I didn't know Higgins was a socialist - I thought he'd been selected out of the Fìne Gael/Fianna Fàil centrist miasma. I know it is predominantly ceremonial, but in the same way that local council elections here are often treated like polls for the general election, I'm hoping it's some sort of indicator for voting intention in Ireland in the future. It would be reassuring given the rather horrendous (and no doubt oligarch-funded) xenophobic swell there at the moment. Quote

He was a Labour Senator before becoming President, and had never been involved with Tweedledum or TweedleFG. He wasn't even the first socialist to hold the post either - Mary Robinson had similar credentials back in the 90s. Quote
