Watched the Hunt/Stipe fight this morning and it got a little sad towards the end. Credit to Stipe, though, he's somehow morphed into one of the best heavyweights in the World.

Wonder what Hunt does now? He's probably never getting another crack at the Heavyweight title, seeing as he's ancient. Wee shame.

Having moved flat and not had access to the internet or TV over the weekend I didn't see the Hunt fight, and after reading the reports I don't think I'll bother.

I see that some Australian politician is up in arms about the beating Hunt took.

yeh im torn on it as well, i really hope it turns out to be a classic fight fight though. A few years ago this thing would have really been seen as a superfight type deal, it doesn't really have that feel anymore but i could definitely deliver.

There's definitely been a lack of really good fights in the UFC recently, the cards are solid on paper but real fight of the year candidates are few and far between, anyone else noticed this? There's been 14 shows this year so far and only 7 Fight of the Night awards have been handed out, that kind of tells the story.

I'm not torn at all on this fight. I like Faber but I'm a Frankie Edgar guy all the way.

There's definitely been a lack of really great fights recently. 2014 was similar but this year it's been even more evident IMO. 2013 was the last year that was absolutely jam-packed with fantastic fights, all year round.

I've got a feeling things are about to pick up on that front though. Fights like Edgar vs Faber, Melendez vs Alvarez and Condit vs Alves...I can't really see a way they don't deliver.

If one man could ruin his credibility with one sentence, this is it.

Seriously, Edgar should win this. He is a nightmare match-up for Faber. It could be argued that Edgar is simply a better version of Faber. I see Edgar winning wide on points. Sadly.

Bitter B.J Penn fan.

Edgar's the shit. Fuck off. And I'm a massive BJ Penn fan, more a Penn fan than an Edgar fan. But to me Edgar is awesome to watch. He's actually quite underappreciated IMO.

Some of the best boxing in MMA, unbelievable heart and he's the type of wrestler I like - always attacking and working to finish. He's not just going to take you down and hang onto you winding down the clock. He's always looking to advance position or finish. He doesn't very often get the finish but the effort is always there.

He was also involved in two of the best lightweight fights in MMA history against Gray Maynard. Plus the absolute classic against Tyson Griffin in his UFC debut.

Frankie Edgar is quality. I'm all for fighters with larger than life personalities but they're not all going to be like that and I wouldn't want them to be. If the UFC had 50 Conor McGregor types then Conor McGregor wouldn't stand out so much or be as fun to follow. He'd just blend in. I get Edgar isn't the life and soul of the party, but with his track record for having tremendous fights he gets a pass on that from me.

Comparing Edgar to McGregor is a tad extreme. McGregor would stand out against most fighters, even ones that were "larger than life".

I don't question Edgar's ability. He is a sure-fire Hall Of Famer, and one of the best lighter weight fighters of his era. His fights with Maynard were classics, and his 2nd fight with Bendo was one of the biggest rip-off I have seen. As a fighter, he has a lot of character, and is far from vanilla.

I would argue that GSP, Fedor and Hendo are not really "larger than life". However, they had their own little distinctions that set them apart from others, and give them their own individual charm. With Edgar, there is just nothing. He is not unpleasant or an idiot, just a tad vacant.

It's the same with other fighters though. Eddie Alvarez and Melvin Manhoef are two of my favourite fighters in all of MMA. No real personality, their interviews are nothing special, but they're just really exciting to watch fight. For some guys that's enough, I reckon.

I think the 'Edgar is dull' stuff started after he beat BJ Penn for the title. I don't ever recall hearing he was dull or vanilla before that. I think that's down to a) him having to follow BJ Penn's reign, which was a short reign that seemed to end just as Penn was hitting his peak. And b) people expect more from champions. They want a proper star, which is fair enough. Edgar isn't some superstar and he never will be. He just lacks the ingredient of real charisma that all big combat sports stars have. But it's not like he's a Neil Magny, Myles Jury or Ryan Bader either. Someone you wouldn't even notice was gone if they just disappeared one day. When you see Frankie Edgar's name on a card you don't feel total indifference surely? You mightn't be giddy but Edgar's name on a card makes a difference.

Demetrious Johnson is a similar but more extreme case of this. I don't remember anyone calling him boring or dull until he became the champ. He's a tremendous fighter but as 'the man' in the division, he's just not that interesting. I think to a lesser extent that's what it is with Edgar too. I get that to a point but it's not like he's shit to watch or anything. And fortunately he's in a division that's, IMO, one of the most interesting in MMA right now, so it's not as big a deal that he's not Johnny Charisma. Personally I love the contrast and mixture of guys at 145 at the moment. Aldo, McGregor, Edgar, Mendes, Faber, Bermudez, even Holloway. They all bring their own certain something to the mix that's entertaining in one way or another.

Seriously, for me, I think featherweight is my favourite division these days. It's rapidly catching up lightweight and welterweight as one of the most stacked weight classes in the sport. You can mix and match pretty much any of the top ten at 145 and you're pretty much guaranteed a barnburner.

Indeed, different tastes.

However, Manhoef gets away with it for me, as he just looks like a killer. His appearance alone allows him to carry himself like a bad ass.  I recall being surprised when I read he was only 5ft 9. Cain is the same. It's the way they carry themselves, rather than any form of showmanship or interview skills.

I can agree there.

If Edgar's name crops up in a card, he adds to it. He is not the sort of fighter who turns you off from watching.

Manhoef was a bad example actually, I realised after I hit 'post' but couldn't be bothered to edit. What Manhoef lacked in gift of gab he more than made up for in fighting style and appearance. Manhoef might just have had the best look ever in MMA. Terrifying. Always loved his entrance as well, like a caged animal let loose.

Staredown from the weigh in...

Now I haven't actually watched the weigh in yet. Is Edgar in shoes and Faber barefoot? If not then that's more of a size difference than I imagined. Considering Faber was a top featherweight a few years ago and there's been talk that Edgar could easily fight at bantamweight. Not like Struve vs Barry or anything obviously, but I thought they'd be about the same size.
