A sad watch, about a sad man, in a sad business. A cautionary tale that even the biggest, most successful wrestlers still end up broken down, shuffling about with a roid gut, talking endless shit, repeating the same lies they’ve said so many times they don’t even know what’s true anymore, still, “turning on,” the character whenever someone asks for a selfie or their knobhead son sticks a camera in their face to earn a few extra quid.

Hogan was never my guy, so I never had a huge emotional investment in him exposing himself as a racist or tarnishing his legacy, but between this and the Vince documentary it’s all just so fucking bleak.

Imagine watching Night 1 of this year’s Wrestlemania, then binging this after seeing all the adverts, then maybe even a few episodes of the Vince documentary as a chaser. It’d be enough for you to borrow Hulk’s gun to pop in your mouth. Nexties on that shooter, Hulk. Bit of shoot, shoot, pass. You presume these are produced alongside WWE. Is this their attempt at counter-programming Dark Side of the Ring? Grim.

I know it was a big part of Hulk’s career, so they had to cover it, but do you know what I’m sick to fucking death of? Hearing about the Monday Night Wars. Seeing the same clips. I swear I’ve seen at least fifty documentaries using these exact same clips, telling this exact same story. The year will be 2050. WWE documentaries will still be focussing almost exclusively on 1994 to 2004. After that someone will quietly mumble, “and then some other stuff happened…” It’s like a metaphor for wrestlers from that time period, still banging on about shit from thirty years ago. Fucking move on! Get over it! Cover the other decades of history.

Some other quick thoughts:

- Funny that they didn’t explain how the Finger Poke of Doom at least half worked within the storyline, with the characters of Nash and Hogan revealing that they were working together. If you didn’t know the story, you’d think the men themselves just couldn’t be arsed working a match that night.

- Also funny that all these years later and Triple H is still arguing putting the belt on Hulk in 2002 was the wrong move, and it was definitely just a nostalgia pop. Cry me a river, Paul! You thought you were the King of Politics and then the Hulkster taught you there were levels to this. Shove your, “Beautiful Day,” montage up your arse!

- Every time I see the Hulk Hogan heel turn, it’ll now always remind me of what a colossal bollock-drop John Cena’s heel turn was. Felt similarly seismic in the moment. Abandoned and quietly forgotten about a few months later.

- Cody Rhodes was the only person who came across well in the whole documentary.  A reminder of how great he is as the public face of WWE. He sounded earnest talking about his love for Rock vs. Hogan. It’s surprising they’ve never dug deeper into that. You could make a great little montage of these, “passing of the torch,” Wrestlemania moments, going from generation to generation.
