But she's been wrestling for a year. She can't end the winning streak of the biggest name in aews women's division. I know mercedes isn't that popular. But the fact is she's still the biggest name in the aew women's division. I think Cameron will do well in aew. But she can't be beating an unbeaten mercedes mone for the title. That's just not how wrestling works She can and she absolutely should. If your point is that she wasn't ready to take the title at Grand Slam, either in or out of kayfabe, I'd agree. But with a little bit more experience, she is most definitely the star that they should be using Mercedes' title run to create. She's fantastic at almost everything and very competent at the rest. I thought Grand Slam came too soon for her but I would keep her nagging and nagging at Mercedes until All In and then pull the trigger on their biggest stage. Then I'd work hard on how to avoid her becoming The Acclaimed. Quote
Paid Members Supremo Posted February 26, 2025 Paid Members Posted February 26, 2025 A rookie, only a year into the business, going undefeated and then beating Hulk Hogan for the World Title in the Georgia Dome, in front of 40,000? That’s not how wrestling works. Quote

I could be wrong but I'd imagine someone winning the title who has been wrestling for a year and ending the winning streak of the most established wrestlers in the industry wouldn't be a good thing from a business point of view. I'm not saying she's the best just so you know. She's struggling with aew fans and Tony storm has one of the best gimmicks I've ever seen in women's wrestling. So thats not what I'm saying Quote

I'm not sure it is. Any drop off in the company or the character after the Goldberg title win was because the company was still completely built around Hogan and nWo drama, not because Goldberg wasn't an elite worker. He was still responsible for their biggest ratings, he was in the match that secured their last ever MNW ratings win, and when the belt was taken off him 5 months later, the consensus is that it was too soon. That's born out by the numbers in January 1999 which were still great for him personally, even after he was made to look like a plank by the title change and the stupid angle on Jan 4th. The key is always in the follow-up. WCW's was shite, whether Goldberg could have carried more or not, they didn't try. AEW waited and waited with The Acclaimed and still cooled them off big-time which worries me for anyone in this spot. Hopefully they've learned lessons. Quote

Sorry, I should've clarified: I meant he was the exception that proved the rule in terms of what got him there. The initial assertion was that "that's not how wrestling works", and there are plenty more examples of pushes done right and pushes done wrong to demonstrate that, whilst a big part of Goldberg's impact and "wow" factor was because he defied conventional reasoning. He had a look, physical charisma, and presence that enabled the bookers to break their own rules. But they could only do it once in a generation, because it just wouldn't work normally. A bit like Warrior, I suppose. Quote
Paid Members Supremo Posted February 26, 2025 Paid Members Posted February 26, 2025 My point was that pro-wrestling is anything you want it to be, and you should always be willing to make exceptions. And if you don’t think Harley Cameron is exceptional, then I don’t know what to tell you. She’s one of the most exciting, talented performers to come along in ages. Goldberg couldn’t do ventriloquism or play guitar! Quote

A bit like Warrior, I suppose. I get your point but they'd just done it - with Goldberg. He only hammered Raven for the US Title in April 98. He was incredibly green at that point and easily the least experienced US Champ ever. There are no rules you don't break when you have something on your hands that isn't going to be there forever. 2 minutes ago, Supremo said: My point was that pro-wrestling is anything you want it to be, and you should always be willing to make exceptions. Jade Cargill also. She was undefeated from her debut in January 2021, winning the TBS title in January 2022 as the first person to win it, and being the champ until her first career singles defeat in May 2023. Quote

Goldberg couldn’t do ventriloquism or play guitar! I haven't been watching AEW or any wrestling properly recently, so I'll take your word for it. It was just that some on here have said she's quite limited in-ring, which, from what I understand, could be a bit of a problem with the AEW product. 5 minutes ago, tiger_rick said: I get your point but they'd just done it - with Goldberg. I have to apologise again, because my lack of clarity is now going to look like I'm moving the goalposts - but I did mean the elevation/ascension of a career, not just single moments. It's still Goldberg. Put it this way: can you name anyone else during that era they could've booked like they booked Goldberg's rise? Quote
