Football Predictions League 2024-25

It's the UKFF Football Predictions League again!

The rules are as ever: three points for an exact score, one for a correct results, and loads of ways to score bonus points. Plus a Cup competition these days too.

Sign-ups are now closed. We have the standings on this line from the end of Week 2 onwards, so here they are.

===

We were going to feature the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals this time, but three ties have the overwhelming favourites at home, and the other match with two middling Premiership sides has been brought forward to Friday night. Beyond that, there are two huge clashes in Italy and the WSL is finally starting so we get two Arsenal-Man City meetings back to back on Sunday. The second of those rounds out half a dozen EPL encounters nicely.

Unusually, @ultimo the great didn't make Manchester United his first pick this season. Instead, he opted for Wythenshawe Town (not to be confused with cross-town rivals Wythenshawe Amateurs) who were meant to be at home to Witton Albion this weekend. However, they've made good progress in the FA Trophy so we're checking in on that competition earlier than I was anticipating. There's no extra time at this stage, or replays at all in the Trophy these days, and we disregard penalty shootouts so feel free to bet on that tie as if it were a league match. Can Jamie Vardy's old club stop ultimo from drawing level with Tilde at the top?

Posted (edited)

I almost forgot since I'm not really back in the swing of things myself yet, but the results went into the opening post on Sunday night (as evidenced by my poor Fantasy League start). I made that edit from a bungalow in deepest Somerset and am now typing this from a hotel room in Bristol. Things should be back to normal next week and then for the next couple of months until I'm away from my North Walian base again in November, but we'll figure something out.

===

Luckily this is the only round all season where there's no new table link to mess around with, so I'll just race through the standings: in a high-scoring start with an average of 10.56 points, Tilde leads on 15, with newcomer Gooner not far behind having bagged a baker's dozen. I Bent My Wookie also makes it to the podium, then the following trio were also into double figures – MVP RULZ, ultimo, Chutney Spoon. Myself and Rory were again inseparable on 9 apiece, then bringing up the rear for the opener is Vegeta on a still more than respectable 8 points.

Everyone nabbed at least one exact score, with bonuses going to the top two and the defending champion for guessing the correct scoreline on match #1, Arsenal v Wolves. Almost needless to say, everybody got the right result there, so it was good selection by the randomiser for the inaugural 'wildcard' fixture of the season since the extra points came down to getting it spot on. Elsewhere, wins for Man City, Newcastle Utd, Dundee Utd, Lautern and Schalke all generally proved fruitful, whilst a score draw at The City Ground wasn't far behind. Home reverses at Goodison Park and the London (Olympic) Stadium ended up as more of a mixed bag, whereas one of the two big Saturday shocks in Scotland caught us all out.

===

Bit of housekeeping as it's still early doors: most people posted in the sign-up thread, PMed me and played this week which is the clearest way to demonstrate your commitment. Entries are valid for now if you've only done the last of those things but in a fortnight you'll need to have completed the second as well, and there are still two people outstanding on that front.

Which means we've had 21 "Dare 2 Disagree" teams selected to date. Since nobody has specified otherwise, we're assuming they're all men's sides so far. Two international teams have been chosen, but only as a third pick in both cases. Of the 19 clubs, they represent five different FIFA members and within England, range from the top flight to the tenth tier.

If you're confused about D2Ds, it might help to see one in action. And there's good news on that front because the next set of 10 is going to be popped into the original post in just a tick, including the first D2D of the campaign so you can find out how it all works...
