet was 50 quid but when it came time to pay up he was bellyaching about not having enough petrol money so I graciously let him off a tenner. I might remind him when I see him.

I wasn't massively confident JDS would win but I was more of a betting man back then and had more spare cash to risk losing than I do now.

I swear though, you should have seen the look on his face when Werdum plopped to his knees. It was priceless. His face went whiter than a pornstar's after a 10 man bukakke session. Then he went a funny shade of red in anger, or embarrassment, or both. And he was so fucking cocky before the fight aswell.

He still whinges about it to this day and roots against JDS every time. It's sad but seeing his disappointment as the opponents fall one by one is a guilty pleasure of mine and something I now look forward to.

Glad you got through it man.

I remember punching a TV after breaking up from a ex girlfriend in 2006 when Tim Sylvia won the belt, so for acting like a cretin I think I have you beat. In the rotters stake I was being wooed by a girl who looked like The Great Khali, I spurned her advances though

Cheers Jim. Haha Khali, lucky escape.

Funny thing is the girl I'm with now is one of my best mate's sister and apparently I met her in that crappy spell. I was so messed up back then I don't remember any of it. She said I looked like a serial killer, I had a full on beard and I was skinny as fuck. She thought I was a druggy.

I met her last year for what I thought was the first time and we've been together a year now. It terrifies me to think I can't even remember meeting her before. She only told me recently, I asked my mate and he said I went there to watch Chuck vs Wand with him on Bravo. I honestly don't recall it.
