While I wasn’t an enormous fan, he strikes me as the kind of wrestler who would have ended up in a comfortable Mark Briscoe-level role, earning a good wage in the process. Instead, he threw a hissy fit, WWE predictably went nowhere near him and I’d be very surprised to see him wrestle for a major company again. Quote

Actually, a lot of wrestlers get very upset over PWI rankings and I’ve seen Jim Cornette rant about it. All these years and people haven’t learnt is all done on stats, matches and titles won etc. It’s literally a kayfabe list and they all get wound up every year. See for the big example of another wrestler who would always moan about their ranking - Mercedes Mone. Quote

I'm trying to think of a better comp than Mark Briscoe-level. Blake Christian/Lee Moriarty/Jay Lethal type. The ROH regular with occasional appearances on TV. He definitely would have a Collision loss to ZSJ during Forbidden Door season. Quote

I think he’d have done better than that though, he’s a talented guy whose wrestling style seems like something Tony Khan would appreciate. It also felt like his stock was high at that time. I’d have been tempted to shove him in a tag team with John Silver - two smaller men who are absolute tanks and would offer something very different in the tag division as a result. It was always a little self-serious, the equivalent of ROH's "we do submissions so we're like Kurt Angle but without the fun therefore better" midcard circa 2004, for me to have much interest in him. He probably gave a lot of smaller guys hope that they could still be monsters/main-eventers, provided they were bulky enough. Not having seen Gresham, I don't know how he wrestles, but I was always impressed by how cleverly the Taz gimmick was done. It wasn't just the bulk or the intensity, he also wrestled a style that suggested he knew how to use his style to be brutal, i.e. suplexes (which both in kayfabe and shoot are more about using a low point of gravity and leverage than strength, but still look like they need brute force), and submissions. Add wrestling gear that shows off tree-trunk legs and emphasises barrel shape, and it all comes together to make lightning in a bottle. Presumably, Gresham is missing several of those elements.
