Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted January 6, 2011 Paid Members Posted January 6, 2011 Throw Last Man Standing in the pot there. I saw it in the flicks on me 17th birthday and went straight out the next day to Tower Records to buy Ry Cooder's score. Actually you beautiful UKFF bastards, you've put the goo on me and I'm going to watch that tonight...
Guest Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 The Debt Collector  stars Billy Connolly and Ken Stott. great wee suspensefull film about a cop who cant accept that a criminals changed his ways and making a living
Paid Members bAzTNM#1 Posted January 6, 2011 Author Paid Members Posted January 6, 2011 The Debt Collector Great film. Another few lesser-known, but good, Scottish films include  Comfort and Joy - "It stars Bill Paterson as a Glasgow radio DJ whose life undergoes a bizarre upheaval when his girlfriend leaves him."  Strictly Sinatra - "The film is about a young Glaswegian-Italian lounge singer, Toni Cocozza (Ian Hart), with a passion for Frank Sinatra and the dream of becoming a hugely famous musician. He grows weary of playing to elderly crowds in third rate bars and decides to accept career help from mob boss Chisolm (Brian Cox)". Tons of the Gallowgate Celtic pubs appear in this film.  "Small Faces" and "Ratcatcher" are also worth checking out. "Dear Frankie" too.

Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted January 6, 2011 Paid Members Posted January 6, 2011 Good shouts with Bringing Out the Dead, Cop Land and Ghostdog: Way of the Samurai Pat! Some cracking and overlooked films there. Have many on here seen Dressed to Kill? That's very underrated, as is much of De Palma's work (particularly the aforementioned Blow Out). Â Big De Palma fanboy here. I know he's often dismissed as nothing more than a Hitchcock imitator but I've always thought he's a lot more than that. Dressed To Kill is great but The Fury, Femme Fatale and Snake Eyes are all underrated, and Casualties Of War is a really underrated Vietnam film.
Paid Members Lefty Posted January 6, 2011 Paid Members Posted January 6, 2011 The Magician (2005) Â Absolutely blinding micro-budget film. It's shot in documentary style and is the day to day story of a hitman (played by Scott Ryan who also directs the film) in the Melbourne underworld. Â Â Can't stress enough how much this film needs to be seen. Should prove to be an inspiration to any wannabe film makers out there.
Loligan Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Copland - Always give Copland a mention in these. It's got the greatest cast ever and is just awesome. Â Go - a brilliant film about, well drugs and partying but it's made in a "pulp fiction" disjointed style and it works very well. Â Four Rooms - Tim Roth owns this amazing collection of weird torrid tales. Also starring Bruce Willis and Madonna. Â Narc - Ray Liotta played a blinder in this. I watched it twice back to back.

Which reminds me, The Phantom of the Paradise is an under-sung camp classic. The plot doesn't stand up to any kind of scrutiny, some vague Faustian deal and that's it really, but it's a bucket load of fun. Apparently it's massive in one city in Canada, and it bombed everywhere else. I'm with the Canucks.

I'm a big De Palma fan myself and I've just recently been revisiting a lot of his material and watched Snake Eyes and Sisters for the first time. I think the Hitchcock comparison is obviously warranted but people can be unfair as well, De Palma has his own style (that admittedely borrows from Argento, Hitchcock etc) that makes his movies unique. Body Double is great fun as well as an incredibly over the top 80s Rear Window/Vertigo hybrid. Haven't seen The Fury but I have been tempted to buy it, might have to look into it.
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted January 6, 2011 Paid Members Posted January 6, 2011 ^ What I would say about The Fury is that it does drag in some places quite unnecessarily but when it gets going it really is very good, and there are two or three amazing set-piece scenes that are right up there with anything De Palma has done  Narc is great too. I'm surprised Jason Patric hasn't done more since it because he's tremendous in it.  Here's some more I thought of:-  * Into The Night - great little eighties comedy thriller. Jeff Goldblum is always great and Michelle Pfeiffer is fantastic and fantastic looking in it.  * Transsiberian - I'm quite happy to keep going on about this film until EVERYONE has seen it. It's just excellent.  * The Bedroom Window - another quality eighties thriller that has been largely forgotten and probably most remarkable for having Steve Guttenburg in a dramatic role and being better than he was in almost all his comedy roles.
The King Of Swing Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Mean Guns though certainly not as good as it could have been was still a decent time killer.
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted January 6, 2011 Paid Members Posted January 6, 2011 A couple more good ones while I break from work:- Â * Fall Time - really nice little crime thriller, you'll do well to find it these days though. Sheryl Lee's arse probably wins the day, but it has many other things going for it. Â * Downtime - completely panned by the critics and, yes, it is pretty stupid but it's really good fun too. Susan Lynch is a really underrated actress. Â * New Town Killers - surprised this got so many bad reviews, it really is a cracking little gimmicky thriller, and Dougray Scott once again shows he's far better as a villian.
Paid Members Quentin Posted January 6, 2011 Paid Members Posted January 6, 2011 I caught a film called Screwed at about 5am on Sky one night and had to own the DVD the next day. There nae porn in it! Â It stars one of my favourite stand-ups, Norm McDonald and Dave Chappelle. McDonald is a downtrodden butler to a miserable old woman. He attempts to kidnap her dog for ransom but botches it leading to a hilarious sequence of massive fuck-ups. Danny DeVito's performance is also on form.
Paid Members Rob Lowe Posted January 6, 2011 Paid Members Posted January 6, 2011 It stars one of my favourite stand-ups, Norm McDonald and Dave Chappelle. Â I love them both! I'll check that out. Dirty Work is worth a watch too.
Amazing_Red_Fan Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Just like to add To Live and Die in LA. It's showing on MGM HD this week I think, if anyone has it.
