A late comer but Indiana Jones and the Great Circle for me. Just absolutely nails what you want from an Indiana Jones game. Just sheer joy.

LAD - Infinite Wealth my number 2. I think Ichiban Kasuga might just be my favourite video game character of all time tbh. He is such a likeable idiot.

Finally got a Switch this year so my Game of any year would be Super Mario Kart 8. Just wonderful. Has that Nintendo magic all over it.

It’s mad to think the original game is more than a decade old now. I’d put money on MK9 being a Switch 2 launch game, or at the very least a launch window game.

It's fascinating what Nintendo will launch the Switch 2 with next year. We could get a new Mario game like Odyssey, a new Mario Kart, a new F Zero who knows.

They haven't even shown the bloody thing yet as well.

Sony and Microsoft love showing you things 5 years away, so I do quite like the slightly frustrating but it makes for massive surprises way Nintendo go about things.

It's Balatro. Just addictive, numbers go up fun. There's enough variety in each run to make it something I keep going back to. It's managed to knock Slay the Spire off my 'go to' game for killing a little bit of time.

Add me to the Thank Goodness You're Here crowd. Such a fun game. Short, but it doesn't out stay its welcome.

As far as the best game I've played this year from another year it'd be a toss up between Brotato and Arcade Paradise. The gameplay loop on Arcade Paradise is pretty chill, but the majority of the actual arcade games you can play are really good as well. GTA reimagined as Pacman? Got it. Match 3 shenanigans? Covered. Solitaire ? Minesweeper ? Scaler racing type thing? Dance Dance Revolution ? Loads of things to cater to most tastes. Couple of actual indie games on there in "coin op" form as well.

Still want to get to Stellar Blade

Made the mistake of picking that up despite not digging the demo and sacked it off within a few hours.

Really, really fucking boring. Basically a soulless Nier Automata.

Stellar Blade might be an incredible game for all I know, but I may never get around to playing it because the weird fanbase when it launched put me right off. Okay, we get it, you want all lead characters to have big tits and little clothing. Settle the fuck down.

Didn't play many new games this past year. Echoes of Wisdom (Switch) was good but wins almost by default, ahead of Mind Over Magnet (Steam) and The Legend of Santa (Switch eShop). The demo of Princess Peach: Showtime back in February seemed fine as well. Among games I've seen others play bits of, the aforementioned FF7: Rebirth and Astrobot (both PS5) plus Thank Goodness You're Here (Steam, etc.) look like the best ones. A lot of other popular games felt like flavour of the month that I just couldn't get into.

I can still make two top 10s however, of older games as the opening post instructed, but I've split them into I hadn't played yet but tried for the first time in 2024, and those I've sampled or even finished before but most enjoyed going back to.

Games I had no prior experience of played the year just gone:

1. The Artful Escape (played on Switch)

2. Yoshi's Woolly World (Wii U)

3. Oracle of Ages (GBC but played via NSO)

4. Disco Elysium (played on PS4)

5. Ori and the Will of the Wisps (played on Switch)

6. Alone in the Dark (GBC but played via NSO)

7. Donkey Kong Land 2 (Game Boy but played via NSO)

8. Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising (all modern consoles but played on Switch)

9. XIII (originally GameCube/PS2/Xbox but played on Switch)

10. Ninja Golf (Atari 7800)

Games I'd already played and went back to last year:

1. Darkside Detective (played on Switch, probably on lots of systems)

2. Daytona USA (originally Arcade, played on Xbox 360)

3. TMNT: Shredder's Revenge (all modern consoles, played on Switch)

4. Vampire Survivors (Steam but also on consoles now too)

5. Tetris 99 (NSO)

6. Puzzle Bobble Universe (3DS)

7. Inside (played on Switch, probably on lots of systems)

8. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch)

9. Streets of Rage (Mega Drive)

10. Super Star Wars (originally SNES, played on PS4).
