"Fantastic" Tommy Rogers passes away

Monday, 01 June 2015 12:09

By Dave Meltzer

Thomas Couch, best known as Tommy Rogers from the 80s and 80s tag team of The Fantastics, passed away this morning in Honolulu, where he has been living since 2006.

Couch, who just turned 54, had been having legal troubles in recent years stemming from fighting.  He was to be sentenced tomorrow over a fight with police officers and feared a long prison stay.

At this moment, the cause of circumstances of his death are pending.  There was no note left, and according to one of his best friends, he had been in good spirits in recent days.  He was found at about 3 a.m. by his roommate in a chair in front of a computer, gurgling.  The roommate called 911, but he was unable to be revived.

Tommy Rogers always finished high in lists of the most underrated pro wrestler of the 80s and 90s.  He was small, but was as solid a worker as there was in wrestling, with a great physique.  He and tag team partner Bobby Fulton were best known for their matches with The Midnight Express and The Sheepherders that were among the best matches of the late 80s.

The team held the UWF and World Class world tag team titles as well as the NWA U.S. tag team titles.

Sad news about Tommy Rogers and a real shame it seemed to have gone a bit unnoticed. As Meltzer's brief obituary says, he was one of the most underrated wrestlers of his time. I am a big fan of the Fantastics vs Midnight Express feud from 1988 NWA. My favourite Fantastics match though is the match they had with Joe Malenko and Tsuyoshi Kikuchi in AJPW back in 1990. Poor Kikuchi took a proper kicking in that match.

Apparently Tyson Kidd suffered a spinal cord injury in a dark match with Samoa Joe before Raw on Monday. Not a great start for Joe.

Not a great start for Joe? That's what you get from that story?

I think he’s deducing that management won’t be looking too fondly on Joe if he’s injured Tyson Kidd in his first main roster match.

Story said surgery wasn't needed, and I find Kidd bland as fuck. More worried about Joe getting blamed for it and messing up his push.

That's cool if surgery wasn't needed, a spinal cord injury sounds as bad as it gets.

You're more worried about someone's push than someone's spine being injured? Regardless of whether you like Kidd or not, that's a bit of a weird way of looking at things
