TibBo Posted February 1 Posted February 1 Ahh it could be! Looks a bit Bushwhacker Luke-ish too? Quote
Merzbow Posted February 1 Posted February 1 I can definitely see that now you mention it. It's funny how some of those on the cover didn't even have an equivalent in the game itself, no Abby for certain. I think the arcade protagonist was based on Stan Hansen but the console version has a different player character? Quote
Paid Members FLips Posted February 11 Author Paid Members Posted February 11 Ecco is one of those games where you wonder how it got so big. It looked amazing and the soundtrack was quality, but the gameplay was cryptic and difficult, and the story was some wild nonsense about aliens that turned into a claustrophobic horror halfway in. I don't think I've ever made it off the first proper level. I did almost bring it up in my post about the GEMS sound chip but excluded it because it uses a modified version apparently. The series as a whole has some brilliant sounds. One of the original creators confirmed they remastering/remaking the first two and creating a new game also. My hopes aren't massive for them, but I'll give them a look. All they need to do really is improve the controls as that was the main issue. https://www.ign.com/articles/ecco-the-dolphin-creator-confirms-multiple-games-in-development-says-ecco-has-always-been-more-than-a-game-about-a-dolphin Quote

cobra_gordo Posted February 11 Posted February 11 Nobody I knew could figure out what we were meant to be doing either so we'd always end up doing a few flips out of the water and then turning it off and playing something else instead. Quote

That’s very likely it to be honest. I think Altered Beast benefit from the same position but that one isn’t too bad, even if other beat em ups later on the console show it up. Quote
TildeGuy~! Posted February 11 Posted February 11 (edited) Although not my favourite Mega Drive pieces of music this is always one of the first that springs to mind. Edited February 11 by TildeGuy~! Quote

Paid Members Arch Stanton Posted February 12 Paid Members Posted February 12 So happy that my feelings on Ecco The Dolphin dating back over thirty years are now validated. When I was little, I just thought I was crap or stupid for not knowing what to do or how to do it. @cobra_gordo I did just the same as you... A few flips out the water, a bit of a swim around and turned it off before I had to watch a fucking dolphin drown. Quote
Paid Members FLips Posted February 13 Author Paid Members Posted February 13 Yeah I know Trident and Jetta. I’m something of an Eternal Champions fan myself! That screenshot is from the Sega CD sequel Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Darkside (if I remember the name right) which was basically the same game with a hugely expanded roster and loads of new stages and fatalities. Sadly they didn’t make the game mechanics any more accessible. I always liked Xavier, Rax and Midknight. Quote
Merzbow Posted February 13 Posted February 13 (edited) Has anyone bought physical copies of any of the modern Mega Drive games? Games like Xeno Crisis and Pier Solar have reviewed pretty well and come out in recent years by indie devs for the console. Paprium is the one that stood out the most for me, and not just because it went through a million controversies due to the developer being a fucking weirdo.. just look at the pixel art, it's ace. Edit: found a site that catalogues all modern physical releases https://md.restartmag.com/ Edited February 13 by Merzbow Quote
Paid Members FLips Posted February 13 Author Paid Members Posted February 13 My repro cart I have for the Mega Drive has Xeno Crisis on it and it’s brilliant, if impossibly difficult! I played Pier Solar years ago when it got a release on PS4 or Wii U, I can’t remember which. I didn’t think a whole lot to it to be honest but I never committed to it much so maybe will revisit on the Mega Drive. Never heard of Paprium but that screenshot looks really good, I’ll look it up. The cartridge I have has Streets of Rage 2 Remake or something on, which is fantastic. Basically Streets of Rage 2 with loads of QoL improvements and extra characters. Quote
cobra_gordo Posted February 13 Posted February 13 I'm sure I've mentioned it before, probably in this thread, but I've been a massive fan of the Mortal Kombat games since first seeing the arcade version aged 7 whilst on a caravaning holiday. My kids got me the Legacy collection for the Switch for my birthday. It's got all the old games and you can pick which platform version to play. There's the original arcade versions and SNES (blood cheat FTW) but as I was always a Megadrive kid I've been rinsing the Genesis versions on it for the last couple of days. Was having a nice play on Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 last night (which my nan bought me on Megadrive for Christmas 1995 so I've always been fond of it) when my 13 year old son asked if he could play against me. No worries, any opportunity to hang out with him. He's played that and Trilogy before so he's pretty good as Scorpion and he got a few wins. So I said, how about we play my favourite MK game, and stuck Mortal Kombat 2 on. And proceeded to unlock like a Russian sleeper agent and battered him in to oblivion seven or eight times in a row as Lui Kang. The thing that caught him off guard was the speed. To be honest I'd forgotten how fast MK2 is, there's a real intensity to it and I think that's what instantly had him on the back foot. It still looks beautiful too, particularly The Dead Pool and Kombat Tomb stages. I remember at the time thinking what a massive improvement on the first game it was and I think it still holds up. It's fast, the moves more varied, the finishers more insane and, maybe it's nostalgia, it still feels really intense and at times, because of the music, ominous. Going to try and complete the tournament mode on it later instead of just doing versus fights. Quote
