Paid Members DEF Posted July 13, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted July 13, 2019 Vote Empire Online The gist is Empire are doing a top 30 favourite movies of the last 30 years. So why is that interesting when we have our own beloved UKFF Top 50? Well the kicker is you have to vote for one film per year. It's pretty tough and I had to do all sorts of mental gymnastics to bump flicks off. My list... 1989 The Burbs 1990 Total Recall 1991 Terminator 2: Judgement Day 1992 Aladdin 1993 Hard Target 1994 Pulp Fiction 1995 Mallrats 1996 Scream 1997 Con Air 1998 The Truman Show 1999 Dogma 2000 Versus 2001 The Fast And The Furious 2002 Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers 2003 Kill Bill Volume 1 2004 Shaun Of The Dead 2005 Sin City 2006 Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead 2007 Hot Fuzz 2008 The Dark Knight 2009 Watchmen 2010 Piranha 3D 2011 Fast & Furious 5 2012 Avengers Assemble 2013 Pacific Rim 2014 Captain America: The Winter Soldier 2015 Straight Outta Compton 2016 Captain America: Civil War 2017 Wonder Woman 2018 Avengers: Infinity War 2019 Avengers: Endgame
Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted July 13, 2019 Awards Moderator Share Posted July 13, 2019 I've been having a ponder about this over the past couple of days. It's an interesting spin on what I'd normally do for a top films list, having to only pick one per year. What I've figured out so far are there are certain years where there are loads I'd pick (1999 and 2008) and others where I'm really struggling. Luckily the last few years I've posted my top films for each year on here so once I've trawled through the Films You've Watched thread and figured it out, I'll stick my list below for anyone who cares. Awards Moderator Onyx2 Posted July 13, 2019 Awards Moderator Share Posted July 13, 2019 Love this idea and want to do my own list. Fairly sure it will take me about 8 years. Defiantly not reading your list DEF until I've finished my own, trying not to be swayed.
Paid Members DEF Posted July 13, 2019 Author Paid Members Share Posted July 13, 2019 I'm useless with dates. Googling 'complete list films (insert year here) imdb' links that years films in order of popularity, should anyone struggle. I've found that pretty useful to get a good overview of each year. Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted July 13, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted July 13, 2019 (edited) Well this will be horrible despite the interesting 30 films / 30 years caveat because of it being Empire and all. The last 10 years will be especially appalling once the Marvel nerds have got their hands on it. Here's what I'd go for anyway. 89 - Kiki's Delivery Service 90 - Miller's Crossing 91 - Terminator 2: Judgement Day 92 - Hard Boiled 93 - Three Colours: Blue 94 - Ed Wood 95 - Se7en 96 - Hard Eight 97 - Con Air 98 - The Big Lebowski 99 - Eyes Wide Shut 00 - Sexy Beast 01 - The Devil's Backbone 02 - 24 Hour Party People 03 - Lost in Translation 04 - Mysterious Skin 05 - Hidden (Cache) 06 - Bug 07 - No Country for Old Men 08 - The Hurt Locker 09 - Inglourious Basterds 10 - Confessions 11 - Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol 12 - The Imposter 13 - Under the Skin 14 - Faults 15 - Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation 16 - The Nice Guys 17 - Blade Runner 2049 18 - Mission: Impossible - Fallout 2015 and 2018 were absolute sods because I had to leave out Fury Road and Sicario, and then Into the Spider-Verse and Blindspotting. Also, I don't think you're supposed to nominate 2019 as it's still in progress but I would go with John Wick: Chapter 3. RedRooster
The one thing I’ve learned from this list is that I really need to watch more films from 1997. 89 - Back to the Future of 2 90 - Goodfellas 91 - The Silence of the Lambs 92 - Aladdin 93 - Groundhog Day 94 - The Lion King 95 - Toy Story 96 - Trainspotting 97 - Event Horizon 98 - The Truman Show 99 - The Matrix 00 - Memento 01 - Donnie Darko 02 - Spider-Man 03 - Kill Bill vol 1 04 - Million Dollar Baby 05 - Capote 06 - Casino Royale 07 - Son of Rambow 08 - The Dark Knight 09 - District 9 10 - Kick-Ass 11 - Rise of the Planet of the Apes 12 - Skyfall 13 - American Hustle 14 - Guardians of the Galaxy 15 - Mad Max: Fury Road 16 - Room 17 - Blade Runner 2049 (although on hindsight I should have voted for Thor Ragnarok, I completely forgot about that) 18 - Blackkklansman 19 - CanYou Ever Forgive Me? I probably forgot a few movies along the way, I was going by lists of films released each year as for the most part I just couldn’t remember what came out when. Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted July 13, 2019 Awards Moderator Share Posted July 13, 2019 (edited) Right! Figured mine out, finally. 2008 was definitely one of the toughest years, so much came out that year I loved. Other years with lots of contenders for me were 1999, 2014 and 2015, whereas I struggled for 1994, 1998 and 2011. Anyway, I've probably got my US and UK release dates confused in some cases, and I know for sure that I haven't tried to pick the 'best' films, but I've tried to go with the ones that provoked the strongest personal memories for me. (Apart from my 2019 choice, which isn't even out yet, but I'm going to assume I'll love.) 1989 – Ghostbusters II 1990 - Misery 1991 – Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey 1992 - Aladdin 1993 – Jurassic Park 1994 – The Mask 1995 - Jumanji 1996 – Toy Story 1997 – LA Confidential 1998 – Small Soldiers 1999 – Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 2000 – Almost Famous 2001 – Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 2002 – Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers 2003 – Finding Nemo 2004 – Shaun Of The Dead 2005 - Serenity 2006 – The Prestige 2007 – Blades of Glory 2008 – The Dark Knight 2009 - Watchmen 2010 – Scott Pilgrim vs. The World 2011 – Arthur Christmas 2012 – Avengers Assemble 2013 – Les Miserables 2014 - Boyhood 2015 – Mad Max: Fury Road 2016 – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story 2017 – Blade Runner 2049 2018 – Avengers: Infinity War 2019 – Blinded By The Light Edited July 13, 2019 by HarmonicGenerator

Heck yes, Marvel is the best thing to happen to film since Arnold Schwarzenegger. EDIT - hmm maybe Jason Statham is. I'll probably flip flop on that all night. Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted July 13, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted July 13, 2019 Only two superhero films got in the UKFF top 50 films list in 2012. This is why we must never do a follow-up.
