Loki
American Hustle feels like it's about four hours long. Â So, American Hustle was great. Funny, well written with some cracking performances. Not too slow at all, so ignore Maverick. Â With such a powerhouse cast, I thought that an unrecognisable Jennifer Lawrence absolutely stole the show. I would never have recognised her from Winter's Bone or Hunger Games, so complete was her transformation. I definitely have a massive crush on her now, and she's my favourite actress of the moment. Â Best of all a rare, and brief, decent performance from Robert De Niro. Somewhat amusing seeing as Bale seemed to be doing a broad De Niro impersonation throughout. GalaxyV.2
David O Russel seems to be the only person who is stopping De Niro from falling into full on joke.
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted February 20, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted February 20, 2014 De Niro will never be a "full on joke", regardless of what an average director like Russell can do for him.
Paid Members Maverick Posted February 20, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted February 20, 2014 I thought it was all over the place. Not to mention slow and boring. I enjoyed Bale and Renner along with De Niros cameo but Bradley Cooper was awful. Seems to be splitting opinion from what iv'e seen.

You have seen hsi recent output? His best performance for years was in Silver Linings, and he's good in his cameo on in American Hustle. I would say those two parts remind people that De Niro can still be excellent. Maybe I was harsh with 'full on joke' but his reputation has slightly suffered, and at the moment O Russel's films are the only ones he shows how good he is. KingOfMetal
He's Robert De Niro! He can do whatever he wants.  Meanwhile: The producers of Oscar-nominated film Wolf of Wall Street are being sued for $25m (

Yes, his reputation has slightly suffered if you're an idiot who doesn't really know any of his achievements. But ultimately he can be in whatever shite he wants as he will always be remembered as the guy who did Once Upon A Time In America, Midnight Run, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, The King Of Comedy, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, The Godfather Part 2, Brazil, The Untouchables, Cape Fear and so on. No amount of nondescript films is ever going to massively affect his reputation.  You're also confusing quality of performance with quality of films. I've seen Meet The Parents, for instance. It's shit. But he's not. And he almost never is. Edited February 21, 2014 by Devon Malcolm
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted February 21, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted February 21, 2014 Grudge Match is rather enjoyable, despite a fleet of militant movie buff's protests to the contrary.
