The Gaffer
I'd say the whole "God, not talking about this part of the wrestling!" subgenre went full Young-Ones-bus-scene sometime during the summer, really .

Paid Members Lion_of_the_Midlands Posted 13 hours ago Paid Members Share Posted 13 hours ago Ratings are not relevant to anything to do with AEW. If they were their licensing fee would have reduced rather than doubled and the highest paid ratings draws would be whoever it is that is the star of The Big Bang Theory.

I think Darby could be a tremendous prick heel at some point down the line. I'm not suggesting it should be soon but I think he has it in him.

If they exhaust every avenue as a face then they should definitely explore heel options if they think they've got a good reason to do so and be able to pull it off properly. And the majority of performers can do it. But it's all about timing. Shouldn't just be done for immediate shock value.
Paid Members LaGoosh Posted 12 hours ago Paid Members Share Posted 12 hours ago This week was the first week in months where I feel like they paced and laid out the show pretty perfectly. I usually loathe the dreaded 15 minute opening promo on my wrestling shows but it being OC and it being so out of character for him actually made it work because it stood out rather than feeling routine. Him then cutting a belter of a promo certainly helped too. 10/10.

Who’d have ever predicted Wheeler suits would be such an effective prick heel, or that PAC could be so intimidating while was Adrian Neville in NXT? Or Bayley, when she was a smiley babyface in NXT? Maybe Cassidy, Darby and Willow have that in them too - they’re all very talented, and I’m sure they could all be effective heels if given the chance. That said, there’s absolutely no chance it’s happening with OC right now. Edited 10 hours ago by RedTwoster

On the subject - I don't think Pac ever really clicked in AEW until recently. This affiliation with the BCC suits him perfectly. Easily the best he's been. Paid Members Supremo Posted 10 hours ago Paid Members Share Posted 10 hours ago (edited) What even is pro-wrestling, if it’s not silly, funny imagery that makes you laugh? The exact same energy! BUT WAS IT SYMBOLIC?! This was a great show. Already feels like the work they started putting in around Wrestledream is paying off. I mentioned it in the Smackdown thread regarding The Bloodline, but it applies here, too. Most of the time, it really is this easy to do pro-wrestling. Simple, basic, meat and potatoes stuff. It never goes out of style. By all means, try and be clever and subversive where you can, but ultimately, you can’t go wrong if you constantly imagine Michael Scott saying, “explain it to me like I’m five.” Fantastic opening promo from Orange. I’m delighted he’s finally being positioned as a top guy. Annoyed it’s almost a year late, he should have moved into the World Title picture after his phenomenal run as International Champion came to an end late last year, but oh well. At least we got there in the end. It’s also an amazing new layer to Orange Cassidy’s contemporary character. “Wrestler that can’t really be bothered trying,” was funny enough. Adding, “accidentally becoming important in your job,” makes it even better. Forgive me for not noticing Adam Cole’s rubbish psychology. I was too distracted by how ridiculously yellow he was. I hope it was just a bad spray tan, or a weird reflection of the (brilliant) orange ring ropes. I’ll feel bad taking the piss if he’s actually jaundice or something, but man. It was crazy. I was going to make a joke about how he looked like a character in The Simpsons, but I don’t think even that does it justice. Specifically, he looked like Mr. Burns in the X-Files episode. Glowing yellow! There’s the doctor trying to take Cole backstage to check on his ankle. “Come on, you neon bastard.” Kyle Fletcher continues to be surprisingly competent in these promos against Ospreay. Hangman threatening to burn Jay White’s house down was brilliant. Like Swerve’s house was the gateway crime and he’s now completely lost all perspective. You don’t even have to do anything particularly bad to Hangman anymore. Just beating him in some wrestling matches and he’s ordering petrol in bulk off Amazon. Best character in the game. Great segment with Moxley and The Deathriders. I like how you couldn’t tell whether Yuta was in on it, or whether he’s just a pathetic pawn they use however they see fit. Prick needs to be chinned by Nigel McGuiness either way, of course. Surprised Darby’s back already, but I’m not complaining. Danny Garcia, Orange Cassidy and Darby Allin as my top babyface heroes works for me, brother. I quite fancy an Anarchy in the Arena for World’s End. Young Bucks vs. Private Party was bloody brilliant. What a turnaround for the new Champs! If it wasn’t for Matt Hardy trying to leech off their success on Twitter you’d almost forget this is the same team who did fuck all for about three years, floating around the Stairwell Cinematic Universe, muttering about contracts. The Young Bucks aren’t what they once were. They’re way more inconsistent and it’s a huge shame the EVP heel run sort of fizzled out, but every now and then they put out a performance like this and remind you how great they are. Awesome stuff. Those last few minutes of near falls hit like crack. I punched the air for the finish. Get in! Bonus points for Tony Schiavone banging on about how Private Party proved you should never give up and alway try your best. Always inspiring our youth, Uncle Tone. I understand people who say this should have gone on last and been one of those classic Dynamite Feelgood Endings. But I can also understand why they wanted to make Lashley’s debut as big as possible. And ultimately, it’s a good thing to be in a position where there are a few big highlights on a single show that could potentially close it. Okada still being paid millions to do almost nothing, just grinning like an idiot, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Funniest man in wrestling. Loved Jack Perry’s little scuffle with Danny Garcia. That throwaway line, “they used to dance for me,” was the most poignant, dramatic thing he’s done since returning. Really took me by surprise. Fuck off Jericho. Every week. Fuck off. Really good main event. Three matches in and this is already the best thing Shelton Lesnar has ever done. Swerve looked great, too. Loved everything about Lashley’s debut. MVP making the call. The Big Time presentation. The hot beat down. The cool closing shot. And the fact Lashley didn’t make any references to Nazi Germany. Home run. Couldn’t have gone better. Also, I know it won’t turn the tide massively or anything, but the amount of Black representation on this show was really noticeable. Especially given the current climate in the bubble. Obviously it won’t be for everyone though. I know at least one man who probably wasn’t a fan. But yeah. Jamie Hayter as Daphne. Five stars. Paid Members I Bent My Wookie Posted 9 hours ago Paid Members Share Posted 9 hours ago Reports one of the Bucks has been working with a separated shoulder and that is an explanation as to why they've written themselves off really does make it more impressive that they've probably wrestled more while he's been injured this last few weeks than the months prior when healthy.
Paid Members Supremo Posted 9 hours ago Paid Members Share Posted 9 hours ago Desperately hoping we get skits of Jack Perry and Okada sitting awkwardly together. Realising they’ve never hung out individually and have nothing in common.
