I think Ti West might be done with this series, but I'd be happy to see him continue with it

Haven't seen MaXXXine yet so my thoughts might change but the triology seems to somewhat work within three distinctive eras of film - Pearl being early technicolor (and I guess some of the 60/70s horror that brought those bright colours back), X being seedy 70s slasher and MaXXXine being the giallo/neon 70s/80s style.

I'm not sure where you'd go from there. I think the most distinctive horror trend in the 90s was updated 70s slasher stuff (often with a chunk of postmodern self awareness) - whilst the X films are somewhat postmodern I don't think self aware works there and they've already done modern take on 70s slasher. Later horror and you're into Ti West's career so that starts getting a bit snake eating tail.

I guess there's black and white but that might feel a bit too affected? Whilst you can clearly see how each film has it's own style and where it comes from black and white early horror / cinema really forces you into a specific look rather than the others. Also the films are all rooted in sexuality, aping an era where sexuality was more repressed in film feels restrictive (although now I say that there's potentially plenty to mine there - although Pearl has already covered repression of sexuality pretty heavily).

Then again, I'm not a film maker :D It's possible the creative people paid to make films might have more ideas than I

I think Ti West has said that he has some ideas foe the X 'universe' (ugh) should he continue with it. I personally would like to see what happens to Maxine in the late 1980s, particularly after how the last film ended.

I haven't even bothered going to see Maxxxine even for Mia Goth, the first two were so mediocre. Ti West really sucks.

The Lost City

Chose this based on the main cast (Tatum and Bullock) so was pleasantly surprised at some really good turns from Daniel Radcliffe, Patti Harrison, and Brad Pitt (among others) in supporting roles.

Good fun, with more “adult” jokes than we expected going in. Everyone is hamming it up and there’s some decent action in it too.

It feels just shy of reaching it’s potential but does enough to cover it’s problems.

Ticket to Paradise

George Clooney and Julia Roberts play a spiteful but super rich divorced couple who decide to team up to sabotage their daughter's upcoming marriage they don't approve of. It's incredibly bland with a story and characters that seem unrealistic (daughter meets guy, falls in love, arranges full wedding in the space of two months, completely on the isolated tropical island of Bali).

The whole premise is mean. You don't want to root for the spiteful parents but the characters are all so one-note and the romance rushed that you get where they're coming from and kind of want them to succeed. The story is actually more about George and Julia reconnecting again and re-falling in love. The whole film feels like some sort of financial write off combined with the chance to get George and Julia on holiday to Bali. Even by romcom standards it's vanilla nonsense.

It's not offensively bad but it's not one you'd watch again.

Just me watching films eh?

The Wrong Missy

David Spade has a terrible blind date with a nutcase 20 years younger than him but then months later meets the woman of his dreams who just happens to have the same name. He accidentally invites the nutcase to Hawaii on a work trip where she proceeds to rape him twice and get up to all sorts of other funny hijinks.

It’s from Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison studios so as expected features all his family and mates. Some of the humour hits but most of it really doesn’t and at one point David Spade almost has a threesome with Sarah Chalke and his date and it’s at this point we both decided it was unrealistic shite.

Better than the George Clooney film but only just. It casts David Spade as a romantic lead though so I think the George Clooney one maybe wins in that department.

Had it been made more recently, people would’ve gone crazy for it pretending they used to read the comics and demanding every character have their own spin-off.

It’s not a great film by any stretch, but I wouldn’t say it’s entirely awful either. Theres a bit of daft fun to be had. It’s certainly better than The Phantom that came a couple of years after it

Thelma (cinema)

Lovely comedy featuring actual 93 year old June Squibb as a 93 year old who goes on a hunt for the scammer who nicked 10 grand off her. Very funny, a really pleasant watch, and some nice turns from Squibb, Fred Hechinger, Parker Posey and Richard Roundtree!

Sleep (2023) (cinema)

Korean black comedy horror about a bloke's sleepwalking getting out of control. Turns beautifully in its second half, becomes really bizarre and has a couple of extremely funny moments. Superb.

Point Blank (2010)

The French actioner that was remade (craply) a couple of years ago by Netflix. Can't beat this if you're looking for an 80 minute action thriller that almost never stops.

Le Cercle Rouge / Le Samourai

Jean-Pierre Melville's crime classics, two of the most influential crime movies ever made. In the case of the latter, maybe one of the most influential in any genre. If you like the genre, you cannot go without seeing these.

Vabank / Vabank 2 (ok.ru)

A pair of Polish crime comedies from the 80s. Didn't know much about these beforehand but they're very good indeed, both as crime films and as comedies. Two of the most accessible and fun films Poland has ever made.

Hold-Up (1985)

French-Canadian crime comedy that was remade a few years later as Quick Change with Bill Murray. This is slightly better though, with a very funny Jean-Paul Belmondo turn (that guy was so great, lads) and a dubbed Kim Cattrall along for the ride, too. Very enjoyable.

Gosh haven't seen the phantom in a long time it's up on paramount plus if I recall might give it a re-watch over the next few days.

Crazy, Stupid, Love

A Love Actually-style multi-relationship romantic comedy. One is Steve Carrell and Julianne Moore who are divorcing because she fucked Kevin Bacon behind his back. The other is Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone who play a slimy pick-up artist and potentially soon-to-be-engaged lawyer, and the third is Steve Carrell's 13 year old son and 17 year old babysitter he has a crush on but she has a crush on Steve Carrell.

It's pretty funny for the most part thanks to the cast, but it drags on a little and feels like all the individual issues will never resolve (they do pretty well thankfully). As expected all the main stars pull their weight and it carries the film nicely even in the slumps.
There's a few mis-steps. The main ones being that we're supposed to sympathise with the main two characters but it's hard to because one of them with very little provocation fucks Kevin Bacon and ends their marriage in public over it, then continues dating Kevin Bacon. Then the other fucks 9 women in the space of like a week as retaliation and then we're supposed to root for them potentially getting back together. The other huge mis-step is when the 17 year old babysitter gives the 13 year old an envelope full of nude photos which I think counts as both paedophilia and child porn but it's played off as cute.

The best part of the film is the Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone pairing. They have great chemistry and we both agreed the film would have been way better focusing more on them than the Steve Carrell pairing.

Of the three films we watched the last few days, this was easily the best one. Our next pick is Day Shift which was sold to us with a cowboy Snoop Dogg in the trailer.

I thought this was surprisingly good, when I saw it, Jamie Foxx is usually the guarantee of a bunch of shit.
