The "Do you still listen to the radio?" thread

Well after years of probably foolishly thinking radio is dead and buried, even with the occasional listen to Bob Harris, I happened upon Dermot O'Learys show on Saturday while changing cds in my car, and Ryan Bingham was on it, here it is...

Dermot O'Leary 25/6/11

and with Vetiver (one of my favorite bands) on this Saturday I was just wondering if you guys still listen to the radio and if so is it for music or is it talksport or what? Recommend us what you are listening to!

So discuss...

I still listen to the radio plenty at work, but I wouldnt recommend anything because I only listen to RockFM, so you'd take the piss.

My employees accuse me of only listening to "Dad Rock." I say bollocks, my dad NEVER listened to Journey.

I have the radio on in the day, or rather an internet stream of The Bear (an Ottawa station). Good music and I get hockey news which I don't get over here.

Other than that I tend to download the rock and punk shows from iplayer but that's about it for UK radio. Sometimes a bit of Bob Harris but unfortunately no more Mark Lamarr.

On the commute to work I listen to the Shaun Keavney Breakfast Show and Steve Lamacq in the afternoon which are both on 6Music. Both play great music, have interesting features, news bulletins every 30 minutes and keep me happily entertained on my 90 minute drives. When the football season is on I listen to a bit of the Alan Brazil Breakfast and Adrian Durham in the afternoons on Talksport. Unfortunately I don't have that much oppurtunity to listen to the excellent Hawksbee and Jacobs between 1pm and 4pm.

If I am pottering about on the night I listen to Bob Fischer on BBC Tees which for local radio is a brilliant listen. It has a good mixture of old and new music and has smatterings of unintentional comedy.

In terms of broadcast radio I actively seek out Danny Baker's shows and Test Match Special. If I am not in the gym/pub I usually listen to Radio 4 between 630 and 7 while cooking my dinner, decent comedy and panel shows at that time, just be ready to retune when The Archers kick in. In the mornings I have to listen to CDs in the car for fear that I accidentally stumble across Nick Ferrari while scanning through the stations, I don't want to start my day with a vagina monologue directed at this odious ****.

I always intend to check out Gilles Peterson and Benji B on the iPlayer but rarely get around to it, most of my specialist music output comes via internet streaming radio.

Usually Father Teds show on Rock Radio or Nicky Horne on Planet Rock. 6 Music is also really good and diverse, the Craig Charles Funk and Soul show especially.

Iain Lee's show on Absolute Radio is excellent.

I think it is fucking terrible and the worst thing on Absolute.

Most of the stuff I listen to has already been mentioned. I'm another TMS boy and will always aim to listen to it when it's on. Listen to Talksport on a daily basis although Darren Gough has me wishing for the return of Ian Wright, as I find the guy completely clueless on any subject not Cricket. I was not a fan of Matterface as their commentator, but he is far better in that role than host of Kick Off which is poor (guess they are making him earn his money in the close season). H & J are always superb and I enjoy Danny Kelly. Depending on subject matter I either enjoy or can't abide Durham, although he is clearly their to be controversial and get people ringing in. His double standards regarding Arteta and either Fabio or Rafael (I forget which) really soured me on the guy though.

Absolute 80s and 90s are both great to listen to also.

Nick Abbot on LBC, he is my radio hero! Frank Skinner's Saturday morning show on Absolute is phenomenally funny, Skinner is brilliant. Mark Kermode's film review show alongside Simon Mayo on 5Live is great even though Mayo comes across as being a bit of a cunt. Iain Lee's show on Absolute is very hit and miss, it's the same fucking callers every night, and I get the impression he really doesn't care as he is probably getting the boot soon!
