Dai Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 The Fighter - Excellent. Bale is outstanding in it. Easy to see why he won an Oscar for this performance. Hes backed up by good performances from everyone else, too. Far better than Warrior, I think. Lawless - Good, but not great. Hardy and LaBeouf are both great, but all the other characters seem to have been neglected. The two women were pointless, and the main bad guy should have had more screen time. Argo - Great. Builds up to a great climax, and the 2 hours flew by. Affleck isnt particularly great as the main actor, but solid enough.
Vice Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God Haunting, powerful and shocking documentary from the director of Taxi to the Dark Side, about rampant, deep-rooted and long-present Catholic child abuse. It's very moving as well, as it centres on a group of deaf men detailing their victimisation and going public, and seeking justice. Just watch it. It's unreal.
Kawaii Guy Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 If anyone is into soul crushingly bleak films, there is a Pascal Laugier double bill at the Stockport Plaza tonight. His new movie Tall Man, partially based on the slender man legend starring Jessica Biel as a mother who's child goes missing, leading to her investigating it with possible dire consequences, followed by the feel good classic Martyrs, where two girls attempt to avenge abuse suffered as children, only to become involved in something much much worse. Its taken me over a year to get to the point where I can sit and watch Martyrs again, that is the first film in a long time that was a little too much for me, so i might have to call Samaritans before tonight is over.
Keith Houchen Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Martyrs is a steaming turd. Even the Director says so.
Dirty Eddie Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Martyrs is a steaming turd. Even the Director says so. I'd be interested in the source for that if you have it, I researched into that film for my uni dissertation
cobystag Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 On the subject of Anime I imported Hellsing Ultimate 1-8 on blu-ray recently (which wasn't cheap) and it's bloody brilliant and it's a crying shame that we will probably never see a UK release of it on blu-ray heck only the first four volumes even made it to DVD over here. Now if only volumes 9 and 10 were localized but 10 (the final volume) was only released at the end of last year so it's probably going to be a while. I wasn't that keen on Hellsing X's ending, but enjoyed all the OVA's as a series.

I'd be interested in the source for that if you have it, I researched into that film for my uni dissertation A conversation with the Director. He had two separate projects that he took to the producers, one a psychological torment story, the other a torture porn type thing. The producers said they would only front up the cash if he combined the two, hence the clear "Two halves" of the film. He said he went along with it as he had no clout and knew the bodge job would at the least get him recognition. However, he declared Martyrs was, and I quote, "Shit".
Moderators Astro Hollywood Posted February 7, 2013 Moderators Posted February 7, 2013 At one point, and for a long time, he was signed on for the Hellraiser remake. Here's his Pinhead design.

I didn't look much at the film itself, more the reactions from some portions of the media.
Paid Members SpursRiot2012 Posted February 7, 2013 Paid Members Posted February 7, 2013 I saw Django last night. Late, I know, but yeah it was really good. Any interview of Jamie Foxx I've ever seen he comes across like a proper twat but he's a good actor. I'm off to see Die Hard on the 15th. I am looking forward to it but I can't remember if 4.0 was actually any good.

Dai Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Flight - Very good film. From what I read of it beforehand, I thought it could have been overly cliched. Whilst cliched to some degree, it is still original enough to be gripping throughout, and doesnt have a clear sense of "right or wrong" for the main character. Denzel is top class, as are all the other main characters (especially Don Cheadle). There's a few scenes which are a waste of time (a lot of the hospital scene in particular), and should have been chopped (cutting it to 2 hours instead of 2.20 would have been a decent idea).
Paid Members John Matrix Posted February 11, 2013 Paid Members Posted February 11, 2013 So, such is my commitment to watching Bullet to the Head, that I made a 3 and a quarter hour round trip to watch an hour and a half long film, and missed the first 5 minutes. It was worth it. Very different in tone to The Last Stand, it is for the most part far darker and when it is, it works. They try and lighten the mood now and again with the odd one liner but for the most part, they fall pretty flat and it
Paid Members niff Posted February 11, 2013 Paid Members Posted February 11, 2013 (edited) Wreck it Ralph and I loved it. One for the young at heart who remember Pacman and Street Fighter but with a simple sugar coated plot for the under 10s as well. In a world of rehashed 80s films and sequels going into double digits its nice to see a film like this with such a fantastic original idea. Loved the Hell No anger management type support group scene. Starts off really well but goes a little flat from then on sadly, but otherwise worth a watch. Edited February 11, 2013 by niff
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted February 11, 2013 Moderators Posted February 11, 2013 equally so, the main bad guy. Never seen him in anything before, knew he was the new Conan, but expected a typical stiff. The guy had a great look and was pretty charismatic to support it too making for a very convincing and entertaining face off. Nice to know he turns in a good performance. His role in Game of Thrones was brilliant - I really wanted Conan to be any good but it was just turd (except for the first 20 minutes, but he wasn't in that). So, I think it goes without saying that I want to see this film - is it worth going out of my way to make it to the cinema for or will I be fine just watching it at home?
